[114] CANCELLED (Read the latest post for info!)

Hey, so i'm back with my brand new theme for VLDC. It's a haunted theme, and it's where Mario explores a haunted Mansion filled with treasures. Can Mario get to the end and find that Mystic Orb and become rich?

The area was going to be pseudo-puzzleish, but I don't want the level to drag on for too long. *CoughHostelCough*

A thing to keep in mind: The higher you go, the more dangerous it becomes. When you go higher up in floors, the theme changes as well.

(This was an inspiration of Monster Manor/Streetpass Mansion in StreetPass Mii Plaza.)

Here, have some screenshots of the first section:

The starting of the level.

Whoa, where did that Chargin' Chuck come from?

Careful you don't run too much, or you'll get a Koopa or Goomba to the face.

Well, that's all for now, but in the meantime, check out the WIP background.

I could brighten the place up a bit with a bit more aesthetics...But not until the level's finished. Comments/Suggestions?

EDIT: YES, I know Spelunking means exploring caves. I couldn't think of anything better at this point.

the aesthetics and palettes are looking great, Falconpunch!

although mario is looking a bit too bright, in my opinion, the background and foreground colors blend together nicely to form a spooky ambiance. but other than that, there's really nothing wrong with it so far so keep it up.

expecting more screenshots soon!
My Inspiring Quotes on Personal Growth and Change:

"Resolved financial/personal problems equal greater growth!"

"The only constant thing in life is change; nothing is set in stone. The old is replaced with the new. Forgive yourself for past mistakes. When many different problems in your life are resolved (personal, financial, etc.), newfound strength and confidence is gained in the process. Usually, failures, lack of assertiveness, disappointments, incompetence, low self-esteem and lack of self-respect, financial struggles, and setbacks can cause us to change and take action to solve any problem, leading to increased strength and confidence. This you learn from experience.

I have been experiencing this aforementioned newfound strength and confidence myself for the past FOUR to EIGHT years or so, getting stronger with each passing year, learning with each mistake I make and becoming more joyful in the process. Because of this newfound confidence I've acquired over the years, finding my passion is of utmost importance in 2022! You can develop this strength and confidence in yourself as well!"

To whoever's reading this, you are amazing and you are capable of doing equally amazing things. Gather confidence and be yourself! Say goodbye to the old you and welcome the new you! It wants to arise every moment, but you don't let it. Learn from your mistakes and never make that mistake again! Find your passion and live it!"

Finding my passion in life, but I may still be active on SMWCentral from time to time. Still enjoy playing many hacks, but I'm widening my perspective on life and opening myself to the new.
This reminds me of my entry last year, except not horrible. Good work!
3spooky5me.

It reminds me of one dark level that used an exanimated lightning effect. Looks really good, I like the dark atmosphere. Your palettes and the extra fog create a dark, spooky effect. Good job!
So... is there going to be a cave to explore in this level?

If not, then why is this level called Spooky "Spelunking" if it has nothing to do with caves?

Saying this again since you didn't read the whole post:

Thanks, but Mario's palette can't really be changed since powerup problems.

@Wormer21: You're talking about Stormwood Manor, but thanks!

@SuperAgentYoshi: Huh, I see. Darkest Woods did kinda suck.

That's a good name, but the thing is: It's not a haunted FOREST, it's a haunted MANSION. PLEASE read the first post BEFORE posting so you guys know what i'm going for.

Mortifying Mansion then
Pretty much done with the first section, except I will probably add 1 more decoration to the ground, probably related to the undead or something.

Large Image Warning

The "CHEATER!!" at the top of the level is to yell at the people who decide to cheat the level by looking in the level in LM. when the hack comes out, it will work as good. (This was inspired from Lynnes saying "LEVEL LOOKER" in his VLDC7 level.

Comments?

I really like this. As the others have said, the palette work is pretty cool and the concept is nice. I love how you start outside of the mansion, it really sets the mood. About Mario's palette though, I think it's actually best if he sticks out a bit more like does in the screenshots you've shown so far. This is because he should be the center of the player's attention at all times pretty much, you know? Just my two cents, you might disagree.

But great work so far! #w{=)}
Minor update, just testing out something for a section of the level.

I kinda worry my level will be too cluttered, so I made sure no level has more than 0D screens in hex. This level you see here has that for a reason.

Too cheery for a supposedly haunted level, imo. This bonus-like FG certainly doesn't go much well with the castle BG, they kinda clash. I think the curtains + brown platforms work well with the environment, though. So yeah, I suggest to keep testing, maybe.

Yeah, well here's the thing: The theme of this floor is like a stately mansion, so that's what I was going for with this theme. I can make it darker though to make it more scary.

Can't deny that.

*Cough misleading death arrow
It could be one of those creepy funhouses filled with spooky scary skeletons Dry Bones. So that checkered ledge doesn't seem too off if you ask me.

Yeah, instead of just going with multiple themes, I COULD make it a haunted funhouse.

It's too bad, I really wanted to go with the themes from Streetpass Mii Plaza's Monster Manor floors. They were Classic, Wooden, Stone, Stately, and Ominous. I then felt like it would be too cluttered and too long if I did this, so i'm going this idea instead.

Too bad the name doesn't fit anymore. How about "Frightening Funhouse"?

I think the name is fine. I think you can make the ground palette out of dark, yet colourful palette (dark pale greens, blues, etc.). It would look like a dark, abandoned house. Looks good so far.
Trying out a few things. The canvasses will be in for sure, but i'm trying out a bunch of other things first:

I think I got a good start on this. I need to find a good tile for the corners of the ledges. I could also probably change the edge of that canvass tile a little bit so it would look better with the left/right edge but that'd probably break the rules...

Opinions?

I think you can extend the shading to prevent this cutoff, but I dunno how it would look. The rest looks good, but somehow I think the coloured BG blocks should be a bit darker.
