Holy shit. Some sick wacko opened fire at an elementary school in Connecticut this morning and killed at least 25 people, the majority being students at the school:

A young man clad in black and carrying two handguns shot up an elementary school in a small Connecticut town on Friday, leaving 18 small children and eight adults dead in one the nation’s worst school massacres, law enforcement officials said.

The gunman, described as a 20-year-old man from Connecticut, was later found dead, a federal law enforcement official told NBC News. A second person was in custody for a possible connection to the shooting, NBC’s Pete William reported.

Students – mostly under age 10 -- described the terror that gripped Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown when the rampage began around 9:30 a.m., sparking a massive police response that included SWAT officers going room to room to search for victims.

The Hartford Courant, citing unnamed sources, said many of the victims were in a kindergarten classroom.

"I was in the gym and I heard a loud, like seven loud booms, and the gym teachers told us to go in the corner, so we all huddled," one student told NBC Connecticut. "And I kept hearing these booming noises. And we all … started crying."

"All the gym teachers told us to go into the office where no one could find us," she added. "So then a police officer came in and told us to run outside. So we did and we came in the firehouse and waited for our parents."

Dozens of emergency vehicles from across Fairfield County raced to the 600-student school, along with panicked parents hoping to be reunited with their children.

“It was horrendous,'' Brenda Lebinski, mother of a third-grader, said at the scene.``Everyone was in hysterics -- parents, students. There were kids coming out of the school bloodied. I don't know if they were shot, but they were bloodied,'' she said, according to Reuters.

One parent picking up his young son said the shooting was “the most terrifying moment a parent can imagine.” He described the anguish of waiting to find out if his son was a victim and then running to his child.

“It was the greatest relief in my existence,” the father said. “I’m just happy that my kid’s OK.”

Bracing for a large influx of wounded, Danbury Hospital went on lockdown and cleared four trauma rooms. It received only three patients, including a teacher shot in the foot, the Associated Press reported.

The motive for the shooting was unknown, and the gunman’s name was not released.

Two 9mm handguns were recovered from the scene, an official told WNBC's Jonathan Dienst. The Associated Press said one of the guns was a.223-caliber rifle.

The FBI was on the scene, assisting with the investigation.

R.I.P. to the victims and thoughts and prayers to their families.

This is worse than Columbine!
Absolutely horrible. What possible motive could this sick bastard have to kill all these innocent children? Absolute scum of the Earth.
Please excuse my lack of an avatar or banner. I'm just too damn lazy to create one.

Motive? He didn't need one; he was quite obviously insane.

Mental illness is the perpetrator, here. (and/or whatever drove him to this state)
ugh. my condolences and prayers to the victims and the victims' families, hearing about a school shooting always hits me very hard. good thing the killer is dead, knowing we won't have to hear from that scum again, though i feel that suicide wasn't justified enough. jesus christ this world is rottening to hell.
I believe the current total is 27. Regardless it's horrible that such a thing could happen.

I don't have close to adequate words. Just senseless and tragic.
I'm actually starting to feel uneasy about my own safety. It seems we hardly have time to breathe between these senseless acts of cruel violence.

Looks like it's time to invest in some Kevlar insulation. And thank my lucky stars my school (UCLA) isn't crime-ridden--although this happened in a "safe" community.

This country is going straight to the stink of the ass. Our children's children may not have a civilized nation to call home at this rate.

Science to the rescue!
A moment of silence will be observed in all of this weekend's NFL games:

Quote
The NFL sent a memo asking for each of its teams to observe a moment of silence before this weekend's games.

"This shocking event has brought the nation together in grieving for the victims and their families as well as the survivors," the note read. "We believe it is appropriate and important for us to collectively recognize and participate in the grieving process at our games this weekend, as we have done on other occasions."

This is the first news story to actually make me almost cry. Even Obama was holding back tears. :c

Fun fact: Several media outlets claimed "Ryan Lynza" was the murderer, but he wasn't. It was his 20 year old brother Adam, so Ryan now has to deal with the problems of his brother doing a massive school shooting, I believe many of his loved ones having died, many people thinking he's the murderer and idiots flaming him on facebook.

EA and Bioware also are getting fucked over, because Ryan liked the mass effect facebook page and now idiots are posting comments at that and using it as "evidence" that video games cause violence.

All in all, i'm sure it's been really fun for him.
What the heck is wrong with people these days? Shooting little kids and teachers in an Elementary School for absolutely no reason. Too far even for the shooter in all of this even shot himself to possible avoid apprehension. I'm disgusted by all of this.

How can someone be so heartless to picket the school and "praise" the shooting? #ab{>:}

I swear to God they have to just be trolling at this point. There's no way anyone could be that crazy.
That shooting reminds me of the one that happened here in Brazil in a school, but some children survived and the shooter killed himself. I dunno what is wrong with people those days, it's just insane.

Are you alive or just breathing?
... yeah, if the American government isn't convinced that they should arrest all members of that "church" (seriously, if they think they are serving god by acting like that, they clearly don't know what the hell religion is about), they should be now.

Anyway, as I said on IRC, this was horrible, and my wishes go to the families affected.

My thoughts on the event as a whole:

It's senseless and terrible. That's all there is to it. It was a terrible, senseless act of violence. Probably not the last one we'll see this year, too...

And those insane religious fuckers from the church are only making it worse at this point.
