Mario: The Wicked Islands

Introducing my first good attempt at making a decent fair hack.

Story:
Mario has token his vacation with Peach and his friends to the beautiful, Waka Taka Islands, a peaceful and tranquil place where all superstars go to relax and catch some sun. Mario and his friends were all waiting to arrive so they could take a nap. When they got their though, things weren't as they hoped.

Waka Taka Islands have been taken over by Bowser! Of course, Mario expected this, seeing as Bowser was always after the Princess of The Mushroom Kingdom and how he would do anything to get her and rule her monarchy. The Island wasn't as it was suppose to look either. Piranha Plants were sprouting by the dozens in seconds, Koopa's and Goomba's were running the hotels, Wigglers could be seen in the horizon roaming through the town of Waka Taka.

Mario knew he had to do something, even if it risked his vacation time. He told all of his friends to get back on the ship and travel back to the Mushroom Kingdom while he took of business here, and he would come back after everything is settled. So with that, Peach, Toadsworth, and all of Mario's friends went back to the Mushroom Kingdom. What awaited Mario on this Island, what was lurking in the depths of the forests and caverns, and who was the figure painted on a sign by the docks? Mario was soon to find out!

First level: Muncher Infestation

This is actually quite good considering you're calling it your first attempt at making a decent hack. The level design is rather nice - no glaring bugs, it isn't overly difficult, etc. It all seems to work nicely for the first level. Also, I might have missed it, but did you draw the graphics? They're also pretty good, although the shading seems funky in a few places (most notably, the light parts of the dirt).

Good stuff.


That's actually pretty good. Except the background water is the same as the foreground water which was confusing. And the BG started scrolling REALLY fast for some reason at the end. And you should apply the fadefix patch. But I like the story, the music matches the level, the level design is good, the graphics match the story. Overall this looks like it'll be fun.

Who knows when I'll have
something to put here.

Also yeah I've been practicing a lot with lunar magic and making a good level plus good hack. Probably made like 40 shitty levels before this. That is, not good attempts, this is actually my first good one and I think it turned out well. #w{xD}

Rabees: I said in annotations I will apply fadefix. Also believe it or not the BG and FG water are from different people and different FG/BG sets but surprisingly they use the same gfx.....odd.

There was a bit of slowdown around 0:45.
And if the "sunlight" was coming from the right, then why is the land brighter to the left also...
:/
But anyways, this looks like a decent hack, not too hard. Looks fun!
Update: took out the scrolling.

Mockingod: Slowdown was my computer, had 10 windows open in opera and 5 tabs so i'm pretty sure it was me. Also I flipped the lighted ground so it should be equal on both sides. It isn't more brighter on the left, I swear.
Oh and thanks.

One more update: should have a new level or half of one done tomorrow. It'll be most likely grassy instead of water/beach themed.

Hmm, looks like you're off to a good start, the music and gfx seem to flow nicely together, and the design for the levels looks good, and I cant see any bugs other than what was mentioned. Keep it up, and good luck!
Wow pretty good for your "first good attempt".

I thought the level was designed very well.
However if you'll allow me to nitpick a few things:

0:35 Smiling Clouds seem out of place in this level
Past 1:05 (when you're on the flying platform) the platforms the munchers are on look kind of plain, they
could use a grassy top (like the other ground in the level)

I'm loving the graphics you're using, keep up the good work.
Pretty good CDPower- ever thought about making a userbar?
Oh, and one thing:
The munchers need to have more shading- as aquamentus said- they are plain.

The level was good, but although it's not to hard for World 1, I usually feel that levels like these are harder than usual, so I would place the level closer to the end of
World 1. (But then again, it's probably just me :P)

Oh, and the first level was also nice.
