24h SMW II: Discussion

The rules didn't say anything about your entry having to feel like an SMW title screen. In fact, it said you could make it as chocolate as you wanted.

What's the problem?

Also, keep in mind that I'm not really judging music or graphics. [...] I'm really more or less looking for how well you're able to handle the level itself though.

With this in mind, S.N.N. should try to look at Jimmy's level beyond the Megaman graphics and see the Mario level in it, and judge it as if it had the same Mario clothes as any other entry.

Well, what I liked about the first 24-hour contest was that it was anyone's game- I mean, the top entries didn't really do anything fancy but merely feasibly fit into Bowser's Castle. With this contest, though, part of me feels like more "fancy" and "time-consuming" things will end up being more impressive/highly-ranked, and Jimmy's entry is the epitome of that worry for me.

That said, clearly Jimmy put a lot of effort into it, and I'm not going to whine if he gets a top ranking. It's just that I see this contest series as a low-time-commitment, low-knowledge-prerequisite thing, so seeing a theme that ostensibly favors the "fancier" side of the spectrum makes me less interested in participating.

Still, judging from S.N.N.'s post, maybe I'm way off the mark to begin with.

Because every entry is 45 seconds long, then may I ask what would be the progress of the judging?
Also, in Jimmy's level, the first thing that isn't related to the original movement is the fact that Megaman doesn't go forward and jump. Instead he waits and goes back and then the rest of the movement is good. I wonder if some points are going to be deducted for that.
That's because of the entering the level animation.

IIRC, Mario jumps to the right immediately after the recording begins, but this (and all of the moving right before the left jump) occurs during that entering animation, before mario/megaman gets "control".
It's worth noticing that Jimmy also freezes Mario's X-speed at one point via some code (which TECHNICALLY doesn't break the rules, but still alters the movements).

Given the nature of his level overall though, ranking it high will result in anger from contestants, and ranking it low will result in "why is it ranked so low" from people outside of the contest. I've come up with an alternate solution after about 30 minutes of staring at my text file which (I hope) will be fair. I'll reveal all of that along with the results though.

Needless to say, having judged 60-70% of the entries now, his is the only one that feels impossible to compare to the others.
Makes sense, even though that's not noticeable when the character is anyone other than Mario.
Not a single person has said a thing about my entry.

I'm not sure if thats a good or bad thing...
Later.
Does anyone know if there is an SNES emulator that exports to an actual movie format. I'm thinking of compiling all of these and uploading them.
As far as I'm concerned, SNES9x can do just that.
I remebered I just "watched" Dinomar's entry. I actually expected his entry to be better than mine, but didn't happen. That favors me. :)
Same for me. I wonder if it just didn't stood out... Well, creativity kinda lacked on mine, so that's understandable.
So... what did people think of my level?

Eeeeh? Who decided your entry is better than mine? The fact that your entry has many cool visual effects, countless sprite and spirit of automatic kaizo level doesn't mean your level is better than other's ones. I say "others" because i cannot say my entry is the most super mega awesomeeee.

Did you see my entry? If you play it manually, I can certainly guarantee that it DOESN'T EVEN QUALIFY as kaizo. Look at other entries. Very few of them are kaizo, but not mine.

Alright, many people are asking for feedback now, so I'll give it a go (if you want me to tell you what I think about your level, just let me know.)

Starting with ShadowFire: pretty nice entry you got there. The P-switch theme wasn't bad at all, except for it crashing the music, but that's not that much of a problem. There were some very nice parts in the level, full of action, like the part with the ninji, and then there were some waiting moments, for example with the football and the pitchin' Chuck. Overall a pretty good entry here.

Mario's Hat: your entry was okay. I see you tried to let the lineguides interact with the player, and although it felt like they were used as decorations more than as an actual obstacle, I suppose it wasn't that bad. Mario's movement didn't really go all that well with your level, but I can say you've done pretty well, even if the level was a bit empty if we're talking about obstacles.

TRS: a nice little entry here. It was a bit straightforward overall, but I can see some nice ideas there. Mario's movement didn't blend in too amazingly well with the level, but it worked well. Yoshi eating those flying Koopas was a pretty nice idea. Although it feels like you could've done more with the level, I can safely say you've done a good job.

The sound disappearing once you hit the p-switch was a bit distracting, but other than that it was ok. There were a couple times that the pacing felt off, however, most notably before you hit the p-switch and the football near the end have long pauses; other than those the level moved quite nicely and any other pauses were justified with certain obstacles (the one with the volcano lotus comes to mind). The palette looked very nice as well.
What about my entry? I want some feedback as well.
Just finished recording all the entrants. What I'm doing is uploading them without any editing (I'll probably credit them with the Youtube annotations) but once the result's come it, I will edit the video and re-upload them in order and will include any extra information included with them.

Video's rendering and uploading now, will update with the link as soon as.
