Vanilla Twist! | World 6 stuff! (Back on track)

Standard

Yay, one thousand posts! I've been waiting for this for ages! *explodes*

Okay, jokes apart. For some time ago, I was working an lots, really lots of hacks. I just realised that this wasn't taking me to anywhere, and after some attempts, I finally started a SERIOUS project. I ended up naming it "Vanilla Twist" (a while later I put an exclamation mark in the end).

The plot:

Toadstool was pretty much missing, so Mario and Yoshi went on a quest for her. Tired of traveling too much, they decided to take a rest in an island... They found that the island was pretty much next to a giant continent. Could the princess be there? Exploration starts!

Screenshoots (some random ones which have been put here just so I could open this thread):

I'm sorry but the site I had them hosted on died lol, so feel free to browse around further posts for pics. I should eventually put some new ones in here.

List of released versions:

Demo v1.0 (C3 2013 release)
Demo v1.1
Demo v2.0
Demo v3.0 (testers-only version)
Demo v3.1
Demo v3.5 (C3 2014 release)

I might make or request a new userbar to replace the old one sometime...

Nice to see some progress on your hack yay :)
Overall, this hack has some great potential, and I like the bg pallete for screens 3-6. However, you might want to consider these minor fixes:

1. Title screen: For a hack called "SMW: For The Old Times" I suggest a font for the big "SUPER MARIO WORLD" that references to Mario's past, like the classic SMB one. It just feels awkward to have the original big SMW letters. If your don't like big GFX changes, you could rip the japanese SMW letters and use those for a smb3 vibe. This is just a suggestion, no need to follow it.

2. Pipes: The SMW screen-scrolling pipes add horrendous black lines to the edges of the original pipes, which makes them look rectangular. I rarely come across a hack with these pipes without this problem. It would be nice if you could fix this.

3. Some level design issues: In the 4th screen, the player has to navigate chucks across a pit full of munchers, with only a single block to rest on. If this is one of the first levels, this seems unfitting, unless if this hack is based around difficulty, not design. (This is just a little nitpick, you can keep it like this if you want to). I suggest shortening the amount of munchers.

Good job! Keep up the hard work!
I don't have a large footer.
Yay! Thanks for the feedback! :D

Hm... It sounds like a good idea. I think I won't use the actual name and plot though. In case I do, I'll surely use. Thanks for the idea.

:( I made that for avoid cutoffs here and there (kind of lazy, eh). I'll review my levels and I'll see if I can "fix" that. And yes, I have the screen-scrolling pipes in this ROM, I'll probably use them in future levels.

Well, I think it'll be used in world 3 or 4. My inspiration is like this, sometimes I need to create certain kind of level, sometimes I need another. My levels now are all out of order!

Again, thank you. Anyone else needs to comment or anything?

That is looking really nice so far. Lovely level design here, and also I like how this hack is SMW-Styled without being vanilla. I'm LOVING that bride level. Also, I'm guessing that those are the first levels. If I'm right, the Chain Chomp is too hard for the first levels. There's nothing too wrong with them, but I would not recommend using them, or at least make them easily avoidable. Well, I'm kind of waiting for this hack now. Good job on this one!
Your Hack looks Good Austin, it's a Mix of SMW with Enemies of SMB3 and you have a Good Level Desing, i need to See More!
Looks really cool :>
Keep it up.

Cheers! Thanks for all the feedback!

As you can see in my latest post, the chomps level won't be on the first or second world. The chomps plus some munchers made this level too hard...

MORE SCREENS!

And now featuring screens scrooling pipes (I had them inserted in this ROM for a while, then why not?):

This level isn't too much completed yet.

I really like this Vanilla style.
'Cause Vanilla is awesome.
Really nice screens.

Yeah, this is very good Austin, keep it up altough in those last screenshots, it seems a bit empty but overall it's looking good so far.

Good job. :3
Thanks! Wow, this thread is getting more feedback that I expected. :)

Don't worry, I just took screens in water areas. There's not much content to add in there.

I don't like completely vanilla hacks at all (maybe you can use some custom palettes or something like that), but this is a nice thing. Few hacks remind so well the classics.

Nice Work!
Oh God, your Vanilla Desing is Amazing Austin! And have a Fixes in the Pipes, Nice!
Again thanks for the feedback.

I dunno... Just in cases I use themes that original palettes wouldn't fit, like a fall forest. I don't like blatantly edited palettes, if you can understand me.

Felipe, I'm going to check the levels to see if I can fix the pipes without problem.

I'm now working in another kind of level:

Yes, chocolate caves with puzzles. It's just a stub so far. I'm still thinking about how the puzzle will work.

That's Good Too. A Puzzle Cave. But I think we should use more Slopes. Good Job.

No, trust me, this level will look really better without slopes. Thanks for the reply anyway.

Also I got to work in another random level which WILL be the first, because I finally am starting to create some kind of OW and plan the levels order. New screenshoots soon. :P

I like the look of this. I don't see pure vanilla hacks out there, so it's quite interesting to see one around.

I do hope the puzzle doesn't contain too much item babysitting though. I guess I will have to see how it turns out. Either way, it's looking good so far. :)
I have to say that I really like this hack so far. As a suggestion for a puzzle in the cave, why don't you use Mega Mole or something like that? You can make creative uses for it, as long as it don't turn out kaizoish. Can't wait to see what's more in this hack!
Windowless ride, feeling alive
Are you alive or just breathing?
Thanks!

Well, you know, it's not pure vanilla at all, or it depends on the point of vision. I gonna use custom sprites and perhaps some minor graphical changes. But the vanilla feeling should be kept. ;)

I was really thinking in use these bro... lol

But alright, it's a nice idea, I gonna use munchers and switch blocks here and there. I'm expecting much of my creativity on this level.

I hate creating OWs in most of time. But sometimes, music can inspirate me. I was listening some Gotye when I placed a tile here, other there, and the first world OW map is almost done! Yes, it still needs some improvement. I'd like to hear the oppinion of yours.

Heya, here ya go:

Btw, no, it's not a submap, it's a part of the main OW cutted out.

It looks fantastic! Keep it up :D
