Description: In this metroidvania style hack, Peach has been kidnapped once again, but this time, not by Bowser. To be strong enough to rescue her, you'll need to explore the world to find some powerful power-ups, use those new skills to travel through dangerous paths and find hidden areas to reveal secret passwords.

Featuring:
- Health system
- Permanent power-ups
- Many custom graphics, music and sprites
- Every level is connected so there are 0 exits
- The equivalent of approximately 20 levels
- Lots of secret rooms
- One bonus room with a light kaizo level challenge

V1.2:

Following many comments received, I modified the end to make it a little less anticlimactic by adding NPCs and a whole new level.

I can't believe it's even possible to make this type of game from SMW, but Domokun did a terrific job. In true Metroidvania fashion, unlocking the powerups needed to progress feels immensely satisfying. I imagine it took some effort to ensure the player could never permanently trap themselves, and even though I did a bit of sequence breaking with a kaizo trick, I still didn't find a softlock.

Music and aesthetics suit the areas they represent. The areas themselves balance an open feeling of exploration with deliberately designed obstacles that have a set method of traversal. The difficulty hits a sweet spot above vanilla SMW but never rising to frustration. I love that death pits have been replaced by trap rooms for the player to escape. It adds to the feeling of a single, connected world that has no out-of-bounds areas.

While I was largely blown away, I do have some critiques I hope you consider if planning a 2.0 release.

(1) I think the powerup switching controls are unintuitive and bad. It would be better if tapping L toggled the fire flower on and off, and the same for R with the cape. Another way you could do it is to have L cycle through the power ups, and then have R for the dash move which would be better than X.

(2) There is a lot of not-so-fun backtracking in the hack. Typically Metroidvanias have warp points that allow fast travel between areas after you complete them. I don't know if this is possible, but it would improve the game if you could unlock overworld movement between completed areas.

(3) The stakes, storyline, and final objective are not emphasized enough. This created two drawbacks for me. The first is that I had no idea where to go once I had all the powerups. The second is that when I finally figured out what I should be doing, defeating the final boss and seeing the very brief ending left no emotional impact on me. Like Serena says in the comment below, it's anticlimactic. More NPCs to give hints and lore (e.g. to build up the final boss as a threat) would make the game better.

Even with these complaints, it's an easy 5/5. I hope this inspires a whole genre of Metroidvania Mario hacks.

After (I think) 100%-ing the game, I can confidently say it was the most fun I've had in unofficial Mario games in a while. Powers and secrets were super fun to acquire and use - travelling through levels with an endgame build (and in general) was simply a blast. However, I don't think there was enough use for coins in the game and the final stretch
didn't have enough build-up. Maybe I wasn't paying enough attention, but I only realized after dying and seeing the final level name on the map that I am right at the end. It was a bit anti-climatic
. That was not anywhere near enough to ruin my experience though.
Definitely deserving of a 5-star rating. ^_^

I just completed the main game. There are a couple of things I still haven't done but I can say confidently that this is an excellent Metroidvania-style adventure and probably the absolute most fun I've had playing SMW romhacks.
- A lot of nice touches that add to the atmosphere (no spoilers). None of it is super radical, but the way areas lead to one another and, on occasion, change really lends a lot of credibility to the hack's world. Great choice of graphics and music help too.
- Hits the sweet spot of difficulty for me. It's hard enough to be exciting but never frustrating.
- World layout is superb, you really feel like you're on an expedition and far from home.
- Level design is overall excellent. Lots of sprites and variety, very little jank. The hack features several custom bosses, but surprisingly they're utilized fairly well--no 2008-2012 style glitchy 10-hit slugfests.
I have some very minor constructive criticism/ideas for updates, but I will keep those to myself for now and send them to you in PM if you're interested.
Anyway--this is one of the most fun things I've played lately; it's so good I might just make my own hack.

This is the first hack I've played in years that I can't put down. I'm only maybe a third or so of the way through but this is already really, really, really good.

Great hack but I found a problem in that in the pipe going down to the right in the first area then down to the left you die instead of coming out of it.

Easy fix, probably just set the entrance too high.

The hack author has no obligation of making a walkthrough of their hack. Please don't demand stuff from the others like that. It's becoming quite annoying to read comments like this. You only know to demand unreasonable things of hack creators.

The hack is labeled as a Standard: Very Hard, so in short, it's not a hack aimed to new players. #smrpg{sick}
