Some time ago, I announced a set of restrictions for what characters you can use in your user name. Also some time ago, but not as much, I actually implemented them so that they are enforced for all new users.
In my first announcement, I said that people would be able to request a free name change if their user name was in violation of the restrictions. Now is the time to make sure all user names conform with them.
For your reference, allowed characters are now letters (uppercase and lowercase), numbers and symbols space ( ), comma (,), hyphen (-), apostrophe ('), period (.) and underscore (_). Furthermore, user names must begin with an alphanumeric character and must include at least one letter.
As before, you will be given an opportunity to request a free name change by sending a private message to an administrator. All user names not conforming with the rules by Monday, October 24 will be nuked! Of course, you may still have a free name change after this deadline.
Maybe a silly question to ask, but out of curiosity: What exactly will happen when you nuke someone's username?
Will they have no display name at all?

It is replaced with the user id.

Wait, wouldn't that be against the restrictions?

its just meant to be a temporary thing until you change your name back to something that does not break the rules. Its better then mods changing it to "idiot" or something.

Yeah, so what if I haven't shoveled out my signature yet, I'll get to it later.

Somewhat. It is the reason why that restriction exists in the first place - to prevent collisions when nuking the name.
oooh. You are a clever one

Well, by this moment I've never seen any user with a username that violates these restrictions...Nothing worth looking at here.

Wait, wasn't there also a rule that usernames need to be at least 3 characters long? (I was pretty sure I heard that somewhere... though it doesn't seem to be in that original announcement, so not sure where I heard that anymore.)
Are you going to make an announcement like this one each year?Nothing worth looking at here.
Surely coding in these limitations would be far easier then asking users to kindly not register with said names.
Heck the odds are a new user wont have checked this thread before registering. In all honesty, how many of you checked 'announcements' before you registered.
