MitYH! (New pics, vids and DEMO) :(

Standard

Hai. Welcome to my hack thread.

LINK :(</a href> to the demo.

Call it MitYH for short. Anyway, when this is finished, it will have (one, two, three...) 12 worlds, and something like a star road...ish! You won't have to do all of them though... And, since one day I'll learn custom sprite ASM (honest!), you'll see my own custom sprites and blocks! No music though, can't be bothered adding it. Possibly in the next demo??? Also, I know about the slowdown problems and disappearing sprites. I'll port everything to a new ROM, add music and patches + hex edits. I want this to rival TKO, SMI and TSRP2, one day.

Beta Story - Mario was fishing early in the morning, when he caught a slightly unintelligible message-in-a-bottle. It said

"Mario! Pleas-, you must help us. Bo-s-r discovered our native Hea--land and he and his army invaded. Most Yoshis are now dead, or m-ssing. You are our last hope. You --ve to come. There is a map on the other side."

Always one to lend a hand, Mario swam off for Yoshi Peninsula. He alighted in the afternoon on a rocky shore, and got his bearings.

Now, Mario must retrieve the Yoshi egg tokens to rescue the species from Bowser's clutches. However, Morton, who was in charge of the Yoshi Peninsula Strike force, let slip that Bowser had help from others...

Yes, I know that the story's cliched, but bear with it. It'll get better...

Pictures -

The first submap, it is a mix of themes. Forest, rocky etc. Still needs a bit of work. See any trees?

Rocky Shore. It's a sort of puzzle based level, but nothing will make even a half-wit scratch their head. It is the first level, to be fair.

Same level (Captain Obvious...)

You know how I say I don't like typical grassland levels? This is an exception. Maybe it's:

this!
A part where you're in a mini-universe inside metal boxes!

I've edited the MAP16 to make switch palace blocks do awesome new things. On the left are the unpressed versions, and on the right are pressed.
Green-
Cement block -> Cloud

Yellow-
Blank tile -> Vine

Blue-
Cement block -> Blank tile

Red-
Blank tile-> Turn block w/ flower

Bounce off some koopas and don't kill yourself.

Some more bouncing, this time on much safer note blocks.

Tornado-ing on an Eerie...

Hey, a use for the Random POW block!

Tell me that those boxes don't look too much like wafers... Oh right, this bit swaps the spikes and coins.

plot!

Woah, I'd almost rather do the annoying switch puzzle as seen on the video...

Or maybe not.

At least the annoying part's over now.

A much less annoying forest level. This level is linear to balance out the earlier ones.

It gets harder, what with fish dodging and such.

Beware of dumbasses.

Finally, out of the first world!

And so it ends.

So, ya like? I drew the ExGFX myself, if you're wondering... Also, I'm trying to make the levels as interesting to play as the ones in TSRP1 and 2, so tell me if I've succeeded when the demo comes out.

More to come when I feel like it, i.e. not now. Also, I'd like a spot of constructive critisism of level design and graphics, with a dash of feedback please.
One thing: Tell me where I should add more itemboxes/dragon coins and such. 'Tis only the first world, after all.

I hate to tell you, Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaach, this and not to be very offensive but those graphics.......

Are a hell of a lot better than even Nintendo's. Because of the quality of the original graphics you should've been their graphical designer for SMW. I especially like the details to the BG, the spotted pipes are nice, and the mixture of YI and Zelda elements helps to create a neat combination.

Though I get a little bit bored with the usual SMW music, the level video made the level seem short, sweet, fast and I really like the switch puzzle. The messages are also of proper usage. The only thing I would suggest is to make the first level a little bit edgier. Otherwise kudos to you ::hack cough cough::

I am not a hacker by trade, I am an observer and I can be very observant. I tend to lurk around here to prolong the good experience of playing the original SMW. Whatever can add onto it is something that I will definitely do when I am bored which is often. And I will rarely post and give praise when needed to the hacks that may make me interested to relive memories.

My worst enemy in Mario isn't Bowser but my controller that keeps on getting disconnected from the inside. Might be my memory count.
The graphics look promising, are you going to change all the graphics? For the style you seem to be going towards, the sprites would look better if they were stylized in a similar fashion as the tiles. Keep it up! :)

Thanks! Although, I wasn't really trying to go for a YI or zelda feel...

What switch puzzle? Also, how would I make the first level edgier? It's edgy enough, in my opinion...

I will, good idea!
Swear words in hacks isn't good.

Other than that, nice level design, and AMAZING graphics. I think your graphics are better than your level design by a bit, but since the level design is still quite good, it makes for a purely excellent hack. :)

But yeah, change "damn" to "dang". There's just something about swearing in SMW hacks that's just... not right.
It's me!!

"Dang" sounds a little too goofy/folksy. "Geez" might be a bit more elegant. Or "cripes" if you want to sound more whimsical. I find the idea of Mario saying "cripes" endlessly amusing.

Also, those pipes are pretty crazy.
best. graphics. ever.

also loving the level design. I am more of a kaizo-type fan myself (and do agree it should be more edgy), but your style of level is undenyably awesome. I pretty much play only the insanely hard stuff, but I will be playing this regardless. good work!
I really like the graphics, and the level design is also damn good. But there is one thing, though. That is, that when your high above the ground, like , the bones look like holes.

But yea, I still really like it.
I played this hack a while back,it was nice, but i can't remember the submap to look like that, neither the levels.Did you remade them?

Yep. The old submap was too similar to the original, and the levels sucked. Wait, you liked it? I personally think the old levels sucked.

Your graphics are much better than Nintendo ones, seriously! :)

The level design is good for the first level and the overworld is also okay, I'm really impressed with your backgrounds, they're great, probably the best 16-bit backgrounds that I've even seen. Don't abandon your project and good luck with it! I'll be looking forward the demo. ;)

You might want to reconsider if you want this game enjoyable for as big of a target audience as possible. Swearing in drama (theatre, movies, games, etc) in most cases is added because of one of two reasons, (1) some uncontrollable incident occurred (usually thought of as getting hurt badly) or (2) it is a character trait for that person to swear; though Mario may be in many uncontrollable incidents, people over the years have come to know that Mario's character trait isn't swearing, it is being amusing/whimsical. With this in mind, unless Mario is thrown into something no less than a survival horror, it will detract from the actual immersion that the player will have because Mario swears (even in the never-ending project "I, Mario", the swearing has been agreed it would be used only if tasteful - yes, that project is a survival horror).

Mario really shouldn't even talk. Nintendo generally makes it so that the protagonist doesn't seem to talk... :\

I know, I just noticed that on the background of the first part were the holes from A Link to the Past and I also noticed some of the platforms from YI. It actually didn't give me a YI or a Zelda feel, it felt a lot more unique. I loved the fact that you are showing us pics of a hack that you basically only did a few touches here and there(like the logs in one of the screenshots). It makes it more unique and less like some of the other hacks on here.

"What switch puzzle? Also, how would I make the first level edgier? It's edgy enough, in my opinion..."

I could see that. "The switch puzzle" was when you had to use the moving turn blocks like a vehicle to grab the springboard(I forgot the official name for a little bit unfortunately), which is very simple but seemed like a good touch. It sort of made the level a little less straight forward.

Don't mind my comment on edginess. It is a good enough level to be included in your hack, and has a style to it that makes it fit in. If there was only one flaw, what I meant was it looked a little bit too straight-forward and a little bit too typical, However, it is one level and you are the designer.

For example, the mushroom and 1-up mushroom placements seemed to be typical almost like if Mario went this one route he will instantly win. The mushroom led to the pipe to the flag and the 1-up mushroom was in a hidden box near a very predictable puzzle of invisible blocks. If there was one flaw, the level design is great especially at the beginning what with the passageways, the coin patterns and decoration, it was in the way Mario had to get through the level.

My prescription: try to make the Mushroom a little bit more obscure in a faraway place or a distant location. You want the player to think, for example, to get the 1-up mushroom so that the game doesn't become too easy. Nintendo, themselves, did it where they didn't just throw a 1-up Mushroom and go "they'll find it". Remember, part of the Mario games are in exploration, and part of it also is in showing. Putting an invisible block puzzle, near a 1-up mushroom that the player must get might seem more obvious since you got it in the video, but it doesn't seem that unpredictable.

IMO it isn't that big of a deal. I would say though that it sounded funny as Mario sounded like a bloody Englishman and not like a bloody New Yorker. If I can give a little bit more constructive criticism it is to make him sound like one.

Maybe have Damn ::insert Godfather reference here:: that was a long swim or something. Something that makes him authentic. Maybe even have him use Italian curse words instead of Damn to height his ethnicity. I've seen plenty of people who, when they want to utter a swear word or something inappropriate, drop back to a word from a language which their ancestors spoke in 500 years ago. It is a way so that nobody takes offense who is a casual listener.

::5 Hours Later::

Otherwise the new blocks look very good. When they call it level "design" they are not kidding, and it seems like you are trying to become more of a carpenter. It is bloody marvelous mate!

What this means, I guess, is that if Mario jumped to punch out the blue block it will just dissapear. Especially since it is a small Mario that looks like he is doing the work, it is nifty.

And can provide some more puzzles to develop some character to your hack. I like the graphics but they seem fit more for a computerized level or something from Earthbound. Keep at it!
