How to use Addmusic 4.05

The checksum doesn't mean anything except that it has been edited with another tool that isn't LM.

yeah i know. before this process i completely hacked a level and still nothing changed.

*sigh*
well like usual something i really want doesnt work for me..... but im not giving up, anything you think i should tell you? like what im doing? because im just stumped.

one thing i would like to rant about is how rediculously complicated addmusic and other smw tools are. is there any way to make them more simple?

Really? It seems really simple to me, just copy/paste a music in the level folder, then add it in the .ini file (don't forget to end the name with the extention .txt), then open cmd.exe and type some words and done.

Why copy cmd? Can't you "cd" into the addmuaisfolder?
Your layout has been removed.
Or, if you're using Windows 7 (and I assume Vista), you can just shift + right-click the folder (either a blank area in the folder or the icon itself if you're in the directory above it) and click "Open command window here". #w{=D}

I honestly don't see how it's any easier than using cmd.exe. All you have to do in cmd.exe is press the Up key and enter.
It's easier to use a batch file because you don't have to type "addmusic.exe (name of your ROM).smc" every single time you add a song; you just double-click an icon. It removes the possibility of making a typo, especially if you do what I do and keep your hack in another folder. Also, I always thought of copying system files as being inelegant. :/

...No. If you keep cmd open, press Up and Enter and it'll reinsert everything.
I think a post layout goes here somewhere...
I tend to just insert one or a few songs/sprites/patches at a time, so I'd rather not keep three instances of cmd.exe open for a few years until I finish my hack...

You don't need to keep more than 1 cmd open, ever, cmd will insert every song you have in the .ini file at one time.

Edit: Ah nvm, I misread your last post.

I already typed this before you edited your post, but didn't get to post it because I had to leave for a while, but I don't want to delete all of it, so:

I meant I'd have one window open for Addmusic, one for Spritetool, and one for xkas with your method (although now that I think about it, your method wouldn't work for patches anyway unless they all had the same name, so it would only be two windows). I think you're assuming that we're inserting all the songs we're going to insert at one time? Because I tend to add and delete stuff all the time, so that wouldn't really be practical for me. Every time you open cmd.exe, you'll have to type it once. Batch files, on the other hand, were made to be automated—after making the file you never have to type anything again.

Also, I've considered having a batch file that runs the other batch files so I could easily run multiple programs at once, which would come in very handy if I wanted to port to a new ROM, for example, which would be much faster than running cmd.exe over and over. Anyway, I think everyone just finds that doing things their own way is what works best for them, so there isn't really much point in debating which way is "better", so long as it works. :)

I'm talking about from a porting perspective, not a "I need this at this time and I'll use this later" perspective :P

*cough*

It's different for us music porters because we're constantly inserting/editing ports into the ROM. Closing cmd.exe after each and every test insertion is redundant so most of us keep it open.

hey i had an idea.

ill explain exactly how i add music and you try it and tell me what im doing wrong:
i take my rom and save it in lunar magic at least once. then i put the rom in the addmusic405 folder with addmusic and everything else along with cmd. then i download music and take the music txt and put it in the level folder, then i open addmusic.ini and type the name of the music in number 20 and save. then i open cmd and type "addmusic.exe rom name.smc -se. then enter. now "addmusic.exe rom name.smc" and enter again.
then thats it. i open lunar magic, select the music, and play the game and it freezes at "mario start"

so again, try what i said and if it doesnt work tell me what im doing wrong.

thanks for your time!

That does look like the correct procedure. Which song are you using, and does Addmusic give you any errors during the insertion process?

EDIT: ...you aren't actually typing in "rom name.smc", are you?

no of course not. i dont type rom name.smc, i type the name of my rom in the addmusic folder.

it DOES give me an error... well a few.
first off, sometimes my rom names have spaces but cmd cant have spaces in the rom name so i cant get around that.

anyway i just tried again and yet again it froze.
um.... maybe i could try romi's addmusic?
unfortunatly theres nothing here actually called romi's addmusic so could i be linked it? assuming addmusic405 isnt romi's..

When you wrote the song's name in the .ini, did you ended its name with the extention .txt?
