Super Mario World Hacks → Tebeo

Submission Details

Name: Tebeo

Version History: View
Demo: No

Length: 24 exit(s)
Type: Kaizo: Intermediate
Description: Tebeo is my first ever SMW hack. I themed every level in it around comic books I like (Tebeo means comic in spanish).

The difficulty of this hack scales up a bit at the end of the game, and also at the last level of each overworld. Overall I would say is easy/medium Kaizo difficulty.

All the mechanics and sprites are vanilla and almost all the graphics, except some stuff edited on yychr. It has custom palettes and music.

About asm, it has some life quality patches, like instant retry and NoMoreSpriteTileLimits.

I hope you enjoy it and after playing it, go check on some comic books!

UPDATE:
1.1 changes
-Fixed OW events in the second overworld, where a secret exit dot would appear after beating "The killing Joke" and "Maus".
-Minor changes to some of the palettes.
-Minor changes to some obstacles in 3 levels (Hellboy, Akira and Watchmen)

UPDATE:
1.2 changes
Updated credits.

Good hack. Nice obstacle design and short 'n' sweet sections where setups are mostly consistent. Some concepts repeat too much, such as p/slope/cannon speed, but there's still a decent variety overall. Would recommend to intermediate+ players.

Really like this hack. A good challenge but not so tight that it felt silly. Really well done and one I had fun with the whole way through. If you're looking for something similar but without the difficulty try Red Hero's Journey - but eventually make your way back to Tebeo, it is completely worth it IMO.

Just finished playing this hack last week. This hack is very good! Very well designed and has some standalone color palettes.

My only downside is about the stability of some of the setups. I like to do a level until I one cycle it. There is at least 2 levels that cannot be one cycled. The setups won't necessarily align properly. CoWA! and The Metabarons I think are where I noticed this issue.

But other than that, this hack was an amazing experience and is really fun to play through. Can't wait to start posting my playthrough of this game and I can't wait to get the chance of playing Tebeo 2.

Finally got around to playing this, very fast-paced and fun hack full of cool setups. Really unique and interesting palettes, I liked that it did something distinctive with that even when they got a little wild. Not too tough as intermediate fare goes, but lots of regrabs and a few tightly-timed jumps.

Glad to have knocked this one out, I had a good time and will be sure to play the sequel some time in the future.

Wow dude this was great! I played through this on my Anbernic RG-351M (don’t know if there’s anyone else in the world that plays kaizo on handhelds lol) but it was the perfect difficulty to fun ratio for me. Can’t wait to check out Tebeo 2 now!
ZX497 Link
Very fun, lots of cool tricks. The setups are sometimes maybe a tiny bit too specific / tight, but the sections are short enough to make that not matter too much.

Hack ended kind of abruptly, both cause I really didn't think I'd blown through 24 exits already and because there wasn't much build-up to it, the last level is just another level.

Definitely recommended.

So far the hack has been cool. I like most of the design and I think overall you find fresh ways to approach a lot of familiar components we see in hacks.

I am having one particularly frustrating issue, though.
In the mechakoopa switch palace, I am having an additional mechakoopa spawn at the beginning somewhat frequently, and there is something genuinely invisible killing me in the 1 tile water when through the pipe. I can see one bullet, is there supposed to be a second? This is problematic because I am dying without any visual cues to inform me of what is killing me lol.

Otherwise really well done. I personally dig the colors. Feels like the end of a long day on a head full.

Are you pressing up while swimming on the 1 tile of water? All the ceiling after the pipe, is vertical pipes. It's kind of a stupid troll, so I apologize about it.

This is an excellent, excellent hack. The setups were fun and intuitive. The levels were carefully designed and fun to play. Top marks and I recommend this 100%.

Very nice hack, I like design and music choices as well as the game flow 5/5

Truly a delight to play. There were such fun setups. Really well done, nirv <3

Had a great time playing through this. Congrats on the hack and looking forward to more.

Really enjoyed this hack, great levels, nice setups, but (this is 100% personal, not an issue inside the hack), some color palettes heavily melted my brain. Despite of that you did a beautiful work

For the first half of this game I was having a good time, but in the second half I was blown away by some of the creativity. Some really fun, original tricks here that I had a blast with. If I have any complaints I think a few jumps were just a little bit tighter than they needed to be but overall so so good. Highly recommend, especially that second half.

great game i like it #w{=D}

13 exits in and I'm having a blast. I love how plain and simple the levels are. There are no confusing or convoluted parts – it's just pure jump 'n' run goodness with great flow in each level. Incredible job!

100% recommended. Every level flows very well, very creative setups. Keep it up, Nirv!!! Thanks for creating this game :)

This hack is what I would say is a mixture between bun bun and akogare, that being said this hack is very unique in itself.

I really enjoyed this hack but there were a few levels that I could simply just have gone without, but every other level was so enjoyable that I would still recommend this to any beginner player looking to step it up a bit because this does have some tricky stuff

The pallets give the hack a nice identity along with some of its unique vanilla setups, keep up the good work nirv 🆒

wonderful hack. I love watching Dennsen86 running this hack for WR.
Does anyone have the full soundtrack? The soundtrack is really great from the beginning to the end.

Great fun from start to finish. Clever level design with a fair difficulty curve. The palettes really make the levels feel like graphic novels. Great music, especially the end credits #smrpg{cool}

Tebeo is one of my favorite vanilla hacks around in 2020. It's hard to say this because there is a good list of hacks out there. Thank you Nirv for it. Beat it, did the runbacks, started to speedrun it, loved it.

1.1. is great. 1.0 didn't bother me at all in some of the sections that had "issues", very very solid choices of setups, creative colors and each level flows very very well.

I'm looking forward to new Nirv creations :hype_emote: , maybe a leaderboard on SMW central? :)

This is a beautiful hack. It has, coupled with overused setups, some really unique ones at best. Had a lot of fun with it, so accepted!

Also, more as a suggestion, but please do disable getting more than 99 lives in this hack, as the lives counter glitches whenever I get an 1-up mushroom.
jquery861 From older version: Tebeo Link
Loved this romhack. 1.0 was amazing, the 1.1 is also very good. Personally, I liked the pallets more on the 1.0 because of the nature of the hack and the lore, but in general amazing work Nirv! Hope you can create the speedrun leaderboard of this one. :)

Glad you came from the SMM scene and stay here with us SMW :)

haven't started the last 2 levels yet. Just wanted to say how awesome the world before that was. Akira, Watchmen and The Metabarons all had great atmosphere, banging music, thematic design. Nice work man.

Only complaint was a purple shell halfway before the first checkpoint of the Metabarons, it often zoomed over the wall it was supposed to bounce from.

edit: And I finished it GG. I loved this hack. Really glad I stuck with it. the slow mo parts were a funny way to end it :)

A version 1.1 is waiting to be moderated, with a couple of necessary changes.

It's "Spanky's Quest - City" a song I requested here in smwc and perfectly ported by Dippy. Here: https://www.smwcentral.net/?p=section&a=details&id=22090

I'm halfway through now. I really like the colours, though purple is a little dominant. Are the level colours inspired by the comics too?

edit: The colours are getting better the further i get. How were rainbow munchers not a thing yet! This is something I would like to see more often.

Some of the palettes are inspired by the comics, and some don't. Mainly I tried to link it a bit with the overworld, and work from there.

I think screen scrolling is fine. If you find a use for it, or if you break a level is under your responsibility. There are no L/R mechanics implemented so it doesn't actually interfere with the levels.

should disable screen scrolling though

This hack has so many unique setups and good ideas in it, that I couldn't help but have a great time. There are quite a few spawn-dependent sections that I found pretty annoying, and one that I had a HUGE difficulty getting to line up, even after lots of experimentation (the golden Bowser statue in Watchmen section 1). I watch other people get it first try, so there is something about how I play that doesn't line up.

Outside of that I had zero complaints and will be revisiting this one. Great work, Nirv.

Disclaimer: I helped in playtesting this.

Truly a great Vanilla-style hack, somewhere in the difficulty of Akogare. One of the most fun hacks I've played in a while. Aesthetically pleasing and excellent level design.

Well done Nirv!
Tiroler From older version: Tebeo Link
This hack was excellent. I really enjoyed the difficulty curve and the set-ups were intuitive / crisp. There were a few sections that felt somewhat spawn dependent but it was easy to determine how to correct for it. I am glad I played this start to finish. Well done for a first hack.

Thanks buddy, I appreciate the kind words. I'm considering in the future tweaking the palettes to something that makes more sense. I like experimenting a lot and sometimes it goes out of hand.
placeholdertest From older version: Tebeo Link
im not sure why this hack is being overlooked because it has some really amazing stuff. the palettes need work and some of the levels have some spawn jank but overall the setups and themes are interesting and well done. the "underwater" ghost house has the cleanest aesthetic and if the other levels can be altered to that standard this would easily be a top ten hack for me.

edit: the akira level is amazing!
