[Non-Level] What are your plans for the VLDC next year (or maybe sooner)?

For me, I promise to:
  • Improve my level design habits;
  • Become a (fan) judge, hopefully;
  • And, of course, getting the chance of not going to the worst place

I am hoping for a chance to be a formal judge for VLDC again. If not, then I will definitely make another level. Either way, I intend to enjoy it as much as I have enjoyed this one. This contest was also my first time seeing the "new" layer 3 background building feature and getting used to how it works, even though I didn't do more than reassign some tiles' palettes with it this time.

Huh, you were a judge before (as the word 'again' might imply)? For which VLDC?

My Discord server. It has a lot of archived ASM stuff, so check that out!

VLDC 4, 6, and 7. These days it seems there are new trends dominant in a number of levels but there are also folks submitting the traditional and puzzle levels that have been a staple and still the occasional experimental levels that blindside everyone. It also draws in tons of lurkers to make a post now, including first timers. VLDC was always fun, and it changed a lot in a good way. It's even less predictable.

Participate (maybe)
It's easily the best thing I've done
So why the empty numb?
For level idea, perhaps a level that combine plantaport glitch from my VLDCX entry, and the horizontal teleport sprite from Stivi's VLDC12 entry?

I also really need to start learning how to aesthetic. I think I can't really get into top 10 without it.
Perhaps I'll try to upgrade some of my visuals. Who knows.

Blue Leaf got 6th place in VLDC9 without mind-blowing aesthetics and I guess you could make it into top 10 with a novel idea with top notch execution.

As for me, I plan to finish a level before the deadline this time. I don't know if I'll reimagine my unfinished level or come up with an absolutely new idea. I'd have to actually get inspired to reuse my gimmick from this year and SuperMarisa1999 had basically stolen my idea before I reveal it, which means I'd have to get a new one.

I also intend to ackchyually not procrastinate as I promised this year.
I have a Discord server as well! (by joining, you agree to the rules)

i'll definitely not be a judge again. last time i got about 10 levels in before realizing writing an entire essay for each level wasn't going to cut it in the time constraints (an old habit if you look at my music moderation logs). i also just didn't have much fun doing it, at least expected it to be more fun. to each their own i guess.

what i am excited for is this supposed music contest we might be having next year. the details seemed kind of fuzzy, but i'm sure the organizers can come up with something fun that will encourage competitiveness and will also involve the actual level designers.

speaking of which. are there any plans for a full-scale collab hack, either this year or next year? does it depend on the amount of entries or do you feel like the amount of effort isn't worth it anymore? those collab hacks were really fun to work on and the overworlds were a sight to see.
I think I'll make my own port and make it the theme of my level for next VDLC.
Alternatively I've been digging the aesthetics of "mold", especially the green and blue and white ones that develop on bread. So I may go with those palettes.

Maybe I can mix both concepts. Maybe I'll have forgotten at that time.
Either way I hope I can improve my understanding of the vanilla mechanics and glitches, so I could come up with some noice setups.

probably not enter again. usually i can come up with a gimmick pretty quickly, but vldc11 took a ton of effort for me, and vldc12 was literally a struggle/serious burnout to even get through it by the end. i can't keep up with all of these modern vanilla tricks people are blowing minds with, and i think my idea mill has officially run dry.

still really interested in seeing what others can produce, though. this year has some crazy good levels.
I'll just watch. I'm not that good mixing vanilla assets, but I like observing other people's ideas and gimmicks. I'm more inclined of participating of a CLDC than a VLDC, to be honest.

Make a level, lol. I did try to make a level but motivation hit me and I didn't feel like to make a level last weekend.

It certainly was teased by FP.
I think scaling down the level (so that it doesn't fill the screen in LM) is a good first step. Better to refine smaller things than to leave a huge/empty/cluttered chunk of the level.
Other than that, more efficient usage of ExGFX files. I'm fairly new to tileset mixing/editing, so whatever speeds up the designing process is a win in my book.
1. Try to learn ExGfx so I can do something different and new for next years level.

2. Wait 4-6 months for the results of this years VLDC.

3. Find a new "entanglement" to get into with somebodies wife!
