Kain's Quest (Demo 1.0 is HERE!)

Standard

"A SMW hack starring a Final Fantasy character? Blasphemy!"

That's correct. Kain's Quest has the player (you) play as Kain from FF4.

"What's it about?" (story)

After the end of Final Fantasy 4, Kain leaves on a quest to redeem himself. His destination is the birthplace of dragons and dragoons. However, when he arrives, he finds the land void of dragons. However, he senses their spirits still linger. The spirits all tell Kain one thing...

An evil has taken hold of the land, wiping out the dragons and will turn the world into a demonic realm.

Kain realizes that it is his duty to purge the evil and make the land whole again with nothing but his wits and the teachings of the dragoon.

"What's new about it?" (graphics and music)

Currently, Kain's Quest uses backgrounds, foregrounds, and music from the ExGFX and Custom Music sections here at SMW Central. The sprite however, was edited to fit SMW by me.

"What's different about it?" (asm)

The asm was all downloaded from the patches section here at SMW Central. The three major changes are:

-A life bar (via KilloZapit's "SMW Health Bar patch")
-Ammo (via Tatrion's "Coin Wallet" patch and 1024's "Fireball Ammo Counter" patch)
-Straight Fireballs (via KPhoenix's "Straight Fireball" patch)

Cool stuff, do you need any help with this?" (help)

Most of the work is being taken care of, but if you want to help me in any way, you can contact my AIM (Atmapalazzo) and see if there is anything I need.

The door looks cut off. I suggest that you use two door bottoms stacked on top of each other to make it look non-cutoff. Also, part of the right overworld screenshot's pallete looks bad.
The big hills with eyes are cutoff. Otherwise, this looks like it may be a good hack.

Good eye with the door, I actually fixed that after taking the shots (I hoped nobody would notice >.>)

As for the palette, any suggestions? (My art IRL is almost always black and white, because color and I don't get along)
Your submaps look pretty good, though I don't entirely like the palette of the second screen. The cliff lines are lighter when they should be darker. Also, in both submaps, directly about the first castle has some cut-off cliff tiles.

As for the rest of it, it looks alright I guess. There are some tiles that are cut off, most notably the door in the second last screenshot. There are also some status bar palette issues (cave screens) that you might want to fix up.

EDIT: beaten by faster posters.
whew, fixed the OW and status issues.
The FG palettes in screens 3 and 4 are a little bit ugly in my opinion. Maybe try making them a tad bit more dark?
Update!

World 1: Complete!

Up next: World 2, Sprucing up for Demo Release

And for you visual people:

The return of some very serious enemies.

What's this shell here for...

...
oh...

Magikoopas and Hammer Bros? Oh my.
A dragoon as the main character in a platformer? Why hasn't someone thought of this before?
*first look in thread*

Aw dammit, I was about to make a shoot-em-up!

Anyway, it looks good, but you may want to spruce up the palette more; it's a bit ugly.
Well, I decided to try and update this thread daily :). However, today's update still takes us to the first castle.

I also want to mention that two new positions have opened up.

First: Palette Reviewer
Second: Level Design Reviewer

In other words, I could use two beta testers to test the levels and tell me how to spruce up the palette (though feel free to point out anything).
I'd be glad to be a beta tester.
I have experience as a beta tester and I have skill in the department.

As for the level reviewer, I'm a master on reviewing levels and stages.

*checks credit document*

why yes, yes I did (though I altered their throwing sprite a little.

Thank you =) and hope you don't mind

Edit:
Sepharos, I will be putting an updated patch in the bin soon. I'll PM you when I do.
Update:

Two things have conspired against me, backgrounds and parallel worlds. I have decided to remove the parallel worlds patch from the hack, so I spent a lot of yesterday transferring the levels, music, et c.

As for the backgrounds. After much searching for ExGFX that could be used for the background and NOT use status bar
...
I failed.

So no update for today either.
I'm still testing your levels Atmap, while also making another preview for my hack.
So far I see no problems with your levels.
*sigh*

Sickness and the Conflux release on Magic Online conspire to prevent me from getting an update. I've decided to change the updates to biweekly.

I also decided to remove parallel worlds in order to open up more design room.

BONUS:

2nd World Screenshot

I also fixed the 8x8 tile by the ocean and fixed the exit pipe towards the end of the video.

Poll:

In my hack, I am adding in the hammer and boomerang powerups because yoshi and the feather have been removed. They can't use a different palette so I'm think the flower (lightning) should not get a different palette either. Yay or Nay?

Yay:
Nay:
This hack has ALOT of potential, and completely out of the ordinary. SO in my eye's it's something to look out for.I can't wait for a demo.
If anyone needs help with custom Character GFX,PM me.
<Note> You will have to have a progress thread in order for me to work on GFX for you.No random requests.

It's probably going to take more time than I thought to get Demo 1 out (which will contain worlds 1 and 2. While Demo 2 will contain worlds 3 and 4 as well) I had to spend this past week fixing glitches and reworking world one. So hopefully by Easter I'll have this egg ready.
Atmap, is there a more current version I could test at the moment?

I think lightning is a good choice, but not the best.
Hounestly, I can't think of something better than lightning, but I have a fealing it can be better.

Great work so far, by the way, I'm happy to see you moving along.

- Regards, Sepharos.
