Version History: View

Length: 22 exit(s)
Type: Kaizo: Intermediate
Description: Dedicated to speedrunner, streamer, and one of my best friends Chambo.

This is my first ever hack. I went into this process with no Lunar Magic knowledge, and I'm coming out of it just as confused.

This game has 22 exits of fast paced kaizo platforming with a moderate difficulty curve. It is meant to challenge you in a fun and (mostly) fair way. It took all of my free time over the course of roughly 18 months to learn and build.

Featuring:
-Character selection (play as Mario or Chambo)
-Retry system
-No HUD
-All secret exits in first halfs
-Exit counter on overworld
-Custom palettes, graphics, and music
-Custom cover art
-Automatic saving on overworld
-Shoutout portrait rooms
-No water or cape levels
-Trolls and kaizo traps
-Multiple unique bosses
-2 Switch palaces
-No lore

A secret code for unlocking the any% route is revealed post-credits.

Special thanks to Bucket for all his help with the final boss, and to all my playtesters. This game wouldn't be what it is without you.

Good luck, and enjoy!

Another one of my absolute favorite hacks ever! This game was absolutely incredible from start to finish. Beautiful overworld, great soundtrack, and great artwork throughout.

But where this game really shines is the gameplay and level design. I heard an interesting quote about Doom once that said the game makes you *feel* like a powerful player, regardless of where your true skill level actually lies. In this game, Caustow Castle gave me that same feeling, which is an incredibly hard thing to do in gaming and a testament to the author's abilities. The secret exit to
Boggly Woods and Tetris themed boss fight that follows
was incredible. Followed immediately by the very chill yet extremely fun Blue Switch Palace. A Tool to Discard was such a fun way to keep me interested in the early mid-game. 32x32 Castle is a legend in and of itself.

Intermediate gameplay, but the difficulty really ramps up in the final world. Absolute Vengeance lives up to it's name, and was one of the most challenging motor skills levels I've played in my short kiazo career. The final jump
onto the Koopas to get into the pipe
is deliciously tricky; I think mathematically I died about a zillion times on that level.

Nothing too difficult shell wise and a lot of good sections of fun and clean platforming throughout. The Final Castle was definitely a fun and satisfying way to wrap things up.

5/5 and I can't wait to see what the author does next.

This is a really fun hack, great level design, fun platforming, nice music. I do have some criticisms, but they are minor.

-The motor shell level 2nd section I found extremely frustrating, because it was really awkward doing motor shell jumps without claw grip. I eventually did it without because Claw is more awkward anyway.
-I found the final boss very frustrating. There was no tell whether the next attack was going to be a jump or a sprint straight at you, and the attacks come out instantly. I was able to do it by counting the number of hits, and just standing next to him, then doing a max height running jump over just as the previous attack is finished (if you count the number of hits, he does +1 attack per 2 hits) This was pretty reliable, but some attacks stacked over each other in annoying ways. (5x fire pillars back-to-back)

Still 5/5 despite these frustrations, I enjoyed my time.

Finally got round to playing through this and boy what a hack, awesome setups and fun levels. Some levels pushed my kaizo abilities but not too much felt too tight or unfair. Amazing job for a first hack!

So sorry that's happening! I think your best bet would be waiting on the 1.1 release. You should be able to rename the game so that you don't lose any progress from your save.

This has indeed worked! Thanks for fixing this so quickly. I'm very much looking forward to the rest of the hack.

Replaying the level should give you the clear. My apologies!

No worries! Playing the level again from the midway and clearing it didn't work, however. Do I need to replay it from the start? If so, I don't actually know how to get there.

Do I need to beat the first switch palace to move beyond Pleasant Path? When I beat that level, I get to choose between "Continue" and "End". Nothing happens when I choose the former and I get back to the title screen if I choose the latter. Is this intended?

This is an unintended bug that happens from obtaining too many 1-ups while playing through 'Pleasent Path', causing the life counter to roll over. I am releasing a 1.1 in the next couple of days which will have a fix for this issue. Replaying the level should give you the clear. My apologies!

what an incredible game from start to finish. very consistent difficulty curve that makes the early game approachable and gives the player the opportunity to "get good" as they progress. fun, fast-paced level design that just begs you to speedrun it. can't wait for the next one!

I am beyond blown away by this hack! Not only b/c my name is on it, but the incredible amount of love and polish that is in this hack is insane! The difficulty curve of this hack is perfect and you know what you're getting into from the very first level. Chester smashed it out of the park with his first ever game and I can't wait to see what he comes up with next!

Absolutely wonderful hack! Every level has received the same care and attention to detail and have their very own unique feel. The setups are fresh and fun and always allow for solid blind reads. The music and aesthetics are all on point and really help pull you in to this beautifully crafted world. Recommend to every kaizo player out there. Congrats to Chester on an outstanding first dive into Romhacking. I look forward to more adventures in the future.
