Submission Details

Name: R-ACK
Authors: Daizo Dee Von, Team JANK
Added:
Version History: View
Demo: No
Hall of Fame: No
Length: 50 exit(s)
Type: Standard: Very Hard
Description: R-ACK (Pronounced "Are Ah-ck") is a "No Rules" collaboration similar to the YUMPs and the VIPs where there is no level design standard. The title has a hidden meaning, referencing the abstract term "RomhACK" where anything goes so long as it's a romhack. ~omh~ is the successor, the missing letters of this game.

Featuring 35+ levels that totals to 50 exits. Set aside your expectations, as this hack is anything but normal. Actually, inside the chaos could be something normal? Who knows.

You control an entity known as "The Plumber" in search to find the good in the world of R-ACK. Your mission is to simply traverse the landscapes.

---

Warning: Includes flashy imagery in a couple levels.
Warning: Motion sickness can occur in The Camera Man is Drunk.

Disclaimer: Everyone who's made a level in this hack wanted to remain anonymous, so every name is a pseudonym. Unlike yump2, you won't find out who made what even after the game is over.

This hack uses the glitch tag specifically because one level (The Quest to save the Magical Fish) requires a small bit of block duplication to complete (can be avoided entirely by taking another path).

R-ACK is not compatible with SNES Classic due to SRAM Plus.

Current Version: 10.0.0. Includes a brand new reward for 50 Exit Completion and a brand new secret boss. See changes for more info.

A lot of this hack was "Oh, that's a fun idea!" followed by "Ugh why would you do it like that?"

Overall, I had fun, but there were some pretty kaizo-ish levels for an only Very Hard hack. Some levels I really, really did not enjoy, and only completed out of spite.

Still, I got all exits and did all bonus content, and if nothing else, the hack is impressive. Lots of funny gags here and there, and clever mechanics. Just sorta janky in a not-fun way from time to time, plus a couple of levels that I would rate beyond just Very Hard.

<3 Glad you enjoyed it. That sums up the hack fairly well.

A lot of the "why would you do this" stuff is kind of intertwined with the whole message at the end of the hack about
burning it all because all you see is the bad
. It's not at all something that should be done intentionally, but it is an inevitability in collab hacks (or any hack, or even game in general) that you will experience stuff that's pretty questionable or simply stuff that's very unenjoyable that "somehow" got in. The fact it's as well received as well as it did is actually flattering.

To deem an entire hack as bad because of a handful of questionable things is downright silly, which isn't at all saying you really anybody did, which I'm happy to see that being the case. There's actually kind of an interesting thing I hid in ~omh~ that I hope people find some day that really explains elaborates on the messaging.

I believe one should maintain a decent amount of quality control, as trying to do stuff bad intentionally doesn't work without a lot of consideration (there was a fair bit of moderation in R-ACK to attempt to keep the difficulty lower than YUMP2). But at the same time, there is a sense of making cursed stuff that probably can be embraced.

I'm currently crying so hard right now. This is seriously the most beautiful, well put together story ever. I can’t believe how magical it was JUMP. That part truly made me shed a tear. And especially at Light Lands that part was just so truly heart touching words can not describe the series of emotions I felt. I absolutely loved the climax it had insanely excellent detail. Oh and we can’t forget the conclusion. The conclusion was the greatest and saddest conclusion I have ever seen better than any of the books I have read. Thank you so much for creating this absolute masterpiece. This is essentially the most important masterpiece of Mario hacking history. It is a tragedy that this, it can’t be called a hack, but a transcendent emotional experience, will be inaccessible for most. It beautifully encapsulates the human struggle to its basics; suffering, pleasure, faith, despair. It connects with the characters within the viewers, individuals suppressed within our own subconscious. It stays vibrant, fresh, and revolutionizes the art of storytelling and filmmaking while making a damn of statement on what it means to be human. Entertaining, gripping, and simply exhilarating. This might be the most impactful piece of art I’ve come across in my life, and I’m definitely coming back to it in the near future to study it more deeply. this is an absolute masterpiece , I was brought to tears listening to this and seeing the drunk camera man countless times. it absolutely moved my soul , and I don't think I can ever be the same. this hack has changed my entire mental state , I am now at peace with who I am and what I will be doing later in my life. i have forgiven all my enemies and now I am a man of a pacifist life. I will move on , gotta move on , as the song says. the hack is so inspirational , it shares it vast wisdom with all of us , and we are all so lucky that it would bestow it's great gameplay with us. we are all children on R-ACK. hail R-ACK. hail R-ACK. The hack, with such peak gameplay and transcendal storytelling... This made me tear up. How could such a hack do such a thing? I'm struck by awe by this masterpiece. Especially when the player has to press every switch palace, then requiring all the switch palaces in a later level. I can hear the message from Billy Joel, and so as the beautiful sound of Grounded Disco feat. DJ Skeleton. The gameplay, music and everything can be played, enjoyed, seen and felt from a screen. You can really hear the breaths between team JANK, empathising their love for this hack. Truly what I call modern art. This was the most legendary performance by any hack I have ever played. The gameplay was top tier and very life changing. This is one of the greatest work from a ROMHACK I have ever played especially on real final. I am crying. This has made me go through an emotional rollercoaster. I cried, played Subway Surfers, and also watched a movie while watching this premiere. This has made me go through so much. I passed depression because of this. It really inspired me to become an outstanding young man. Thank you.

This hack is dumb. I really didn't enjoy it.

I don't even know why this was even accepted. Breaks many of the submission rules on this site.

While IMO it's only worth one play and some of the earlier levels I played were a drag, most of the jokes in this hack are absolutely delightful and the platforming was mostly easy to figure out with a couple exceptions (which I think were pretty much my fault, given that one of them is explained in another level and I didn't notice, and the others were in line with the rest of the gimmicks of their level). There was also a weird glitch in
the cape level in the final area
where the level randomly got rid of the checkpoints sometimes but this didn't detract much and it might have fixed in this version (I played on 1.1.0). Did 49/50 exits (
not bothering with the block duplication though
). Overall, I'm very glad I played it blind. 5/5

meant to be an alternate intended way of beating that level? I'm asking because this update seems to have missed that one particular level.

Recolor of Mario said it was an alternate way of beating the stage. It is cheese but he liked it too much to remove it.

You know, I may an idiot because I thought the cheese was
a midair yump to get the mushroom
and that's what I ended up doing before noticing the way easier cheese.

One of the best joke hack ever made.
Each level is memorable and unique, every level is fun (or at least passable).
Except the shell cannon room in real final, it was just painful
.
Even the overworld is remarkable!
Overall the difficulty is really hard (but easier than YUMP 2).

Played on v1.1.0

Fun police coming out yet again. It turns out a hack is allowed to have glitchy graphics as long as it is well designed and has a good reason. I'm sure you are really fun at parties too.

This one gave me a bit of work to complete, but was worth it. I love how this hack does not take it seriously every second. The parodies and references made me laugh a lot and the final boss was really clever. I went full 50 exits. While there's tons of very hard levels, I always was chill most of the time, because of how absurd and funny they were. Great job with this collab, Daizo. #smrpg{y}

What can I say about R-ACK... well, lemme start with this.

This is one of my favorite hacks that ive played. Everything from the levels to the simple random jokes I absolutely loved. I recommend this hack to anybody who enjoyed hacks like Yump and Jump. Be warned that it does get a little kaizoey at the end, but its very brief and those levels are not even required to beat the hack.

Again, highly recommend this hack. 5/5

As the C3 forum will eventually close, I figured I'd leave my personal hack opinions/review here.

R-ACK is both a love letter and parody of hacks like the YUMPs where anything is game, where level design rules and aesthetics coward in the corners, fearful for their lives. Most levels have a unique gimmick that sets them apart from the last, and no two levels will give you the same experience.

While the YUMPs are the main inspiration for this hack, I found that the difficulty to be slightly easier than those, with only one or two levels skirting the line of kaizo (and even that is personal taste). Don't let this fool you, however, as R-ACK is not a walk in the park either. I found the latter end of the game to have some really brutal levels, though the fun quality of the level design kept me going.

My biggest critique of R-ACK is the lack of infinite lives. While there is a (humorous) life farm, R-ACK opts to forgo infinite lives in spite of the difficulty. I found this frustrating mainly, as I had to constantly go back for lives whenever I was struggling on a tough level. The gag payoff for the life farm I feel honestly was not worth the removal of infinite lives, but I respect the decision.

R-ACK also bucks the trend by having all it's contributor use pseudonyms, much like YUMP 2. However, the actual creator identities are never revealed, which I think is honestly a nice change of pace. In a world where ire can be pointed directly at a level creator on Twitch Stream and YouTube comments, R-ACK solves this simply through merely holding the true creators anonymous. This is something I wish more hacks did, and I think it's a really simple solution to a problem I've started to see more and more.

On the subject of level creator though, I would really like to extend my adoration for "fainéant" and "flamboyant aardvark", both of whom made some of my favorite levels for this hack. Both really elevated this hack to a new level, and I hope to see more from both of you in the future.

Ultimately, I really enjoyed R-ACK. If you're someone who enjoys good level design mixed with really creative humor and jokes, R-ACK is a real spectacle to play. Just be sure to get ready for a real challenge!

5/5
