ROM Hacking Utilities

This is second take at this thread. Hopefully, it will be more up-to-date. I've updated the links and added a lot of new tools (some were just random searches on Google, some were took from the old thread). If you have any suggestions, feel free to mention them.

Nintendo Entertainment System (NES)

Nintendo GameBoy (GB)

Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES)

Sega Genesis (GEN)

Nintendo 64 (N64)

Gameboy Advance (GBA)

Nintendo Gamecube

  • Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures: EFSAdvent

Nintendo DS (NDS)

Nintendo Wii (Wii)

Note that those tools weren't tested, so they might not work. Reuben needs certain ROM with everything moved around to work correctly, and it's not part of the editor - normal SMB3 ROM doesn't work. The IPS of it would include whole game (except for levels). Just use Google to search it because SMWC doesn't allow ROMs... Too bad...
I have DKEdit:

Pretty sure that's it. :D

Thanks. I was trying to search it, but all I had found were 404 errors. Probably I wasn't searching deep enough.
Nice, but you've forget MKWii. You can hack it with SZS Modifier and CTool.

Youtube channels: XolifreX, TheOlifreStar96.

Now that's interesting... You can hack Mario Kart Wii. That's... something new.

All I would see is "No Blue Shells" modification, but obviously some might want to make new tracks for this game. Added. Thanks for link.

As for "forget". No, I haven't (it's impossible to forget about something you have never heard of) - there are a lot of editors for various games - it's impossible to know every single one. I just wanted to make nice collection of editors in which you can do more than just edit the first level. In case of CTools, I haven't found it on Google (aside of one small Mario Kart Wii hacking oriented site). Of course, feel free to propose any changes to this list - I'm happy to change it.
Let me add something to the list...
2px
Rockman2 editor

This works for both rockman 2 and megaman 2.
I'll help out once I can get to a proper computor (currently posting from my 3DS).

At the moment, you've seem to be missing a few N64 utilitys, (namely the SM64 OBJ importer and some Banjo utilitys). Also SSBB is a well hacked game, you should look up Brawlbox (I think that's what it's called).

I'll make a bigger list as soon as I can.
One problem I noticed with the list The link to the Donkey Kong Country Editor is labelled DKEdit when it should in fact say Donkey Kong Country Resource Editor, or DKCRE for short. It is a different editor from DKEdit. (DKCRE is also the better one, in my opinion)

Really? I haven't noticed. lmsmi1 told me it's DKEdit (I had placeholder link to it then). If you have DKEdit (I've tried finding it, but I couldn't find it), feel free to upload it there (because somebody might find DKEdit easier even if it's Japanese tool...).

Updated.

I'm not sure about "SM64 OBJ importer". Is it "Mario 64 Level Importer" linked before or something else. I'm not SM64 hacker and quick search on Google gave me nothing. But I can understand it's popular SM64 hacking tool.

As for "Banjo utilities", I would like to know details. I've inserted some random vehicle editor, but that's all I've found.

As for Brawlbox - added. Thanks!

(Upload File - Usage: 19.89 MiB of 20.00 MiB (99.44 %)... I really waste the space)

Here's a Banjo Kazooie text editor, there is also a full blown level editor in the works.

Sorry I meant "Mario 64 Level Importer" for SM64, there is also a Music editor available for the game.

There's a released Mario Kart DS Course Modifier.

I also found some Pokemon Black and White tools when I was searching around Youtube the other day.

Also, I was wondering if this thread could also be useful for linking trusted community's that are dedicated to hacking particular games as well as the utilities, like this place or http://nsmbhd.net/).
Advance Map 1.95

A far better overworld editor for Pokémon than EliteMap.
SMWC's official dentist since 2011.

YouTube - Threads - Bluesky
Alternate NOSE (EA NHL series, Genesis versions) link: http://www.romhacking.net/utilities/290/

Epic Edit (Super Mario Kart): http://stifu.free.fr/en/mystuff-epicedit.php

Tools for the GB/GBC Pokemon games: http://hax.iimarck.us/forum/6/

Fuzee (F-Zero): http://www.romhacking.net/utilities/590/

F-Zero Climax Course Editor: http://www.romhacking.net/utilities/414/

Also, here's the official link for AdvanceMap (as LU-HO doesn't want it uploaded anywhere else): http://ampage.no-ip.info/index.php?seite=home (it's down ATM, though)
I have inserted links to some specific-game hacking communities (if you want to add some which I haven't mentioned, feel free to tell me). I also have added mentioned tools with the exception for AdvanceMap (the official link is down and original author doesn't want it to be elsewhere else). I don't think I should add it anyways :). If you really want to use AdvanceMap (it's good editor BTW), find it somewhere. I think it's even mentioned in this thread, but I will not direct to it.

As always, feel free to propose tools which I haven't mentioned. I want to make this list as complete as possible.
You could add EFSAdvent to the list. It's an editor for the GameCube Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures. Also, Super Mario Bros. Relocaverburator which is for Super Mario Bros Deluxe for GBC. They're both kinda sub-par editors, but at least they work.
What about Mario Builder? There are limitations of course, but it's a neat tool overall.

Mario Builder is not ROM Hacking utility. It's tool in Game Maker which allows you to create levels and play created levels. As there is no any actual game Mario game involved in it, it doesn't belong to this list.

Unless I'm not thinking of this Mario Builder...
DreamTool is an open source level editor for Kirby's Adventure (NES) hacking, written in C++. The binary is in Japanese, though, and as far as I know, nobody has successfully translated and recompiled it. (For other OS people: I only opened it in WINE to see if it at least starts, and it does.. but I haven't tried anything beyond that. It requires windows.h so you can't compile it to run natively as-is.)

There's stuff for other games too like Megaman X3 but I haven't checked it out.

Just look above you...
If it's something that can be stopped, then just try to stop it!
you have the same avatar as me!
NSMB editor link is broken. :(
