Introduction

Hello guys. I think it's been about a month since I released Super Mario World - The After Years so I think it's safe to finally make a thread for the sequel to it, though it's currently not released on this site. Right now I happened to be working on a update for it so when that's finished, I'll resubmit it. Anyways the sequel is just called "Super Mute World" because now you know what happened years after the Mushroom Kingdom. (If you don't, play Episode 1 or watch a play through to find out though you won't find many at the moment.) Anyways this hack has actually been in progress before the release of The After Years, around the time I was waiting for the player graphics to be completed and I'm still kind of in the early stages but not to early as I have good progress done so far. Anyways now to explain some of my plans for the hack.

Plans for this hack.

1. This hack will have around 70 - 80 levels...pretty much similar to the after years. (This is just an estimate I should mention.)

2. The hack won't have the usual 8 Worlds but will have more instead. (Keep reading). There will be about 18-20 worlds, 4 main levels per World and a boss being at the end of each one. Quite a few of them are actually optional as you can beat the game without going to some of them, while others are mandatory. Just something a little different I thought I'd try out.

3. The levels will be pretty nonlinear compare to the levels in SMW: The After years. This hack you will have the freedom to explore in levels though some levels might be more straight forward compare to others. I was a victim of forgetting to add bonus areas so I really want to include that in this hack.

4. The Super Metriod Health Patch will continue to be used as I don't know of any other patch that allows you to stay big. The enemies take 20 HP by default but later enemies will start to take more and certain enemies will just take more by default. (mainly the slower enemies or big enemies.) Now don't be alarm as you'll also have the chance to find reserve tanks so it'll balance everything out.

5. After playing Mario Gives Up 2, I was kind of influenced to make my Overworld not so straight forward as I liked how the hack's level paths were. Now course it isn't going to be a complete rip off or anything. Just you'll have a bit more traveling freedom. At the beginning of the game you'll be given the option to start at World 1 or World 2. It won't be too complicated though, I just want the player to put a little effort into finding where they have to go. (There will be good hints and clues though so no worries.)

6.Last but not least, there be will be a bit more to the gameplay of the hack. The first addition will involve collecting keys. Don't worry, this gimmick is item babysitting free. In some levels, the Yoshi coins have been replaced with red keys. In these levels, there will involve a door or doors with a specific number on it (1 ~ 4) and those would be how many keys you'd have to collect to go pass that door. The level video below is a good example of what I mean.

Gimmick Example

Of course there will be different ways to get keys in certain levels.

As for the second addition to the hack, Yoshi is availbe in this hack. However, he's not really handed out freely sadly. He'll mainly appear in levels where you'll need him to proceed or make life easier. I guess you can kind of think of Yoshi as a vehicle or something.

Screenshots & Videos

Ah well enough of the planing stage. Here are some screenshots and level videos of progress I have so far. These are the first 4 world and also the 1 star difficulty Worlds.

This looks really good.
Every level has his own style.
And your Level design is awsome.
I can't wait for more.

Wow, this is a nice hack so far ^^

1-1:
Interesting tilesetmix. What I don't like to much is the palette of these blue ledges in the second screenshot.

1-3:
It's nice how you keep the style from "The After Years". Anyways, I hope that the full hack won't be a After-Years-Clone, if you know what I mean ;)

2-1:
Nice level, I especially like the enemy-placement.

2-2:
Good as always, but the background-palette is a bit to bright in my opinion.

3-1:
I know you drew special tiles, but the combination clouds+pipes still looks odd, if you ask me.

3-4,4-2: nothing to say

4-4:
This is my favourite level of these few. It has an amazing style.
Keep up the good work :D
I've always been following this hack even before this thread started, I have to say you still bring the Mutish Feeling into the game once more which is nice.

I'm glad your using "Area's" instead of worlds, it brings more originality into the game.

Out of all of them, I have to say that Moonlight Tower is my favorite level so far, good job #w{=D}

This looks nice. I like the idea of 18-20 different worlds. It should allow for a diverse amount of themes among the levels.
Mario's Vanilla Journey

Progress: 22/72 levels complete
@SMW King 2000: Thank you for the kind comments. Yeah I try and give each level their unique feel or something that stands out. It's hard work but I try. =D

@mrdeppelman: For level 3-1, I didn't draw anything, that's how they look by default actually. Also haha I'm actually not quite sure what you mean by SMW: The After Years style. Thanks a lot for the feedback also.

@Daizo: Thanks for the comments. What is a hack without Mute there XD?
Also surprised and glad you like Moonlight Tower the best. I put quite a bit of effort into that level and still wasn't quite sure if it turned out good. Guess it turned out a bit better then I thought.

@akacesfan: Thank you. Yeah that's part of the reason why I wanted to do multiple worlds. I didn't want to limit myself to only 8 world themes (Though that's still a good amount.) Just wanted to try something a bit different I suppose.

Well guys, I managed to finish another level just yesterday. This level I've spent at least a week trying to finish. (Of course not all my week was spent into working on the level.) Anyways now we're moving on to showing the two star difficulty worlds, which is about a Normal difficulty. The first and only mandatory area within the two star worlds is Area 5, which is a desert/industrial theme. The first two levels have some industrial parts to them as the other two levels don't. Anyways time to show some screenshots and even a video this time. Let's explain the level a bit.

Area 5-2: "Metallic Station" (Video)

In this level I actually use a tile set that I ripped myself. It's the Megaman X 2 Intro stage. While I ripped the desert part of the FG too, I'm currently just using the industrial part at the moment for this level. (You can find this rip in the graphics section.) Anyways this level has three parts to it. The first part basically involves some line guided parts. At some point in this part, the diagonal bullet bills begin to appear until you enter the second part.

Now we get to the upper level of the Metallic Station as you can probably tell since there isn't anything covering the top. This part is pretty simple as it mainly involves the parachute bomb bomb generator. I tried to design this part around them as I'd like there to be a few tricky spots they can land on and try and screw you over.

Ah now we're back to the lower levels and to the last part of the level. It's somewhat similar to the first part of the level expect it involves some longer line guided segments. It also involves even more bullet bills but no generators. Trust me when I say it's not as bland as it looks, just the screen shots I took. (You can see how it actually plays in the video.)

The level defiantly has somewhat of a purpose to it. Basically Mute needs to go pass the Metallic Station but of course this army's not having it. They basically set everything up to stop you in your tracks: The Surrounding Bullet Bills & Bullet Bills in general and the Parachute Bomb Bombs. I wanted to make the level seem like they're trying to stop Mute in his tracks. While these type of levels seem like they can be pretty difficult, this one's actually not that bad as long as your careful and don't rush yourself too much. Also don't worry about the midpoint as I haven't set one yet. Of course I do plan to set one.

Anyways comments and feedback is always appreciated here. More progress to come soon defiantly.

I did give some constructive criticism on that level, I'm actually pleased with how it is right now :)

That's a nice hack so far. I think you must use the piranha plant fix patch because its stem is red right now.
Windowless ride, feeling alive
Are you alive or just breathing?
Another one? Great! I like the looks of it so far, except I have a couple of nitpicks.

(1-1)- The stone looks a little too dark to me, maybe lighten it up a bit?

(2-2)- The dirt here seems a bit dark, just a tad lighter would look good.

Other than that it looks fantastic man. I am off to watch Forest Gump =D

@miguel21450: Thank you and I currently don't have it applied at the moment. (I forgot for some reason.)

@camoslash: Ah I see, I'll fix some of those suggestions up and thank you btw. Is life really like a box of chocolate? XD

Thank you for the positive comments everybody. I appreciate them. Well it's been a week so I figured it's time to update again. Don't want to get in the habit of updating every month or so like I did with The After Years. Anyways the level I'm currently working on is not of Area 5 but a level after that. Anyways I'll show what I have so far of the level as it's still incomplete.

Please ignore the following things.

1. Grunt walking graphics: I thought I had included all of his tiles but apparently I forgot some.

2. The Hotheads (Or whatever they're called) happen to be going the incorrect way at the current moment.

Anyways now to explain the level some. This level is a Water City in case you couldn't tell. I won't explain Mute's reasons for coming here just yet but I will soon enough. These screenshots currently happened to be the first part of the level which starts outside while the rest of the level takes place inside. This part doesn't involve much put some swimming streams here and there, even upwards swimming. Admittedly, it took about a few hours to set just this part of the level alone, and that was because I've actually changed the palettes of both the FG and the BG from it's default palette and order to give the level a water city feel. It may take quite awhile to finish this level as it's a pretty big (I don't mean long but it might be somewhat.) and not straight forward level In terms of designing, at least what I got planned. As for where this level comes in, this level isn't in any of the worlds but more like it's own level. You'll get to access this level after completing Area 5 (Which is the mandatory.) It's basically here to let you know you're 1/4 of a way through the game. (There will be about 2 or 3 other levels that stand alone without being apart of a World.)

Well that's it for now. I plan on showing a video of the full level once it's complete, as I'm actually looking forward to showing it off.
Comments and feedback in such are always welcome and appreciated.

Nice work, you managed to give it a water feel, but not underwater. Pretty interesting.
What I'm wondering about is the overworld you are going to insert. When you have so many worlds, you're going to get a problem with the palettes, if you don't want to spam the submaps. Just remembering you, maybe you forgot it ^^
But, nevertheless, very nice work. Keep it up!
I really like the style of the levels, I'm happy you're making a sequel to the SMW:TAF. :) I enjoyed reading about the unlinear overworld. :P

Well actually, I thought of how the overworld would look and play out before I started the hack as I wanted to make sure some of them could fit someway. I made the mistake of making Worlds before thinking how they'd fit on the overworld on The After Years. I thought it out some this time around a bit but of course, there might have to be a few compromises here and there. Well anyways, thank you for the feedback. Glad I was able to give that feeling.

Why thank you =D. I at least wanted to make a few more hacks haha. (This series will be about 4 episodes long.) Also glad you find the nonlinear overworld interesting. Now it's all a matter of being able to pull it off. (Which I'm sure I can, with good enough effort.)

Well guys, thanks for the positive comments. I shall have more to show soon. (The level is taking a bit longer then I thought it would.)

Thanks alot Daizo.

Well guys, I managed to finally finish the Water City level as it took quite while; well actually finished it about week ago, just haven't gotten around to updating the thread. I'll be showing a full level video of the level along with screen shoots of the parts you haven't seen yet. It's a pretty big level so there's kind of a lot to it, but being that it's a mid level in all, it's suppose to be that way since it's kind of an important level. So anyways, here are some screenshots and video.

Mid Level 1 - Aqua City

Split Path Room

Just showing off the split path room. You have the option of going left & right or down. Nothing special here.

Room A

This is the room that's to the left and it isn't mandatory. This rooms only necessary if you want to collect all the Yoshi coins or get any other kind of rewards.

Room B

Here's the room to the very right. This is one of the main rooms your suppose to go so it's filled with enemies in such. This direction will lead to Yoshi. (Which is required to proceed through the level.) Giant Snifits make their first appearance in the level but only in this room.

Room C

Here's the bottom room. Though it's a dark area, it's still guarded. This is the room you're required to go in, in order to complete the level. You can only reach here by finding Yoshi somewhere in the level. Also quite a short area.

Here's the final area of the level which is a vertical part. This part consists of quite a few swimming parts but none are really slow pace. Actually quite glad most of the enemies used here work well with the vertical mode.

Well anyways, that concludes this level. It took quite a bit effort to finish but in the end it turned out well, or at least I'm satisfied with it. The FG tileset I ripped for this level was somewhat hard to work with but I managed. Anyways Comments and feedback in such are always welcome and appreciated.

More to show soon.

I've actually seen the video and I love the level! Nice job EvilGuy!

Thank you Daizo. Well since not updating I've managed to finish about 2 and a half levels. Now that we've seen the mid level, we're now trailing back to Area 5 which is Desert theme'd. We'll cover Area 5-3 first. This level is a desert with a little bit of a twist. The more light hearted part of the desert is actually just an illusion and the dead part of the desert is how is actually looks like now. Defiantly stuff going on here...

Anyways I'll show screen shots and a video.

Area 5-3: Lost Desert

The light part of the desert.

And now the dark part of the desert. The second section of this level is where the level begins transitioning from Normal to Dead and the third section of the level is just completely dead. I wanted to make it seem like you're getting closer to something not very pleasant. Though these screen shots were taken in no order, just showing off parts of the level from both sides.

Well that's that level, now on to Area 5-4. This level is of course the boss level and it's a Desert Temple. However, it's not finished yet as I've only got the first part done. I'm still trying to figure out the direction I want to take this level in. I kind of trying to think out a puzzle for the level still. Anyways, this is where Mute finds out who's behind all this desert trickery.

This is just the first section of the level as I haven't finished anything else yet. Well anyways that's all I have to show for now. I shall have more to show soon as I've been on a role lately with finishing levels fast. (I think I'm back to my usual speed of finishing levels.) Comments and feedback are always welcome and appreciated.
