Find Roy's Dignity

Just ask some of the music folk to make a mono version of it. It's not like it'd be difficult to pull off :P

Just a small gimmick here, but since I'll be choosing the "stars" option for every level now, I thought: why shouldn't I show this here?
Done with a little bit of levelASM and ExAnimation. Simple as that. It's a pity that the stars don't seem to appear in the correct formation right at level load, but whatever.

e: Yay cities. I may want to mess with the window lights in the background too here. Just for laughs and kicks.

Is that city background custom? It looks quite good, though I think the sides of the buildings (not the front) look sort of strange. I can't really explain why, but it feels like the lighting/shading on them is a bit off.

Thats because the sides show on the right on most buildings, yet one shows a wall on the right side, causing loss of efect of the shading.

Right. Didn't think of that, really.

@S.N.N.: No, the background is not custom. You know I'm pretty bad with graphics myself. ;) I got these graphics from Super Bonk.

Perhaps it's because the windows are not in perspective at the sides. They should slope up slightly, but are instead at the same level as the ones of the front. Making it look a bit weird.

Wrong, if what you are saying would require to have a the left side be a paralelagram, and have an aditional top side also being a paralelagram, wich would call for some redrawing, and would make the efect of the buildings looking smaller/lower than mario.

Because lighting effects are relevant.

Erm...no. I don't think you understand my point at all. The word 'window' gives it away. I didn't mention raising the side as a parallelogram.

So you mean have sloped windows on a rectangular wall?Would look crooked...

Any way, I really like the chanking BG palette/HDMA to simulate a day/night cycle!

^ I think you guys are overanalyzing here.

Also, thanks - but those gradients are far from new, they've been in the hack since at least April 2011. What I wanted to stress on is the ExAnimation for the stars and background window lights here.

I'll ask you guys a question here. Is it a good idea to use these stars for literally every outdoor level that has an open sky in it? In other levels it could be added with Layer 3 clouds too, but unfortunately I cannot add clouds in every level due to the message boxes being on Layer 3 as well.

I'd say no, it would be kind of repetitive when you would add in those stars in every outdoor level. It would also make the effect a little less special, so try and think of something else instead? But an empty sky isn't bad at all either.

Anyway, looking forward to see more of this hack. I do hope that you will actually put some love into the level designing, and not make it a hack completely focussed on ASM, but as far as I can see now you're doing a great job.

Keep it up. {B)

Perhaps, but it would also make the levels feel consistent. Think of it. If I make a level with stars and, suddenly, the level afterwards (which you'll play around the same time in-game, say, at 05:00 in the morning) doesn't have stars... something would feel off there, don't you think? I think this is less so the case with clouds as they can be situated very regional in real life too, but with objects like the moon, sun (which I may add in also, to accompany the gradients) and stars... they're always there, so it makes little sense to get rid of them all of a sudden.

Just my thought here.

Well, when you state it like that, it sure sounds logical indeed. Go for it, I'd say.
I think you should use stars in every level that has open sky. If there are clouds that hide the sky, (i mean, cloudy or rainy weather) well, that's a case you shouldn't add stars... You don't say? *is shot*
Then, you should find the solution yourself, regrading layer 3: we don't really know how the hack is structured.

Well, for the city level, it shouldn't have any stars, as in a city, there would be "light polution" wich would render stars unseen.
On the contrary, a level in a deserted area, there should be stars.
Also, you could add the moon.

Interesting thought there. Though I feel it would be wrong to make the stars not appear at all - however, I could make their brightness/size decrease a lot by only placing (the) small(est) stars in the background.

Yes, I intend on adding a moon and a sun eventually, but I wonder how exactly I'll pull that off. In any case it would have to be done with a sprite, but I'd have to be messing with priorities to get all that right.

This look like a VERY cool hack, Roy-Sama. Is there a download link for it? I would REALLY like to play it! #tb{:D}
Sorry, Roy-Sama is inactive as you can judge by his username.
Also give a better look at the dates of the last post on threads.

Closing this for now.
Considering the author has been inactive for over two years, I don't think we're going to have anything we can play, sadly.
