The Sprite Remoderation Project

With PIXI being a upgrade to Romi's Sprite Tool, it was inevitable for us to prepare a massive remoderation. Many people have problems searching for a a good sprite because the section is filled with submissions without tags, or they have descriptions that don't make sense and lack either images or videos in their descriptions.

This is a really big project. We need to give these submissions a proper description, put tags and put a screenshot (.png/.gif) or a video. Almost all of the sprites need this, but at the same time many sprites have poor quality that don't meet the current standards (there are some that are just simple edits from other sprites).

PIXI is going to be the new standard, so we need to be sure that all sprites are ready to be inserted with it. There are some sprites that use TRASM to be assembled and these sprites should be updated to use asar, so PIXI can come without trashkas. Simple converting sprites with the tool is not reliable, as many sprites do not convert properly or lack features when converted.

Again, this is a really big project, so that's why I'm also using this thread to invite people to help us, the ASM moderators, to remoderate the section. People who help us will receive a helper badge (drawn by Eevee) and if you're really dedicated with helping us, we might even give out a prize!
Any person interested should send me a PM or a DM via Discord, I'm 12344 🐇. Communication during this process will be held on our very own Discord server in its' own specific channel, and we require all those helping in this project to be active in the Discord during this time.

And finally, this will be the current priority of the ASM moderation team, so don't worry if the other sections looks abandoned, they will be moderated at some point!

tl;dr The current plans for this project are this:
- Add tags to submissions without them
- Add images/videos to submissions without them
- Edit the submissions' descriptions if they aren't clear
- Convert TRASM sprites to use asar assembly.
- Remove old submissions if they are just simple edits or are of low quality.
- Hiring people to help ASM mods during this project.
- Moderation in other ASM sections will be heavily reduced during this time.
Well, the good news is that the sprite section isn't as big as the graphics section. I mean that the graphics section have over 2000 submissions, while the sprites were 705.

I would like to help, but need to know more asm. Maybe if someone could teach me some more asm I might be a good asset in this project.



Should the new sprites also use the subroutines that pixi provides? Do they need to be converted to sa-1 hybrids aswell?

Preferably yes, I'd say, since having copies of that code in each sprite will just waste precious space in your ROM, as is already the case right now. Plus using the routines will make it easier to change/improve them later on without having to rewrite every single sprite.

From what I know, no, SA-1 enforcement is (or will be) dropped. Though SA-1 support is still welcome and sprites that fully support SA-1 will get the sa-1 tag to indicate that.

Heh, I knew about that, so I updated sprite by imamelia to PIXI format with sa-1 support. Too bad, I didn't included screenshots for it. Also, I updated
generator -> uberASM, since I heard that it'll be a thing too.


Should be prepared clean and optimize libraries for PIXI before remodaration in my opinion.
for example, ChangeMap16 is still have high byte swapping issue, it's annoying and nonsense...

Yeah, I get your point. RPG Hacker is currently fixing some issues with the tool at the same time he's moderating it. He has addressed some issues with it, including the ChangeMap16 and other shared routines.
I don't know if the swapped high byte on vertical levels got fixed (and the crash related to that due to not pulling the same number of bytes that were pushed), I'll ask about that. Unless you mean something else with that.

Since the sprite got approved, you could submit an update and add the screenshots, just mention in the submission notes that you added the screenshots.
And the generators to uberASM thing sounds interesting, we could do that as well at some point. The focus right now is the sprites section, we might look into other sections later.
In ChangeMap16, I mainly fixed SA-1 compatibility errors. Haven't done anything about the bug you mentioned, nor am I aware of it. If you can provide some details, I can take a look.

PLEASE still include Romi's spritetool sprites in the zip file. My rom doesn't work with PIXI, and the sprites I make have trouble with it.

PIXI will become the new standard, no traces of Romi's Sprite tool will be in the sprites sections. But we can help you if you elaborate your problem with PIXI, explaning why it doesn't work.

Also, the only way that someone's sprites won't work on PIXI is that the sprites are coded with TRASM syntax, which is what we're trying to get rid of too, it's a very outdated assembler with almost none of the features that asar, or even xkas, offers.

Well, we don't have exact standards, but since the resources we use are 90% from here the switch is inevitable. So, TheJullasicFox, you won't win so much by joining FR.
