Mario the Archaeologist (hack released)

Standard

I like grey boos. They are like normal colored boos, but better.
Available for bug-testing/play-testing.

Well, can you at least change the mouth color?
I suck at that stuff. Dont know how to change the mouth, But i like em grey. I agree that the mouth looks wierd thought.
Enable a custom level pallet, and then open up the pallet editor. Find whatever color the mouth is set to, and see if you can change it without changeing the level. If you mess up, uncheck the custom pallet button and discard the changes.

To change Big Boo's mouth, click the palette editor (Rainbow Star) and find the one saying "Sprite Palette" change it until you find the right one. Keep in mind that this will change the colors of other things, so be careful.

Also, there's a clear difference between PALLET and PALETTE.

Pallet:

Palette:

Hope that all helps you.
I suppose that I'm the only one here who customizes the pallet's in his hack then.

Anyways, your hack looks good MATTAN.

Everything looks good, except:

SMW Leaf BG + ExGFX FG= NO.

My god, that BG is so overused with those colors. Find an ExGFX Bg that will work better.

Whatever, it's your hack, do what you want.
Ive changed the pallette for the mouth. Thanks, you´ve teached me how to change the pallette. is there anything more i should change? Anyways, i like the ghost grey.
I think that grey boo is great but not fit in the level :/

maybe that palett for the ghost is good if the big boo was "only one" like a boss

If you take "THE BADDEST HACK I HAVE PLAYED" please say why it sucks ._.'
Add edges to the sand where it touches the blocks, also, use a different BG for that level with NES GFX Please. It would look much better that way.

Hey, MATTAN, you fancy an ExGFX BG? It's just as easy!
All you must do is make sure the blocks are added in Map16 page 0x10 through 0x1F. And make sure the level uses it.

I really don't like NES palettes.
As for the sand... does it really fit in that level? I mean... it's like desert sand O_o.

yeah i know how to do that. Just that the world use custom palette and there´s not many ExGFX bg without custom palette.
Uh... it's very easy, actually.
All blocks and layer 3 use palettes 0 through 7.
Palettes 0 and 1 are special : layer 3 tends to use these palettes, but not all colours. Palettes 0 and 1 are partly used by them, colours 0 up to 7 are always free to edit without affecting layer 3, I wouldn't know about colour 8, but it starts with colour 9.

Palette explaining :

Colour 0 is transparent in all palettes : you're free to edit it, but the result will be none. Correct me if I'm wrong. You will never see it change.

Colour 1 is white on default in every palette, some what more intense than others : sprite palettes seem to be clearer white than block palettes, but of course, this is customizable with a custom palette.
This one is almost as important as colour 2.

Colour 2? Well, colour 2 is plain black, like colour 0, but it is not transparent. Occasionally, some palettes' 3rd colour isn't black, but green, white, gray or greenish blue (palettes 0, 1, 4 and F). Their black outlines are in colour 3.

For all palettes besides 0, 1, 4 and F, colour 3 is the darkest point of the main colour in that palette, on default. That means : palette B 's blue colours start with colour 3 and end with colour 5. Even though a lot of colours aren't blue, this palette is called 'Blue Palette', because it's main purpose is giving blue enemies blue colours ; most other palettes don't have blue colours compatible with sprites.

Block palettes usually serve two main purposes. Their left sides are totally different from their right sides. Only palettes 5, 6 and 7 are a bit look-a-like.

So, how do you find which palette a block uses, so that it is customizable? Well, open the 8x8 editor, and go to the tiles you want to see. Yeah...now what?
Scroll through the palettes with the buttons Pal. Up and Pal. Down. If the block looks like the block it looks like at this moment, remember the palette (you see it at the bottom of the 8x8 tile editor (rendered with palette 0x?)), compare the colours in the palette editor and edit them. Look up the 8x8 tile editor... do they change? Good, you've found the colours.
Sprites can be looked through when you press CTRL+Shift+PageDown. This is handy if you have custom sprite GFX.
If you do this, ExAnimation tiles will also be unlocked, but, unless you know about ExAnimation already, that's something for later. You should first master the BG ExGFX and palettes.

So, blocks use palettes 0 through 7, as for which palettes sprites use, check here.

The level arrangement in that picture seems alright - I'm just happy that the koopa is one that stays on ledges, since a lot of people try to be cheap and would've made it a green or yellow koopa that will fall on you immediately when you try to climb the vine. This part is more about climbing to the top of the vine, and knowing when to jump off so that you won't run into the koopa, so that's good. That background looks pretty good with that foreground.

How to get a custom BG palette and custom FG palette in the same level: Since you can't have two TPL files in one level, load one in another level, like a test level you haven't edited. Copy the colors you want (start with the last one and copy it 16 times, then the 15th color and copy it 15 times, just don't worry about the first color because that will always be transparency at runtime) and re-enter the level you wanted those colors in, and paste the colors to a palette row in the same spots - they don't have to be on the same palette, especially if it's 0 or 1 because of the status bar, but they should be on the same row as each other. Most people, including myself, use palette 3 for backgrounds. If you're moving a palette to a new row, then you'll have to manually go through the Map16 data of the tiles you're changing the palette of, and change which palette they use (e.g. when you load a background and it says it uses palette 1, click one tile at a time and change the palette from 1 to 3, right-click in the same spot, and when you're done, press F9.)

Also, TPLs can be used as a starting point for getting the exact colors you want - you don't need to use the exact same colors in the TPL just because it's a game rip or just because that's the colors the author used. Just open the palette editor and tweak them so they look a bit less irritating, but you should also have the 8x8 tile editor open so you can scroll through the palettes and match them up with what you see ingame so you don't accidentally overwrite a color you don't mean to. If just one thing, focus on changing the orange sand to a more natural brown. The bright green could also be made less intense.

I think my last post (second page) was completely ignored. I did give you some advice for the underwater dark level's palette back there, and it may be helpful.

Just look above you...
If it's something that can be stopped, then just try to stop it!
for all you who did´nt like the sand like fg, i´ve changed it! I allso made the bg in that underwater ghost lvl darker update: made the bg moore green.
Ah, the sand looks much better now. About the underwater background color, though, I think that because of the way it's structured, you'll want to start with the main part being pretty close to the main BG color while keeping the light parts lighter than the darker parts, if that makes sense. So, you'll want it to be a very dark green, and the lightest part should be a medium green. :) The way it is right now, it still stands out a bit too much as a background.

Edit for below - Ok. Usually what appears in Lunar Magic is more or less the same as what's seen ingame for FG, BG, and sprite stuff, not counting the little Mario dude at the entrances.

ok, medium green. And just so you know, that is´nt gameplay footage, it´s from lunar magic.
