please respect that.
And if you upload my hack on other sites. Please inform me first.
This hack is simply marvelous, it is the best one I have played so far !
The overworld, very original and cleverly managed, the level design, the music, the bosses, I loved all what you did. Especially musics, which are mostly epic, and level design, with wonderful graphics.
The difficulty is well balanced, starting from very easy to hard to the end. Bosses were quite hard, especially the last ones, but I was able to find all 58 exits and 120 A-Coins without using savestates.
I enjoy your works : the other one I played, Super Mario 2D Land, was quite as good as this one !
10/10 (5 stars) Thank you for all =]
Natsu
Pros: Music is fantastic, graphics are mostly good, backgrounds are pretty, story is decent and doesn't get in the way of platforming, bosses were fun.
Cons: Difficulty has a huge spike in World 4 and the final boss, some graphics and bosses were very out of place, World 0 Level 2's second A-Coin was hard to find, only two feathers, no Yoshi (I saw that addressed, but it's still a bummer).
Despite the cons, the game has an incredible amount of charm to it. The difficulty is for the most part fair except for that lava world. I recommend this hack to anyone who hasn't played one before.
I didn't have all 120 A coins and I was still given acces the final boss and able to compete the game.
There are only 2 feathers in the entire game, in the one level in world 2. Every power-up is a flower apart from that. Consider adding more feathers and lessenging the overall amount of powerups in the game. They are too frequent and make it too easy.
No Yoshi, sadly.
Items did not work the way they did in the proper SMW. Item doesn't drop if you get hit and collecting an item replaces whatever is in reserve, even if you collect a mushroom but have a flower in reserve.
Half-way points in some cases seemed to show up very early in the level. Consider moving them.
Bowser - takes too long to produce a shell for you to hit him with. Any work you have done hitting him to get him close to the edge is undone as he keeps walking towards you so it takes a very long time to finally knock him in to the lava, and when you do, you don't have much/any time left and have to battle him again. Consider shortening the platform he is on to make it a bit quicker to kill him, or have him unable to walk towards you so every hit will count, considering the slow rate he throws shells at you for you to use against him.
GRAPHICS 2*(8.5/10): Nice variety of graphics and scenarios along the game, and most of them were quite nice. The only problem was the "background" bosses which felt really odd.
LEVELS 3*(7.5/10): Most of the levels were not long, but they made good use of the different scenarios. They didn't feel repetitive this time, like they did in your previous game. I also enjoyed quite a lot the secret levels you made, they were the most original ones and it was worth, although I can't say the same for saving the kings. You have to find all the Alex coins to fight the another background boss that is exactly the same as background Bowser to kill the anomalous background skull, and they all fight the same. That felt like you were totally lazy and out of ideas, and it is no way near being worth all the effort of finding the coins. I'm glad I didn't even try to find them. Also, if you had ended the game after the first Bowser, it would have been much better.
BOSSES 1*(5.5/10): The real, actual bosses were nicely made and I appreciate the effort you had on them. However, the background skull is a terrible "prize" for collecting all the coins, and I feel that would completely ruin the fun of someone who had worked for that. Also, using background bosses is a bad idea on its own, it's not fun at all.
OVERWORLD 1*(8/10): I see you kept with the same idea you used in your previous game. I enjoyed the way the overworld music changed while I advanced. I also liked how you put the secret pipes right below the level with the secret exit, that was a nice way of letting the player know where to look without spoiling it too much.
FUN FACTOR 2*(7.5/10): The game is overall quite enjoyable (if you don't try to collect the coins, that is). If you play for the levels, then it is a fun game. If you want to find all the coins, then you are going to disappoint yourself later on. Like I said before, the different and original scenarios made the levels quite enjoyable. Even though you didn't use many different enemies, I noticed how you used some specific ugly monsters in specific levels. That was nice to make the ambients more unique.
FINAL NOTES: I seriously recommend you don't use background bosses anymore. Also, I see you like to "reward" the player for collecting all the alex coins, but, if you really want to do that, you definitely need to think in a more rewarding prize. The way you have been doing is way too disappointing. Also, I liked Yoshi Coins better. Don't take me wrong, it's nothing personal.
OVERALL (7.6/10)
