Mario Maker. What are people's thoughts?

First off.. long time lurker.. used to be an active member..
And if this is the wrong section for this, i do apologize.
Nintendo recently showcased a trailer for "Mario Maker" a game in which you can create your own stages.. and maybe more down the line.

So what do people think?
Might this effect the folks here who make stuff?
I mean, here we have a totally legit means of making your own mario stuff, so i can't help but wonder how it's going to effect folks who love making mario stuff.

Oh, and here's the trailer.

You can also just search and find out more.
IIRC we were talking about this a bit in the E3 thread already.
I don't use IRC, so i won't be able to join the conversation.
Never use IRC, i get irritated using and setting up to talk in IRC, so i don't want to bother with it.. sorry.

Plus, is it REALLY going to hurt them to talk about it more in the forum where it's easier for people to get to?

Plus i see no links anywhere to help join, no info.. nothing on the web site.. not a thing.

Sorry... TOTALLY missread what you said.... several times in a row lol..

What E3 thread? >_<
He said "IIRC," not "IRC." That's "if I recall correctly."

The e3 thread is over here; enjoy!

Other Submissions of mine!
yeah... i'm an idiot... sorry...
I don't see Mario Maker ending up as a replacement for Lunar Magic at all. If anything you will just be able to screw around with it and make a few short levels to share online. And I don't think Nintendo will let us make any level more complicated than SMB1 tier levels. It's great to see that its actually a whole new engine and not just the same SMB engine. So stacking enemies and even placing wings on them actually works. They even said it themselves. It's more of a toy than a creative tool.
Actually, in more recent interviews before E3 ended, they said a lot more is coming... the E3 demo was early stages, and more is to come. So it's still a possibility of it becoming more of a replacement.

At first, I was like;
"ew what a piece of shit lunar magic is way better than this**"

Then, I was like:
"HOLY SHIT I WANT IT"

I wonder how they got the idea? Anyways, I think Mario Maker will end up as a replacement for Lunar Magic**. If "a lot more" comes, than it may be better than Lunar Magic. BUT I DONT HAVE A FUCKING WII U. FUCK U. Anyways, even if it replaces Lunar Magic, I am pretty sure people will use Lunar Magic (including me cause I DONT HAVE A FUCKING FUCK U).

** = maybe
The idea had nothing to do with Lunar Magic.. everyone seems to think that... it's that SMBX that gave them the idea.. in fact at one point they shut down the original web site and made it a site that redirects you to a site of theirs... so odds are they seen the attention IT got, and decided that would work.... they say it's something they came up with on their own.. but we all know better... if they said the idea was "SMBX" they would maybe have to pay royalties.

1: why would they have to pay royalties to redigit for mentioning SMBX? He doesn't own Mario, he can't profit off a Mario fangame.
2: I'm still very skeptical about his claims that Nintendo sent him a C&D. Even though the website is currently in Nintendo's hands, I've heard reports that Nintendo never sends notices the way he claimed they did...

Regardless, they stated during the Treehouse part of the stream where their inspiration came from: the people who develop the tools to make the levels for their games. They stated that normall, the tool developers don't use the tools, they just make them and send them to the next department, but this one time, they made a tool and started playing with it and having tons of fun, so Nintendo thought, "Hey! We should give this to the public!" And so we have Mario Maker.
<Adam> I feel like smwc is a prostitute now, because we put up a porn ad for money
I think it could very much damage the community. Most came here after a google search for something like "Making Mario levels" and if there's an offical solution, that could disappear since they'll just go to Mario Maker.
I don't think at all that Mario Maker should be compared to Lunar Magic or SMBX. They're all completely different and shouldn't be compared.

I really like that there's more graphical styles to choose from. I hope there's a SMW one.
You speak as if you know how this is going to turn out.
What we saw at E3 was more or less just a demo, early stages of what they're working on. There could be and probably IS a lot more to come.

The heck of it is, this is way more legit than hacking and so forth, and it's something more official.

If they can add the features Takashi Tezuka mentions wanting in this, i can see it being better... because as it stands, i gave up making anything mario or mario like with Lunar Magic long ago, as a LOT of things i would have liked to have done would require a LOT of programming know how i simply do not have and was never able to wrap my head around.

Where as i gave up making anything with LM and even SMBX, i can see myself finishing something with this..

Takashi Tezuka even mentions wanting a music editing tool as part of the software. Then people could share it. It would make things a lot easier then i have here.

I don't think it will take anyone away here though, the ones already here are more than likely going to keep coming here.

And do you really want more people coming here?
You really want more low quality hacks?

I think it won't hurt anything in the long run.

Takashi Tezuka even mentions wanting other characters and graphics styles in this..

I hope he gets what he wants cause it means i will get what i want.

Honestly though, i hope this is part of something bigger.. like a full blown and advanced version/sequal to Mario Paint.

I been screaming for years for a newer better Mario Paint.

I hope i get my wish.

For the heck of it, i'm gonna also post this quote from Takashi.

This information comes from Takashi Tezuka…
“Obviously, there will be other graphical styles included.
And nothing’s been decided yet, but I’d also like to include other graphics that aren’t Mario.”

“No, it won’t be top-down (if something like Zelda graphics were included). It’s always going to be a 2D platformer.”

- Tezuka said he plans to integrate more enemy and object types than what appeared in the E3 demo

- Tezuka also emphasized the inspiration Mario Maker draws from Mario Paint

- He said that he hopes to include features similar to those of Mario Paint, including a music composition feature

- As for Internet sharing and Miiverse integration, Tezuka admits those details are still being worked out as well, but that he’s mindful of players’ desire to show off their level designs to friends “Sharing with friends is really the whole point of making levels.”

If it wasn't for the online game super mario flash, I would have never discovered I wanted to ROM Hack mario games, and find my way here. So when this new game comes out, SMW Central can get ready to say Hi to it's new family! Because this game is going to inspire the hacker within of many naturally skilled level designers, who never knew they had it, to the hacking industry.

Also, if the final version of the game has a SMW Creator mode, I am going to throw a chair across the room

To be quite honest, with all of the progress Lunar Magic has made throughout the years, I think it would still be a better Level Editor than Mario Maker could ever create for Super Mario World.

Well if your talking about Lunar Magic, on it's own, than I disagree. But it's ability to work together with other programs like YY-CHR, sprite and block tool makes it a better program for incorporating innovation. But Lunar Magic as a program, will probably not be any different. Infact, I saw game play where Mario Maker can do things Lunar Magic can't, that is, without the help of some other program.

In its current state, Mario Maker is merely a toy, not a tool. It isn't and is never going to be a replacement for ROMhacking.
If mario maker will be successful, farewell SMWCentral or any mario game editor...

Don't count on it. The potential of ROM hacking far exceeds what Mario Maker will let users do, unless you can script/program for Mario Maker. There's a bigger chance you'd wake up with $1,000,000 under your pillow.

Just look above you...
If it's something that can be stopped, then just try to stop it!
