Staff Spotlight - June 2017

It has been June for a while now, but it's still hard to believe we're already here. Time goes by fast when you're having fun, I guess! For this months Staff Spotlight, we've got Lazy, who isn't as lazy as you might think.

Dan Hey, Lazy! How are you doing today?
Lazy I'm doing fine, thank you

Dan That's good to hear! You're one of the newest hack moderators promoted in January this year, what has it been like for you so far?
Lazy It's been pretty chill. Not many hacks have been submitted since January but I still got to moderate quite a few. For the most part hack moderation is enjoyable. Occasionally there are hacks that are more of a chore to play but w/e. I'm still glad I decided to accept the offer, feels nice to be useful

Dan Glad you're having fun with it! You seem to pick a lot of hacks to moderate with a large exit count and hard difficulties, what makes you choose those over shorter/easier ones?
Lazy They feels more satifying to play, I don't rly enjoy world 1 demos and the like cause they end before they start to pick up. As for the harder difficulties, I just enjoy the challenge. Granted, most Hard hacks aren't very fair, but they're still more entertaining than easier ones. Also, those hacks are a huge undertaking to play so instead of awkwardly waiting for someone else to claim them I like to go ahead and bite the bullet

Dan I'm sure it's much appreciated that you're taking care of those hacks. You helped remoderate a bunch of old hacks back in 2014/2015. Do you think that experience alone has made moderating easy for you?
Lazy It gave me a good idea of what I was getting into. To be honest, a lot of hacks nowadays aren't all that different from those legacy hacks, both in terms of gameplay and visuals. Most hackers aren't very ambitious and just want to make a mario game, so a lot of hack submissions are very average. I don't really mind it tho, it's just the way it is. But yea moderating temp hacks first was helpful, it also helped because I already knew how everything works when I became an actual mod.
Dan You could consider yourself lucky as most of the mods haven't had the opportunity to get in touch with moderation before.

Dan In your previous interview you've described why you've been staying around. Have your thoughts on that changed now that we're one year ahead?
Lazy Not really, I still mostly stay for the contests, and now for the hack moderation of course. I'm not really in touch with the community but smwc's still an enjoyable place to be.

Dan Despite not really being in touch with the community, do you still have some sort of opinion on the community as a whole?
Lazy I'd say it's a friendly community. Sure there's fair share of drama and some people that I can't stand, but that's par for the course. There are a lot of children in the community which gets a little awkward from time to time, but there are plenty of mature and friendly ppl too. It's nice community but I mostly just interact with the JUMP crew.

Dan Speaking of JUMP, what is it that makes JUMP stand out from all other collab hacks?
Lazy Creativity. It's a pretty controversial subject. Aesthetics vs. Creativity have been a huge topic in contests as of late, with JUMP usually representing the creativity side, and imo it's just a matter of taste. Some people enjoy pretty visuals and others prefer fascinating level design ideas. I'm on the creativity side myself, and JUMP is one of the very few hacks that focuses on creativity so it sticks out to me, but yeah. It's very polarizing I don't blame anyone for not liking it, each to their own.
Dan Each to their own indeed, I've seen JUMP get a lot of praise though, so that's a good thing!

Dan You've participated in our latest contest, the Kaizo Level Design Contest, together with lolyoshi. How was that, and have you worked on anything related to Kaizo before?
Lazy It was cool! Toolless Kaizo is a relatively new genre and it feels very fresh to design and play. I'm glad I decided to collab with yossy cause we decided to go for a different style than most other entries, the collab itself was a bit of a mess but in the end it turned out pretty well. It's essentially my first kaizo level too. I have made one or two kaizos in the past but they were in a very different style. If I ever make more kaizo levels, I definitely want them to be in the style of our entry (more skill-based and less memorization)

Dan What else have you been doing in terms of SMW hacking as of late? Is there another hack that you're working on at the moment?
Lazy Well I've been leading a little collab which should hopefully be released on C3. Other than that, I've also been doing stuff for jump1/2, as well as practicing my porting skills.
Lazy Also, this isn't really SMW related, but I've been trying to get into YI hacking too, since there might be a contest sometime this year, but that's taking a backseat for right now.

Dan And now it's time for some random questions!
Dan What are your thoughts on this image
Lazy It's cursed. Cursed image.
Dan What's your favorite animal?
Lazy I'm a cat person
Dan What's your least favorite food?
Lazy mm, first one that comes to mind is eggplants, gonna go with that
Dan 🍆
Lazy 💦
Dan Where do you expect SMWC to be in 5 years from now?
Lazy It'll be exactly the same, that includes smwcp2 not being released
Dan dam
Dan Are you lazy?
Lazy irl, incredibly. Online is actually where I'm the least lazy.
Dan Partially living up to the name, I can live with that!

Dan Well, that's it for this interview. Is there something you'd like to say to the community or your friends before we wrap this up?
Lazy Test your hacks before submitting them 👺
Lazy That's it
Judging by what I've heard from other hack moderators in the past, it ain't an easy job. In other words: props to you, Lazy! You definitely deserve this spotlight. Keep up the good work, man.
Yep definitely well deserved, great job c:
Nice one Lazy. I thought that when I came back you didn't seem to moderate a whole lot, but i've been proven wrong. Good on you.
honestly, not so lazy at all... anyway, congrats!

lazy boy

Congrats Lazy!
Someone else who prefers creativity in hacks \^o^/

Really nice interview Lazy. Congrats^^

I bet I'm the one whose he can't stand!
(just kidding)

That's a great interview.

He touched an interesting subject about creativity and visuals.
I like to see a creative hack, but I'm also all up for different and cool visuals.

Both help a hack stand out in a way or another, like VIP and Wall Mix, it's fun to play, but it would certainly be buried and maybe forgotten without those crazy graphics.

Even if it's something that seems minor and not much, it all counts.
Хуй войне!

桐生会FOREVER #ThankYouCoco / Rest in peace, Near, thank you for everything
Congrats to you Lazy!!!!.
