Super Mario: Buried Treasure

Some of you have seen some screenshots of this WIP hack in the sticky thread up top, but I decided to make a thread for it so here goes.

Okay, well this hack has its own story with cutscenes, etc. so I won't give too much away here. Basically this hack is based on a desert theme, full with secrets, alternative paths, mini games set by bosses (this making the bosses not particually hard, but the games they set rather difficult) and hidden treasure (coin rooms, keys etc.)

Heres a few screenies:

Some of the lower screens are outdated, as you can see mario doesn't have his new clothes :P ..More soon

That looks VERY nice! This is definitely on my list of hacks to DL when it's done.

I have a couple of questions.

How did you get rid of the timer?

and,

What are the two diamonds beside the item box?

I've removed my NoFades patch until I can find the brightness code for Star Road warps.
This hack looks amazing!!!!!!!
Everything looks great, except that the BG clashes with the FG in the pic with the hedgehog. I'm downloading this the day you release it :3
That looks great! I especially like your desert graphics. I just have a question:
How could you use different graphics for Mario in different levels?

InvisibleCoinBlock: Use the status bar editor, press space, then press up until you select the time counter, and press Del.

Thanks, Egg!

Isaac: I didn't even notice the hedgehog! lol! I think that pyramid in the BG needs to be a lighter shade.

Those pictures are before he changed Mario's GFX. I wish it was possible though...

EDIT: Wow, someone figured out I'm Lucas for once 0_o
Looks fantastic! I like that you're using cutscenes, and the title screen (logo in particular) looks awesome. The archeaologist theme is interesting too. Graphics are great as well, and the level design looks like it'll be interesting and fun.

One teensy complaint: I have this opinion of several hacks, but with the title "Sands of the Past", there's no indication it's a Mario game. Maybe Mario: Sands of the Past would work.

The screenshots where Mario is in his normal clothes are outdated; he always has the archaeologist uniform now.

EDIT: Lucas beat me to it. >_>

This hack looks very polished. I have to say, this is a good example of what a hack should look like: creative, unique and refined. Now just work on the difficulty curve, and make sure the levels are fun.

Good job, I hope to play this in the future.

I call being the one to say the "this hack is hot" pun.

This hack is hot.

The little cutscenes you made are nice. I like how you can see the silhouette of the .. uh .. "Anubis" on the first one. The graphics style of the hack in general is also very nice - I assume they are all custom, except for the SMB2 pyramid.

Well done.
Awesome Kc.

But I still prefer the old status bar:
I also prefer the old status bar, KC.

This hack looks incredible, your use of the graphics are great, so do the use of the palettes. Mario's archaelogist clothes are very nice, and the overworld that you've showed in the screenshots and video thread was also unique. Looking forward to play it. ^_^
Wtf? That's one of the best desert-only themed hacks I could ever think of O_o. Well done. The cutscenes are nice, but for some reason, I dislike the last picture.
--------> Don't follow "Find Roy's Dignity", my hack. Because it's pretty outdated. <--------
Looks awesome. So if mario the next indiana jokes?
Your layout has been removed.
Status bar makes a comeback, tweaked a little:

And to answer a few questions:

Are these all my custom GFX?
No, alot are custom and alot are rips/downloaded but customized by me to fit the style, they will be credited still though.

What's with the cutscenes?
These are to obviously add a storyline to the hack to give it more of an edge, and to make sense on why you are doing things, also there are "controllable cutscenes" you may see in the next vid I upload.

Thanks, I totally forgot to add "Mario" to the title.

Just to give a heads up for some of the next screenies I may post, all I'm saying is that something happens and strange things start to happen the further you go.

Is there a tool you used to make the cutscene screens, or is that all ASM?

I believe it's something simpler than that, but putting it together with map16 sounds like a lot of work. <:P

Well there's 2 ways I use for the text:

1. Create an ExGFX file with every letter/number/punctuation and save use it in a level, then make create map16 block words with them letter. (This is probably the best way as you can create any word, but its more time consuming as you have to go back and forth between 8x8 and 16x16 editors)

2. Create an ExGFX file with the speech I want and use it in a level, so there isn't much work once you're in lunar magic, all you have to do is go '180,181,190,191' etc. (Although this limits you to the letters you have in the speech, its a much faster way of doing it.)

I don't know one bit of ASM and I'm getting used to doing it this way, I'm also finding new things out that I can do with map16 only cutscenes and blocktool.

There's another somewhat more convenient way of using letters; Pieguy suggested this to me and I'm using it in RatSI. Make Map16 tiles of every letter and punction and put the tile on left side, then do it again for the right side. Spell out the words by putting the left-side tiles on Layer 1 and the right-side tiles on the same spot on Layer 2, making two letters that touch, and continue for the rest of the sentence.

Someone else thought of doing that? >.< And I thought I was being creative. Ah well.
Yes, it does work very well from what I've tested it with. The only problem is you can't have the text over a normal stage background, it must be on a solid color.
