Mario: Lost in the Forest Team Hack- HOSTED AT AURORUS PRODUCTIONS FORUM
Hello! This is a forest-themed team hack that has been around quite a while and has had a few changes in leadership. Anyway, this thread's purpose is to raise interest in the project, and hopefully get a few people to come on board! The team hack is being hosted on an alternate fourm called "Aurorus Productions", but you don't have to join up in order to contribute. The only thing that I ask is that before you contribute, you read the rules completely. Anyway, I know that you didn't come here to read my spiel, so let me give you what you are looking for!

Project Info
Storyline(In Progress)
Mario goes out for a walk in the forest, for no apparent reason. Suddenly, he runs into a Magikoopa, who teleports him deeper into the forest, causing Mario to get quite lost. Can he get out?
Project Guidelines (Read carefully!)
Claiming Levels
When you want to claim a level, first, go to the level list here. It will tell you the theme of the level, and whether or not it is open for claiming. To claim an open (white) level, either post in that thread or PM EvilGuy019, who is in charge of hack. You may only claim three levels at a time or less. If there are any resources that you KNOW that you’ll need, request them IMMEDIATELY after you request your level. After that, if you need any additional resources, claim them IMMEDIATELY after you know that you need them. Remember, if you wait to claim stuff until after your level is done, the slots that you used may not be open any more.
Designing Levels
While designing levels, always follow the SMWC Hack Submission guidelines. Try your best to make your level attractive, unique, and fun to play. Although you get a lot of freedom in how you design your level, always follow these rules:
1) Include exactly 5 Dragon coins, hidden throughout the level.
2) Include some regular coins as well, scattered throughout the level.
3) Include a midpoint roughly at the middle of the level. In levels with bosses, it should be a little closer to the end.
4) Decorate your level to at least some extent.
An exception to rules 1 and 3 are Switch Palaces. They should be short enough where they do not require Yoshi Coins or a midpoint, but should also be long enough to be considered an actual level. (e.g. longer than SMW's switch palaces.)
Finally, a note about difficulty. Having an unfitting difficulty is the most likely reason for your level to be rejected. Always remember, a level that is too easy is just as bad as one that is too hard. The difficulty from W1-W8 should get gradually harder, and WS should have the hardest levels. For WP, the difficulty will take large jumps between levels.
1st WP Level: W2 Difficulty
2nd WP Level: W4 Difficulty
3rd WP Level: W6 Difficulty
4th WP Level: W8 Difficulty
Level/World Themes
When designing your level, always make sure that it fits into the theme of the level/world listed on the level list. However, keep in mind that these are quite broad. If the level is simply listed as a “Forest” level, then you do not have to make a generic forest level. You can even do something like a train going through the forest.
Finally, although this is a forest hack, you don’t have to make a level foresty unless it specifically says so (which will be most but not all levels).
Map16
If you need a page or more of Map16 for your level, go to this thread to see which slots are available. Then, claim an open slot by posting in that thread, or PM’ing a leader. Keep in mind that pages are limited, so re-use your Map16.
Graphics
Use of both SMW and custom GFX is permitted. If you want to claim a custom graphics file, go to this thread to see which slots are available. Then, claim an open slot by posting in that thread, or PM’ing a leader. If you want some graphics drawn or ripped for you, contact a graphical associate.
Music
Use of custom music is recommended. You can use a song already inserted into the base rom, or pick one out from the custom music section. Sampled songs are fine, but don't use one that requires AddMusic M. Then, see which slots are available in this thread. Then, claim an open slot by posting in that thread, or PM’ing a leader. If you want some graphics ported or composed for you, contact a graphical associate.
Sprites
If you want a custom sprite that isn’t inserted into the base rom, go to this thread, and see which slots are open. Then, claim an open slot by posting in that thread, or PM’ing a leader. When you submit these sprites, keep in mind that they may need accompanying ExGFX.
Blocks
If you want a custom block that isn’t inserted into the base rom, go to this thread, and see which slots are open. Then, claim an open slot by posting in that thread, or PM’ing a leader.
Page A is reserved for custom blocks, but you can also put one on a page of Map16 that you claimed. If you need a block coded for you, contact a block associate.
As of now, there are block graphics are on ExGFX100. Those of you who will be using them in your level and don't have graphics of your own, set BG3 to 100. You can then insert the blocks directly from page 10. Also, the base rom folder will now include a file called "Block Palettes". This is a palette file with ONLY row 7 edited. If you are using those ExGFX, make sure to get Row 7 from there into your level.
If you have your own graphics for your blocks, then simply set a tile of your Map16 to act like the tile for the custom block on page A.
Secondary Exits
If you need secondary exits for your level, go to this thread to see which slots are available. Then, claim an open slot by posting in that thread, or PM’ing a leader.
Sublevels
If you need sublevels for your level, go to this thread to see which slots are available. Then, claim an open slot by posting in that thread, or PM’ing a leader.
Bosses
Bosses will be done after most or all of the levels are completed. All castle levels and fortresses will have a boss at the end, and they will be custom. If you are designing a fortress or castle, simply claim an extra sublevel, and have the door/pipe/boss door at the end lead to it. Now, a word about ghost houses. If you want, you can have a Big Boo battle at the end of any ghost house. However, it is completely optional.
Communication/Feedback
While designing your level, you may want some feedback. To get this, the easiest way is to make a level thread in the appropriate sub forum at Aurorus. If you are not a member, you can post screenshots/videos/ips’s in the thread here. Also, if you have questions/comments/complaints/useful ideas about the project, the best way to discuss them is to come to #mlintf, the official IRC channel for Lost in the Forest.
Dropping Levels
If you can’t complete a level, you are expected to let us know by PM. When you do, make sure to tell you which resources you claimed for the level, so I can drop them. If you are inactive for a month after claiming a level, we will PM you. If you don’t respond, you will lose your level and sublevels.
Submitting Levels
Always test your levels before submitting them. Complete levels should be submitted in the form of a zipped folder containing the following:
1) The level and any sublevels, in MWL format.
2) Any ExGFX files used, in BIN format.
3) Any music files used, in TXT format
4) Any Map16 files used, in M16 format (not BIN!)
5) Any blocks used, in ASM format.
6) Any sprites used, in ASM and CFG format, along with graphics if needed
Finally, send this folder directly to me in a PM. Your PM should also tell me the level name, and the text for any message blocks that you used in the level. The level will be tested, approved, and inserted to the base rom. You may then claim another level, if you wish.
