WIP Thread

@Iceguy: Wow, are really working on this? It looks so awesome and similar to kipernal's tool. I still can believe it.

On a quick note, are you planning to add some support to imamelia's Tessera? Because it could be nice to have a little more variery of sprites, speacially bosses (assuming the tool can make some descent ones) apart of the SMB1 Bowser, SMB3 Lakitu boss and Mouser.

@Bio: Finally a Power Tool which looks easy to use. Nice work with this one. I suposse it does include some powerup sprites in it, right?
If you mean custom sprites that give you power-up:
I got a variation of the ? block wich generate a custom sprite that will give the powerup value equal to the last byte of the map16 it was inserted(ex: if the block is inserted at $402 it will create a custom sprite that will give powerup $02). this way you only need 1 block and 1 sprite to allow acess to all the powerups from $01 to $FF(on a small note, insted of giving powerup $00, it will act like a poison mushroom)

if you mean sprites that will be generated/used by the powerups:
powertool allow each powerup to have a extended sprite defined in the .asm file, this sprite will replace the fireball. nothing prevent the generation of custom sprite by powerup codes by none of the one I made do it
I'll be really happy to see Power Tool completed as well, it pretty much means one thing so many people want is now possible (like Super Mario Bros 3 power ups in Super Mario World) and is one step closer to a multiple character tool system aka Super Mario Bros 2 or Mushroom Kingdom Fusion.

And I'm still excited for the sprite maker thing. It really is the last thing I'm interested in before I can consider SMW Central left forever, since with its release I'll have no more need for anything from the site again (since I'll be able to make simple sprites and blocks, rip/make my own graphics, have more complex ones made on request outside SMW Central and use various other tools for the rest). It also might mean I can make my own versions of some of the enemies from the Brutal Mario sprite pack, saving me the 50-100KBs that carol's versions of things like Mega Man enemies and Yoshi's Island enemies take up.

Since I noticed that even if you can have custom powerup, making a simple and efficient way to acess them is a problem, so I made those:

those are made with only one custom sprite and one custom block, the lowest byte of the map16 of the block choose wich powerup will come out, the item itself is configured via powertool (see the item path and the item palette).

they can also go in the item box, the only flaw is that only 3 can be on screen at the same time(excluding the one in the item box), the normal powerups (aka the normal mush/flower/cape) will be modified the use the same system
That looks pretty cool. I imagine this tool will be a heck of a lot easier to use for making custom powerups than any current method, and I can just imagine the possibilities. (No, this isn't the first time I've heard of the tool, but whatever...) That is a good idea doing the sprite and block that way. One thing, though...how will all your ASM hijacks for PowerTool work with health patches? Do you have any plans to implement an optional custom health system?

I'm working on a hack! Check it out here. Progress: 64/95 levels.
I haven't tested with a lot of patch yet so I'm not sure how will it affect them, since the hurt subroutine is mostly unchanged I doubt the impact will be noticable. I'm more worried about the sprite-based status bar with all the change to the item box I did

It's very WIP but I have everything outlined so it's just a matter of finishing it all. Obviously it won't be able very complex sprites, but things like this, this, this and bosses that aren't crap (just to name a few) should be easy enough to make.

Also, I totally didn't copy off Kipernal's tool's layout. D: Hopefully he won't mind...

I think he was just unsure and wanted a confirmation personally (since many people quit cool projects: who does remember that cool Metroid ASM hack made by the now gone ICB which disappeared as smoke?): really, why is this rudeness necessary?

Glad to know the sprite maker is still being worked on. I mean, it's epic sounding enough that myself and a few others have put their projects on hold til its done simply because we know we'll probably end up using it right away.

And custom power ups with just one custom sprite? Damn that sounds epic, I'd love to see the Hammer Suit in more Mario hacks.

i'm awestruck. really looking forward to the spriterector (can it please be called that i swear to god), props to you, iceman! i haven't been that active here but perhaps when the spritecreator is released and everything, well, i can't say!

also with the spritecreator, would this site accept essentially sprites that are made with said tool, or would it be more "hey place this in the file-bin" kind of thing?
That is a complex gfx routine; i doubt it'd be able to do that.

edit: unless you're able to specify positions per tile per frame, in which case it should be able ti.
I'm just hoping it can make 48 x 48 and 64 x 64 sprites, I have some perfect ideas for what sprites I'd make if it can.

Like a better boss for the toy related level and some more powerful enemies for normal levels. Maybe the odd Donkey Kong Country enemy too.

No comments on that? The Frog Suit looks freaking awesome, and seems to work just like in SMB3! That is fantastic!

The Water Mario one is cool too, and it makes me wish it was a real power up in an official game considering how more useful than the Frog Suit it is.

Also, is there any timeframe for that sprite maker thing? Maybe before christmas or new year?
