Yoshi's Strange Quest (V1.4 in progress)

Link Thread Closed

Standard

Ok, then. The level can be anything you want it to be, as long as it meets the standards I listed in the previous post, and it's theme relates to the world it's in (there's quite a few ideas that can be done with a Fire Mountain theme that are creative. For example, one of the levels I made in World 6 is "Firey Boardwalk", which is exactly what it sounds like (I'll talk about this level later)). Feel free to use any of the resources in V1.2 of YSQ to build your level. Also, if you need to use sublevels for your level, levels 15B-15F are unused in the the copy I'm modifying, so they are safe to edit.
My Hacks:
Mario's Strange Quest V1.6
Yoshi's Strange Quest V1.3 / V1.3.1 Beta 4.6
Mario & Yoshi's Strange Quests (2/10/2023 Build)

Other stuff:
My SMW/SMAS/SMAS+W disassembly
Yoshifanatic's Discord Server: A place for fans of my stuff and/or Yoshi to chat with others.
I haven't ever seen "Frozen" desert name. I'd like to make one level with that theme, with my own GFX, and gimmicks. Can I?

ok sure, I will get to work on that as soon as possible, I'll have a go at changing the pallet so it looks like a reddish mountain, unless you have an idea on what the pallet should look like? I don't really mind. :)

Go right ahead. Just like I told Sowhart, as long as you meet the standards I mentioned, and your level's theme relates to the theme of world 8, the level can be anything you want it to be. To help you out a bit for whatever it is your planning on doing, here's some info about the ROM:

- For new ExGFX files, you can use anything above ExGFX197, since that's the highest number ExGFX file in use in my copy of YSQ.
- For Map16, pg. 22 and 23 are completely unused as well as pg. 4B.
- Ersanio's LevelASM patch is patched to the ROM.
- Most custom blocks in use are on pg. 2 of the Map16 editor (the highest numbered one is 2AB in my copy of YSQ).
- Levels 162-168 are a few more levels in my copy of YSQ that aren't used yet.
- The custom sprite numbers go from 00-2E, C0, D0-D8 in my copy of YSQ. (They probably go from 00-1B, C0, D0-D5 in V1.2)

Ok, then. Also, I don't really have anything in mind for the palette. To help you out a bit, though, here's a couple screenshots showing the palettes of two World 6 levels:

Nice, I kinda imagined the level looking like that. XD lol
I was wondering if I could have a pallet file for that level as I am having a bit of trouble making a nice looking part. :I
The new screens look nice, Yoshifanatic. I always like the feel of fire worlds!
Your layout has been removed.
Hey YoshiFanatic, just to say I did part 3 of YSQ and uploaded it to the channel if you wanted to know.

Also I am making good progress on the level done about 5 or 6 hex screens so I have more to work on and I have noticed that In my opinion that I think my level design has actually gotten much better!
That's a surprise!
Hope my level is ok.
I would gladly play the full game after my demo LP when it is finished!

I saw that part (and the other parts you uploaded since then). You are doing pretty good in your LP.

Yeah, your level is fine. I haven't started on fine tuning it yet, since I haven't been in the mood to work on YSQ lately. I'll get back to working on YSQ soon, though.

Awesome! glad I could help!
YF, I'm still thinking about making that frozen desert.
I'm trying to make some gimmicks.
Make a level, and if I won't finish it just use your one, OK?

Ok, then. I'll be looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

Also, if I understood the third thing you said correctly, I did have a level idea for the level you claimed, but I was unsure if I would actually implement that idea or not. The idea I had was more of a placeholder than anything, since I don't have many level ideas for world 8 yet.

You're welcome.

Also, real quick, I started to tweak the level a bit, and there was something you should know that you may or may not know about. It's not a good idea to build a level using individual map16 tiles, since it wastes too much ROM space. It's not really a problem, since I can easily clean things up a bit so that there are fewer tiles, but I figured I should tell you that.

oh ok, yer I have forgotten a lot about SMW Hacking so.
Also I haven't been here for a while as of what is going on with the whole Chester V System war, though I will be on and off at set times.
Hey, just to say, I have gotten to World 3 and I am on Cookie Crisis, just wanted to ask what song did you use on Castle Crush for the castle part, it reminds me of the t.v program Trapped.
Also I found one of the situation extras, The Yoshi in the Cinema with a case of toilet issues. I was wondering how many are there of those and have I missed any, I want to find all of those cause they made me laugh!
I am loving this romhack and its a shame that TTY Couldn't carry MSQ on for a while because of his controller being broken by his friends puppies.

The song used in the castle portion of Castle Crush is Donkey Kong Country 2 - Krook's March. More specifically, it's a sampled port of that song done by Slash Man. As for the second thing you said, there are 5 of those rooms in the game currently (I plan on having 10 in the final version, but that number may be lower if I don't have enough ideas for them or the patience to write out all the text for them), 2 of which are in levels you have already been to. Also, I'm glad you're enjoying YSQ. :) As for TwoToneYoshi's LP of MSQ, hopefully he will be able to continue that LP soon.

As for updates to YSQ, I ripped some graphics using that tool that Vitor Vilela showed off the other day, and I'm going to use those in one of the levels. Which graphics from what game you say? *zips mouth shut* (However, I will probably make a video showing off the level that uses these graphics sometime in the future). I'm also going to use the updated Yoshi Player patch that Jimmy52905 released yesterday (which I didn't even notice he released until I read the announcements this morning. How did I miss seeing that during C3?#w{x(}. If you are reading this, Jimmy52905, then know that I'm happy that you updated the patch).

Sweet, I will have to use that song if I ever decide to go back to rom-hacking soon. I might do but I have been really busy lately with my group and all, I was going to do Part 8 of YSQ today but thanks to my friend and him leave my group, I feel to depressed to do it today sadly.
Sup, I found something in the latest episode of the LP (which has been moved to my channel) where on Soda Warehouse on the crap boss you can stand right behind the crab and it won't be able to hurt you if you stand still, its shown on the video.

YSQ - Cookies!!!

I already knew about that design oversight, though you probably didn't know that I knew about it. I've made some changes to that room to not only prevent the player from doing that, but also to make the room look more interesting.

This is what that room looks like now. Besides the changes in the room, the battle itself is a little less overwhelming, since the cookies the crab throws can now be destroyed by jumping on them or hitting them with eggs. Also, before anyone mentions it, the egg can't be picked up anymore; instead, the cutscene automatically starts once all sprites (except, of course, Yoshi) are off-screen just like with the previous boss battles.

Alright, I like the new boss room, (pepsi *gargle*) seems very fizzy!
I actually got hungry after doing that last episode, I had some cookies after wards without realizing it!
Hey, guys, sorry about the lack of updates for YSQ lately. I haven't been up to working on YSQ for quite a while. but now I'm up to it. But enough about that, you want to hear about what I've been up to with YSQ, right? Well, I've got two words for you: VWF dialogues. Yep, I'm using that in YSQ like so:

I'm no longer going to use the original game's message boxes in YSQ (or any other hack I'll make after YSQ for that matter), since I'm no longer bound by the limits of the old messages. Not only can I write longer messages, but I can even add features to the text, like having a delay between some parts of the text (for example, in the above picture, all the text in the message doesn't appear all at once. It delays in some parts to make it look more like Yoshi is talking), I can change the placement and size of the message box, I can even add options to the messages, like this:

Since you have to make a choice to advance the text, more often than not, the choice that eventually causes the message to end (rather than looping infinitely) will be the first choice, so that those that don't want to read the text for whatever reason can easily skip through it. In this case, though, either choice will eventually end the message, since the purple Yoshi won't take "no" for an answer and will pretend that you said yes anyway.

Also, I plan on using these messages during the cutscenes where Yoshi acquires an egg (except for the one where
Yoshi gets the fake egg and gets upset about it
, possibly) and maybe during the scenario rooms. I also plan on finishing that tutorial that I said was going to do, since it's a lot less tedious to write it out in a message box rather than placing individual letters on layer 1 and 2. This tutorial can be accessed by hitting the message box that originally just listed some of Yoshi's controls in Yoshi's house.

After a quick explanation of what this message is for, you will be taken to this menu, where you can learn all about Yoshi's cool moves and abilities. This in-game tutorial will be useful to those that didn't read the readme that comes with YSQ, since, after watching various LPs of YSQ, it's pretty obvious that quite a few people don't read the readme to learn about Yoshi's unique controls, considering what some of them tried to do to get past some obstacles (Tongue jumping? Seriously?). Also, like any other message boxes in the game, this tutorial will have some silly text in in to make it a bit more interesting to read.

Also, as a bonus, I'll list some of the messages that I've changed quite a bit in the game (highlight them to see them):

Originally posted by Yoshi, after Giant Chasm is flooded
Yoshi: What the?! Why is the cave suddenly filled with lemonade? Oh well, Yoshi felt thirsty anyway. *gulp* Ewww! Yuck! This is the worst lemonade Yoshi has ever tasted! Bleh! What kind of lemonade is this?!

As you can see, this message has been rewritten from what it was originally. I'd imagine that this is what Yoshi would say/do in this situation.

Originally posted by Yoshi, after reaching the end of Giant Chasm
Yoshi: Yoshi is glad that this is over with! What brand of lemonade was this? It tasted like pee!

This message was also rewritten to go along with the other new message in this level. What Yoshi now says is pretty ironic, since Yoshi has no idea what he actually drank.

Originally posted by the message box in Fattening Plains
If you are a Yoshi, you better be careful (or not. it depends)! In this strange place, all the food here is unusually addictive and fattening to Yoshis. Even touching any of it can cause you to lose your self control. Lose all of it, and you'll doom yourself to a life of fatness, never-ending food cravings, and people wanting to give you hugs. If you are not a Yoshi, then you won't be affected by any of the food.

Both of this level's messages have been merged into one message. Not only that, but I've added some more information that would have made the message too fat to fit in the old message boxes.

Originally posted by the purple switch when it's pressed
By pressing the Purple Switch, you made all the purple dotted line blocks become solid. What were you thinking when you decided to press the switch? You'll never be able to fall through these blocks ever again! Are you proud of yourself now?

What was I thinking when I decided to change this message? I was going to put in layer 3 graphics of the switch block graphics, but they refused to cooperate with me, so I had to take them out and rewrite the message a bit.

As for other updates to YSQ, I don't have much else to say right now.
