SMW Advanced (v1.0.3)

Standard

Super Mario World Advanced

This is Super Mario World, but every level features changes from the GBA port of the game, Super Mario Advance 2: Super Mario World.

If you were looking for new levels, worlds or whatever, then there's not really much for you here. #wario{-_-?}

If you were looking for the SMA2 experience, without everything that made the GBA version (arguably) worse than the SNES one, this will probably be more to your liking. #wario{$_$}

And so your journey begins, once again. Can you make your way through Dinosaur Land, and collect all Dragon Coins and moons? And perhaps, even save the Princess??? And maybe race or co-op with your friends while doing so?????
Hopefully you can. #wario{;)}

You can download the latest version here (patch to vanilla SMW using flips).

(also available here is a version with everything unlocked and some other useful stuff)

Here is a list of features, as of v1.0.3:
  • all level changes from SMA2 have been ported, however adaptations related to the GBA's smaller screen size were ignored, because unneeded on the SNES.
  • as a result of the above, you can now collect Dragon Coins in all levels, except switch palaces, Yoshi's House, Top Secret Area and Front/Back Door.
  • there are also more midway points.
  • you will see a coin icon on the overworld map if you've already collected 5 or more Dragon Coins in a level.
  • your Dragon Coin and 3UP moon collection progress now saves over power cycles.
  • lives/powerups/coins/yoshi/etc now save over power cycles as well.
  • collecting all sets of Dragon Coins will restore them in all levels permanently, as Peach Coins.
  • likewise, collecting all 3UP moons will restore them permanently.
  • you will earn a different icon on your file in the title screen, depending on how much you've completed of the game.
  • feeding a blue/yellow/red Yoshi will make them available in regular Yoshi blocks.
  • Luigi (player 2) now uses graphics similar to the SMAS+W version (this). He does NOT have changed physics, since that doesn't belong in 2 player games.
  • the "autumn" palette change now happens only after obtaining all 96 exits, instead of after completing Special World.
  • tested on console :^)
  • some other things i forgot possibly. find out!

Changelog:
  • v1.0.3
    • edited vd4 sublevel which was somehow unedited. woops
  • v1.0.2
    • fixed crushers in Valley Fort when restarting from the midway point
    • added missing message box at the end of Butter Bridge 1 for everyone's joy
  • v1.0.1
    • fixed item memory in Iggy's Castle room 2, which could prevent the 4th Dragon Coin from showing up
  • v1.0.0 (initial release)

Known bugs:
  • sometimes, after starting a new file, you will see Mario riding a yellow-ish Yoshi in the welcome screen. I have no idea how to replicate this, but it doesn't affect gameplay.
  • you can easily item swap the first Dragon Coin in SW4, as you're eating the koopa using baby Yoshi (but only if you go fast. By that I mean, if you aren't doing speedrunning tier strats or something, you have nothing to worry about).

Possible future features if I'm bored MAYBE:
  • single player Luigi mode. With physics (literally full meme).
  • I haven't inserted the overworld level menu thingy, cause porting every single thing from SMA2 wasn't really my objective, but I may add it if I feel like anyway.
  • idk

Gotta do a full playthrough of SMW again now with this.

while some things in the GBA version of SMA2-SMW seem to be worse, other few things were made BETTER such as game saving.

In SMA2 for GBA, I can save my game ANYTIME, EVEN on the overworld map AND while playing a level by pressing START. Also beating Bowser in his castle after the ending scenes also allow the game to be saved. No need to clear just switch palaces, ghost houses, fortresses, castles and certain Special levels just to save the game. the Save options in SMA2 are like SMAS for SNES [Continue, Save & Continue, Save & Quit]

Can't do that yet with current version of SMW Advanced hack but I'll give it a full playthrough anyway.

also on SMA2, fire mario & cape mario turn back to super mario when hit by an enemy or spikes.
i've never played the gba version. But alot these features make me want to playthrough again. Thanks for releaseing this.
Thanks, it is exactly that i want from SMW:)

the ingame menu is not needed, if mario and luigi are not both playable in single player.
in my opinion luigi playable (switchable) and his own ability are the better features of the GB game.

I Hope in a future version with luigi switchable and with his own phisics, maybe with the in game diary :)
Add MSU-1 Support
Change Luigi graphics to match Super Mario Advance 2
Restore the SMW Title Screen (maybe keep Advanced as subtitle)
Change Luigi Physics (optional patch maybe)
Make Toggle for Single Player Mario or Luigi (optional patch maybe)
Restore Mario x # and Luigi x # in the status for lives instead of M and L
Add Function to Save, Save and Quit, etc. at any time.
This was exactly what I was looking for. After applying the autosave patch (which I pretty much apply to all hacks), I feel like I have the best version of SMW. Thanks for doing this!

Two minor glitches in the ending sequence:

When mario and company watch the yoshi eggs hatch, the background is a fortress entrance instead of yoshi's house. Maybe they got lost.

The text for the enemies is messed up a bit. The ' and " are replaced by feather and star icons.

To really polish this, make the dragon coin in the autoplay sequence in the beginning a peach coin when all dragon coins are found.

where can I download this version?
There are a few pretty huge issues with this hack.
1. Probably the biggest issue is that when you game over all of your dragon coins get reset meaning collecting them all would be very annoying.
2. The power-up system still uses the SNES style even though one of the most noticeable changes in Advance was that when you got hit as Cape/Fire Mario you turned back to BIG Mario not to LITTLE Mario. Leaving this change out is pretty confusing.
3. Small details from Advance are not in this hack for example losing the bonus game still gives you the "yay I won" animation even though losing it in Advance has an unique animation. Some overworld details from Advance were also omitted like top secret area's sprite

This with the autosave mod is definitely the best way to experience SMW but leaving all of those things out and 1. don't really help this hack.
nice hack! :D

Found an older discussion about SMW on Reddit. But I can't download anything from the list on SWMcentral. Can anyone share files via dropbox or something? My antivirus is blocking everything...

Me either, currently struggling with the same problem, please share the files by other means.
No file hosted on SMW Central's various sections contain viruses or malware of any kind, so what your antivirus is picking up is just false positives. You might want to disable it when downloading from SMWC.
I was hoping to find a good vanilla SMW with SMA additions exactly like this for 2 player play with less skilled partners, I feel that this fits that need nicely. Thanks for doing this, I'm excited to check this out with a friend.
This seems like a good idea for a hack adding in all the features from the GBA version, but there's still plenty of things that need porting and updating. One minor thing I might mention is Yoshi's arms are still brown. One major would be no intro cutscene from the original. All of the best features should be ported to the SNES, however, I appreciate what you've accomplished so far.

The title screen seems like a downgrade though, it's best to leave it to the vanilla version to not take from the experience. Thanks
