Tebeo 2

Super Mario World Hacks → Tebeo 2

Submission Details

Name: Tebeo 2
Author: Nirv

Demo: No
Hall of Fame: No
Length: 20 exit(s)
Type: Kaizo: Intermediate
Description: Welcome!

Here I bring you more levels inspired by comics (in some way or form).

This hack is a bit harder and a little bit weirder than the first Tebeo, but I hope you can still enjoy it.

In a bunch of levels and setups I toyed with the idea of designing around multiple solutions, trying to keep them all fair, whatever you do to overcome them. So I encourage you to try different ideas when you get stuck somewhere, or something feels "too tight".

This game features 17 levels, that includes 20 exits in game (we get an exit in Yoshi's House, Credits and 1 secret exit), so it is shorter than it looks.

As a final note, thank you to dtothefourth for helping me every time I was confused, and for providing all the really awesome asm and sprites.

I hope you enjoy!

This hack feels like Tebeo's drunk uncle. I don't know yet if it's the young and cool uncle or the weird old one who constantly makes raunchy jokes. I'll have to play a bit more to come to a conclusion. But the music is dope, that's for sure.

Just like the first Tebeo, the hack makes really good use of creative concepts, often utilising some amount of custom ASM. And unlike the first Tebeo, this hack actually builds towards the end and has some really cool boss fights to boot.

Highly recommended.

Some slight spoilers about specific high / low points below.

I pretty much hated one of the levels (Silver Surfer), but luckily it was very short... just an all around odd level, it didn't really feel like SMW. Another issue I had was making a transition from spike ball to a flying question mark block in "Saga", that part alone made the first half of the level pretty annoying.

The basketball level felt way out of place, dunno why it is in this hack. It's good fun and all, just sticks out as something just "thrown in there" for the sake of it.

Swamp Thing was a level I thought I'd end up hating due to the awkward enemy placement, but it actually turned out to be a sleeper hit for me. The first half is just stock full of pure platforming goodness, and the second half is just plain cool.

This hack is pretty decent. It has some cool levels and obstacles, and the aesthetics are nice. However, it suffers from having many sections being based around a custom ASM gimmick/sprite with the only real obstacles being different types of regrabs and shell tricks. As a result, a lot of the levels feel similar to execute. This is a common thing I'm noticing with a lot of newer hacks, and this hack is no different. I personally wasn't a fan of a lot of the music too. Thanks for making. 3/5.

Sorry for only quoting the critical comment, but it caught my attention due to the "shell tricks" part, as there is one single shell jump in the whole game, and I am wondering why you felt that way.

Either way, thank you for playing!

A fantastic sophomore release, Tebeo 2 shows just how much Nirv has improved as a creator. Tebeo 2 has lots of dynamic level design that's pretty incredible, definitely one of my favorite hacks of 2021 so far.

One of my favorite kaizo releases this year, in a year with a scores of wonderful kaizo hacks being released. I especially loved your take on an RNG Castle and the Ignoble Plants tribute. Thanks so much Nirv. #w{<3}
