Yoshi's Strange Quest (V1.4 in progress)

Link Thread Closed

Standard

Thanks for the comments, guys. I really appreciate it. :)

As for updates, I've done a few things to YSQ, since I made the video for Gravity Grove.

- I've converted the font used in the cutscenes and scenario rooms to use the font used in the credits. Now, all cutscenes and scenario rooms use the SMRPG font instead of the NES font.
- I'm currently working on a new intro. Instead of a single screen where Yoshi says his eggs have been stolen again, and that he has to get them back, it will be two cutscenes with a short, playable level in between. Since the level part of the intro is playable, it will be possible to die in the intro. However, I'm going to put a life at the start of the level, so it will be impossible to glitch the lives counter.
- I made a few changes to Soda Warehouse to make it a bit easier. The soda bottle has been slowed down slightly, I'm going to add an extra message giving a tip to make the level easier (hold the R button to scroll the screen so Yoshi is towards the left side of the screen, instead of near the center), I added a midpoint to the part before the boss, and I changed the properties of the boss's projectiles, so that you can break them with jumps or by throwing eggs at them.
- I've started on a few more levels (mostly for World 5). I'm not going to talk about any of them (right now, anyway). I will show what a part of some of them look like:

Forest Access (underwater)

Blackout Mansion (outside)

I think I'm starting to get really good with palettes, since the BG palette of Blackout Mansion, and the level palette for Gravity Grove are my favorite palettes I've created myself. What do you guys think?

Also, since quite a few people have downloaded V1.2 of YSQ, how is it?

Also,

I finished a demo and I'm proud that the ROM didn't crash on me when I'm in Secret House. Also the best part of this hack, I can flutter higher after stomping on the enemy. Well done, yoshifanatic.

I think the reason it crashed before was because it was possible to hit the note blocks twice very quickly by using the old flutter jump. The new flutter jump won't allow for this, so that crash bug was fixed. As for the other thing you said, the ASM works almost exactly like it does in Yoshi's Island, so any strategies and tricks that could be done in Yoshi's Island will work in YSQ (ex. you can flutter jump higher by jumping off most enemies, you can change the color of Yoshi's eggs by licking them after they've been thrown and bounced off a wall, you can restore health by hitting an enemy with a red egg and collecting the stars, etc.). I'm really impressed by how much can be done with this ASM.

I'm already doing that, Corruptendo. I figured that I probably give a bit of a back-story that shows what happened before Yoshi's eggs were stolen, so I decided to make the intro into a cutscene in the same style as the castle cutscenes (the ones that show what Yoshi is thinking). Of course, now that this is the first cutscene in the hack, something that Yoshi thinks in some of the later cutscenes no longer makes sense, so I'll need to change some of the text in the existing cutscenes to avoid this problem.

As for updates in YSQ, I've been focusing, for the most part, on improving the graphics in YSQ. Mostly minor things, like varying the palettes of the cement blocks, making the flagpoles and green coins more consistent with their colors between levels, fixing minor palette problems, and improving the graphics of the health counter. I have made some changes that are more noticeable, though. For example:

- Not Scary House now has a real custom palette, both inside and outside. Before, it was mostly using the original palettes.
- Cookie Crisis and Look-Alike Plains used to use the same palette, but now they look different from each other, since I created a new custom palette for both of them. I really like how the custom palettes for these two levels came out. Check them out:

Cookie Crisis

Look-Alike Plains

- A couple of levels now have new backgrounds (like Chocolate Lake), since making a custom palette for them would have been too difficult.
- The overworld now uses the Redrawn graphics for Layer 2, instead of the original SMW overworld graphics.

That's it for graphical changes.

Also, I'm starting to wonder when YSQ V1.2 will be moderated, since it's been a while since I uploaded it. It would be nice if it was moderated soon, but I'm not going to get impatient about it if it takes a while, since I know the hack moderators are probably busy with other things.

Thanks. While I'm at it, I might as well show a few more level palettes I made for a few levels:

Stone Tower Temple

For that last picture, that's a level I've been working on a bit, called "Stone Tower Temple", which is the World 7 castle. Anyone who knows where I got this idea from will know what the gimmick is, but for those that don't, the main gimmick of this level is that in some spots, you'll be able to "flip" the level upside down. This is used mostly to reach bonuses, but the level needs to be upside down in order to reach the boss door at the end, because...

Yoshi: Darn it!! Yoshi can't reach it!!

... it's upside down and one tile too high off the ground (Coincidentally, the boss door is only a screen below where you start. It figures that you can't enter it right away). You have to flip the stage from the very top of the tower in order to reach the boss door, meaning you will have to climb up from what used to be the top, to reach the boss door that used to be at the bottom. Also, there is an interesting effect I'm using for this level. When Yoshi is inside the tower, you can see what's inside, but when Yoshi is outside of the tower, you can't. This happens almost instantaneously every time Yoshi enters or leaves the tower. Overall, this is going to be an interesting level to design, because I have to build two versions of this stage (one upside down and one right-side up) and there is a lot of potential for breaks and stuck forever situations. I'm sure I'll do fine, though.

As for updates, I have started to get a better idea of how to modify sprites, blocks, and ASM, so I was able to fix a few glitches with certain sprites (ex. the World 2 boss, the soda bottle sprite, and the barrel cannon). Also, I noticed that DarkBones64 started what I think is an LP of YSQ V1.2:

Link

From the looks of it, this looks like it will be an interesting LP of YSQ, even though the LPer couldn't get past the first stage in the video I linked to.

Also, before I forget, there is something I wanted to ask. How do you change what sound bank (from $1DFC to $1DF9) the note block uses for the sound that plays when you jump on it? I can't find the address for that in the ROM map section. I want to change the sound that plays when you jump off one, but the sound I want is in a different sound bank.

As some of you may already know, I've decided to make a sequel to Mario's Strange Quest, called "Yoshi's Strange Quest". Well, I've been working on it, and I feel I made enough progress on it that I can start a thread for it. So, what's the sequel going to be like? It's going to be similar to Mario's Strange Quest in some ways (like the levels will have odd themes or gimmicks), but very different in others. Here are some details on this hack:

- As suggested in the title, you play as Yoshi instead of Mario in this hack. However, it isn't just a graphical change, Yoshi actually possesses his abilities from Yoshi's Island, (thanks to a couple of patches Jimmy52905 made). More specifically, Yoshi can flutter jump, ground pound, make and throw eggs, and stick his tongue out (he can aim it left, right, or up). I'm attempting to build the levels so that they take advantage of these abilities (particularly the flutter jump), but a bunch of glitches are making it difficult to take advantage of some of these abilities (more on this in a bit).

- As for the story, don't expect a storyline that will knock your socks off. I'm not really focusing on the story, but I did think of a way to connect MSQ with YSQ. (I'm going to black out the spoilers. Highlight them if you've beaten MSQ). At the end of MSQ, that scene where Yoshi's eggs hatch was actually the sleeping Yoshi's dream (that's why he didn't show up in that scene). What actually happens is that Yoshi decides to move to another land so he can keep his eggs safe from Bowser before they hatch, but apparently, Bowser insists on taking Yoshi's eggs for the same reason he did in MSQ (He wanted to use them in his birthday cake, instead of going to the store, like a normal person, and buying eggs) , so he follows Yoshi and steals them again. Since Mario isn't around to help, Yoshi decides to rescue his eggs this time.

- As for the levels, I plan on one upping what I did in MSQ. I plan on making the levels less straightforward and longer. The average level in MSQ was about 20 screens, whereas the average level in YSQ is going to be 32 screens. The levels will overall have more secrets hidden in them, as well. Also, there is going to be a lot more weird and silly ideas for the levels this time around (I'm going to try to think up a lot of new ideas, but some of the ideas I thought of in MSQ will also be present, usually with a twist).

- Here are some screenshots I took:

Yoshi: Something doesn't feel right. Yoshi can't figure out what it is, though.

Yoshi! Look out for that dangerous... bowl of soup? and cookies? and milk? Hey! Who is designing these hazards anyway?!

Exploring caves can be tough. Hopefully, you rested and went to the bathroom first before exploring...

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Introducing Lava Cavern 2. It's like a sequel within a sequel.

Anyway, I plan on submitting a demo once I finish 11 levels.... and I get help with some things. Remember when I said there were glitches with the Yoshi Abilities patches? I really need someone to look into those patches and try to fix the glitches with it, since I have no idea how to fix them. I doubt that Jimmy52905 will help me out with this either, since he seems to be deliberately ignoring my PMs. I also need help fixing two songs that don't work properly in HuFlungDu's Addmusic (which are Jurassic Park - "Triceratops Trot" and Super Mario Galaxy - Purple Comet).

So that's that. Let's see how this hack turns out.

Edit: Here's a list of all YSQ LPs for anyone that wants to see this hack being played:

- SMWROMhackperson's LP of V1.0 (5 parts)
- pete6777's LP of V1.1 (incomplete) (currently at 11 parts)
- UltraDragonYoshi's LP of V1.1 (16 parts)

Notes:
- UltraDragonYoshi's LP has no commentary. He might add annotations to it, though.

I wanted to mention that I started an LP not too long ago. I wasn't actually aware that this was a demo, though. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IWuO6mqblHs Here's the first episode in which I fail horribly...
Eh, sure. Why not? Kaizo hacking doesn't seem too ha-aaaaaaand I broke the ROM.

It's alright that you didn't tell me that you started an LP of YSQ V1.2, DarkBones. I usually find out about any LPs of my hacks when I search for them myself, anyway. Also, believe it or not, but I was actually thinking that it would be interesting to see an LP of V1.2 of YSQ only yesterday, so the timing of when you uploaded your LP couldn't have been better. So far, your LP is pretty interesting. Keep up the good work.

Hey, guys, I just noticed that V1.2 of YSQ has passed moderation! Yay! :D. I was starting to wonder when it would be moderated. (Thanks Hadron!)

Now that V1.2 has been accepted, V1.3 will be the final version of YSQ. It's going to take a while before the final version is out, but I'll be working hard on it to make YSQ V1.3 the best it can be. Already, many of the changes I've made so far really improve upon V1.2 (ex. No two levels use the same BG and FG palette anymore and levels that lacked decorations (ex. Castle Crush and Red Yoshi's Mansion) now have more decorations). Let's see how V1.3 will turn out once it's finished...

Can't wait winning Yoshi's race and beating GhostlyGravity Groove.
Hm..., Greatest Hack, and With Redrawn Graphics has combined with Yoshi Player, i'm played the actual version, good level desing and other Graphics!
I've got another update. I noticed that there are not one, not two, but three new LPs of YSQ, which I'm going to link to here (and in the first post of this thread).

First up is thomasstout25's LP of V1.2, which is currently at 8 parts (though there is no part seven as of this writing, since thomasstout25 informed me that that part was corrupted). Currently, this is the YSQ LP to watch if you want to see much of V1.2.

Link

Next, is SMWROMhackperson's LP of V1.2. This is the same person who LPed V1.0, so judging from the first (and currently only video in this LP), he is probably only going to show the stuff that wasn't in V1.0 (or at least what he thinks wasn't in V1.0).

Link

Lastly, there's S1mpleD's LP of V1.2. Right of the bat, his LP is ironic because of something he said in the first part. I have only watched the first part at this time, though, so I don't know much else about this LP.

Link

So with that, there are currently 4 in-progess LPs of YSQ V1.2 (5 if you count pete6777's LP of V1.1, since that version of YSQ is similar to V1.2). I'm really happy that there are that many in-progress LPs of my hack. :) I'll be sure to watch each one (as well as any more that come up).

As for updates to YSQ, I've got a couple.
- I've edited most of the sprite palettes (palette rows 8-D). I want to try and get away from the original palettes, so I decided to change most of the colors in those palette rows.
- Since Thomasstout25 was having trouble beating the Switch Palaces in YSQ, I made a couple of videos showing him how to beat them. If anyone else is having trouble beating the Switch Palaces in YSQ, send me a PM, and I'll give you a link to these videos (they are unlisted, so you need the link to be able to find these videos). I'll make more videos like this, showing the solutions to puzzles in my hacks, if necessary.

Hey, guys, here's another update. I've noticed that another 3 LPs have been started for YSQ.

First up is SparkyArX's LP of V1.2. Like UltraDragonYoshi's LP, this one doesn't have any commentary, but the LPer does use annotations. This LP has only one part currently.

Link

Next up is cstutor89's LP of V1.2. Unlike most of the other LPs I've seen, this person doesn't seem to be using savestates or rewinds while playing YSQ, yet he is doing better than some of the LPer who use savestates (maybe he is doing practice runs before recording?).

Link

LLastly, there is Sketchie00's LP of V1.2. This is another LP that doesn't have commentary, yet unlike the others, I can hear the LPer in the background (usually a quick laugh or a sigh). I'm not sure why he isn't doing any commentary, though. Also, unlike the other LPs, this one seems to be structured to show only one exit at a time per video.

Link

Now, there are 7 in progress LPs of V1.2. I'm really appreciating all the attention this hack is getting. It helps motivate me to keep working on YSQ. :)

(Also, a note to any LPers Lping this hack or MSQ: Even if I don't comment on any of the videos in your LP, you should know that I probably am watching your LP, and I am happy that you decided to LP one of my hacks).

As for updates for YSQ, very little progress has been made lately. I'm mostly taking a break for a while, since I'm not feeling up to working on YSQ. However, I did finish two levels recently (the Emerald Switch and a world 6 level that I'm not going to talk about). Speaking of the Emerald Switch, the puzzle in this level revolves around using Yoshi's abilities to solve the puzzle (like bouncing eggs off walls to hit stuff that you can't reach directly or continuously flutter jumping to hit several ON/OFF switches in a row without touching the ground). The puzzle is fairly difficult if you don't know what Yoshi is capable of doing, so "Only those who mastered the art of Yoshi's moves will reach the Emerald Switch. Are you a big enough Yoshi fan to reach it?" (that's the message in the message box at the start of the level, by the way).

About the Emerald Switch, sounds good to me. If it involves eggs, then the Egg Flower is required.

There's a reason why I didn't do live commentaries on my LP's is because, one, I'm deaf and I don't really talk all that much (well, I can talk a bit, but there's no way to figure out if I said anything properly since I can't hear myself). For some reason the mic is still on but I just left it there as is so you guys would get SOMETHING out of me. I'm told some of my outbursts were pretty funny, so I decided to leave it on. ^^;

The reason why I did videos of individual levels is because that 1), it would make it easier for people to find specific levels if they needed tips or walkthroughs of it, and 2) the recording program I use crashes randomly so if I do a long LP and it crashes, I have to do the entire thing over which is incredibly annoying.

Anyway, I'm flattered someone mentioned my LP of YSQ. :3

However, I am stuck with one level: Mysterious Plain. It's a red dot, so there should be a secret exit SOMEWHERE, but I just haven't found it yet. Any hints? =/

There are egg flowers in the Emerald Switch. Anytime eggs are required to advance, there will always be a way to get infinite eggs somewhere nearby (egg flower, bullet bill shooter, etc.) just in case the player has no eggs.

Usually, when I watch an LP, I hear live commentary, so it's kind of odd when I don't hear any. I don't mind if there is no live commentary, though I'm usually curious about why there is no live commentary when it happens (for example, UltraDragonYoshi told me that he doesn't have a microphone, so that's why his YSQ and MSQ LPs don't have live commentary). I didn't know you were deaf, though.

The first reason you gave was something I actually thought was a good idea when I first saw your LP, since your LP would be helpful to the people who only want to see a specific level being played. I understand the other reason you gave. That would be very annoying.
