Yoshi's Strange Quest (V1.4 in progress)

Link Thread Closed

Standard

The problem is that I can't do a feedback on special levels now. What a terrible mishap.
Layout by piranhaplant.
Thinking about making a Rainbow Magic thread at the Media forum.
If you've already played through all the levels, then you should be able to tell me what you thought about the levels or if there were any major things that needed improving, even without your save data. You should also tell me which emulator you have been using and what you did to make the game crash, since I didn't encounter any serious bugs in that level when I tested that level (tell me in a PM, though).

Also, I was looking through the patch section, and I found a patch called "Warp When Dying" by wiiqwertyuiop that sounds like what I needed for Yoshi Theater for the custom death scene I wanted to implement in that level. Does anyone know how to make that patch work only in specific levels? I can't seem to get it to work as LevelASM.

I've got an update. I PMed Jimmy52905 earlier, asking about his progress with the Yoshi Ability patches, and he told me that not only did he fix most of the bugs, but he is also adding some new features to the patches (he didn't tell me what the new features were, though). Unfortunately, he said it was probably going to be another 2 weeks before he finishes the patches, so I won't be able to apply them to V1.1 of YSQ before I upload it (I don't want to keep anyone waiting any longer to play the next demo of YSQ). Like V1.0, I'll be uploading V1.1 to my file bin, so others can play it. However, sometime after Jimmy52905 finishes the patches, I will apply them to the YSQ ROM (something tells me I'll have to port to a new ROM when I do this. Good thing I have kept track of nearly everything I did to the ROM), make a few minor adjustments (if necessary), then submit YSQ to the hack section as V1.2.

Also, like I'm doing in the MSQ thread, every time I notice a new LP of YSQ, I'm going to link to the first part of it. Unlike in the MSQ thread, I'm going to link to them in the first post of this thread, so the list is easier to find. I'll start by adding a link to SMWROMhackperson's LP of V1.0 that I linked to earlier, as well as mentioning the LP pete6777 told me he was going to do after his MSQ LP.

As for updates to YSQ, I made one adjustment: I changed the song that plays in the cave submap from SMRPG - World Map to Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening: Angler's Tunnel.

Awesome! I cannot wait for the 1.2 demo =D I will play the 1.1 demo too though, but I am more excited to see the one after that (well of course =D).

Yeah, V1.2 will be an updated version of V1.1. The most obvious improvement will be that the custom ASM will work properly, or at least much better than before (that might be reason enough to get that version, even if you've played V1.1). I also plan on doing at least two other things:

- I'm going to add something silly to the first level.
- Because of one of the changes I made today to YSQ, I plan on editing the player graphics a little. I'll show off what they look like once I've edited more than a few frames.

Also, sometime tomorrow, I am going to start playtesting YSQ again, so I can get it ready for Friday.

As for updates, I made a few more changes to YSQ:
- I added in a few more songs (so far, there are almost as many songs in YSQ as there was in MSQ, and about 95% of them were not used in MSQ).
- I updated the two files that will come with the IPS patch (the readme, and a file that contains the credits).
- I added a background to certain cutscene rooms.
- I noticed that I have five different styles of Yoshi in YSQ, so I decided that I should have more graphical consistency. I replaced the redrawn and SMAS SMB3 style Yoshis with a NSMB style Yoshi. I plan on doing the same with the YI and the YI DS style ones (which includes the Yoshi you play as), though I have to edit the graphics of these ones, since replacing them isn't quite that simple.

It's Friday. Guess what that means? It means that V1.1 of YSQ is available now for others to play, LP, TAS, etc. Click the link below to download it (I'm going to update all the links I made to V1.0 of YSQ, so that you download V1.1 instead. You can click those links once they say "YSQ V1.1)":

YSQ V1.1

Also, I've got some progress with those graphics I'm editing, so now I can show off what I did. Here is a few random frames I edited, plus the original for comparison:

Each of these Yoshis (except the one on the far right) is in a pair. The left one is the one I edited, while the right one is what that frame looked like originally. The Yoshi on the far right is what I'm trying to make the player graphics resemble. I've edited all of the frames used by big Yoshi (this includes the death frame, the P-balloon frame even though I may not be able to use the P-balloon, and this frame where Yoshi looks like he is wearing a shirt that I have no idea what it's used for). I tested out these graphics in a copy of YSQ, and they seem alright (though there is this annoying white line that appears during Yoshi's idle animation when he turns his head that I can't get rid of). I'm not exactly great at drawing (especially in pixels), but I think I did alright. What do you guys think? Did I make the player graphics look more like the NSMB Yoshi on the far right? I'm still working on these graphics, so keep that in mind.

Edit: All the links I made to V1.0 of YSQ have been updated, so that you download V1.1 instead of V1.0.

Another Edit: Before I forget, if you download V1.1 of YSQ, make sure you read the included readme (specifically the "Controls" and "Notes" sections). I mention a few things that you should know about.

You know what? I'm a little surprised that only 9 people have downloaded YSQ V1.1 since I uploaded it to my file bin. I guess not many people are interested in playing it (or maybe some of you are waiting for V1.2, I don't know). Now that I think of it, I probably should have shown off a few screenshots of the hack a few days ago, so I'm going to do that now (as well as give a description):

Originally posted by readme.txt that comes with YSQ

This is the sequel to Mario's Strange Quest. Picking up where Mario's Strange Quest left off, it turns out that the part where Yoshi's eggs hatched at the end of MSQ didn't actually happen. What actually happened after Mario beat Bowser was that Yoshi decided to move to a new land so that he can protect his eggs from Bowser. So, Yoshi does so, and finds himself in the land of Weirdonia. Of course, it seems that Bowser insists on stealing Yoshi's eggs, since Yoshi's eggs have been stolen again while Yoshi was out shopping. Since Mario isn't around to help, and because Mario already did it, Yoshi decides to go on a quest to retrieve his eggs from Bowser. However, just like Mario's Strange Quest, this isn't your ordinary quest. Expect the unexpected.

This hack features:
- 31 levels (42 exits)
- Custom Graphics
- Custom Overworld
- SNES compatibility
- Custom Music
- Custom Sprites
- Custom Blocks
- Custom ASM
- Plenty of level variety

Here's some screenshots (note: I reused a few screenshots from earlier. The part of the level shown in the older screenshots hasn't been changed, but the status bar has. The last two pictures show what the status bar looks like now):

This is the title screen for Mario's Strange Quest 2. Wait... that wasn't what the hack was called!

Wow! Great decision making, Yoshi! Hiring your extremely tired friend over to guard your eggs while you went shopping was a great idea! There is no way your eggs would get stolen a second time because of this! [/sarcasm]

Yoshi must be in heaven right now.

Something doesn't feel right. I can't quite put my finger on it...

It's time for some sand, surf, and intense gamma radiation. Wait, what?

Hey! Wait a sec! I thought Yoshis were afraid of ghosts.

Oh, cool...
Good fucking bye.
Hey guys, I've got a couple of updates for YSQ.

- While I haven't been working on any new levels (for V1.3) in detail, I did get started on a few levels. One of them is called "Yoshi Race". Here's a screenshot showing what the level looks like:

Yoshi: Hey! Yoshi does not want to race you! What part of "no" do you not understand?

As soon as this level starts, the orange Yoshi challenges Yoshi to a race. As soon as you hit the ON/OFF block, you must get to the end of the level before the orange Yoshi does or you die instantly (this happens regardless of where you are in the level). Of course, since this is going to be a world 1 level, it's not going to be too hard to beat the orange Yoshi.

Another level I got started on is a level called "Gravity Grove", where the gravity is strange (Fish swimming in air, floating water, Yoshi can't throw eggs or jump from the ground (he can still flutter jump if he is in the air, though)). I don't have much to show of it right now, though. I'm also working a bit on a level called "Blackout Mansion" which has the same gimmick as Blackout Basement (I think that is what it's called) from Donkey Kong Country, where the lights go out every couple of seconds, preventing you from seeing any platforms, though you can still see sprites. Again, there's not much to show of this level yet.

- I added a few messages to a few levels. Also, I added a silly cutscene to one of the levels (not going to say which one, though).

- I changed the logo that appears on the Nintendo Presents screen:

This logo is very similar to the one from Tetris Attack. Also, I made a different version of this logo that says "Yoshifanatic Presents" instead of "Yoshi Presents", but I liked the one I'm showing off better.

So, that's all I got to say for now.

For the racing level, it might make sense to add a start-of-level message so the player has some time to react, unless the Orange Yoshi is also restricted by the on/off blocks. Otherwise, looks good!

I'm way ahead of you. I put a message at the start of this level, which is: "Orange Yoshi- Hey, you! You want to race? Yoshi won't take no for an answer! Last one to the finish is a rotten Yoshi egg!"

Also, those purple blocks are solid until the ON/OFF Switch is hit, so neither you or the orange Yoshi can get a head start in this race.

As for updates, I've replaced some of the SMW graphics with redrawn style graphics. These changes aren't very noticeable, aside from the graphics in the ghost house tileset (these graphics were unedited before, so this change will be noticeable).

Yoshifanatic here again, ready to bring several updates on how yesterday went for me, err, I mean updates for YSQ.

- At this point, I've pretty much finished doing all the minor things I was too lazy to do or forgot to do before I uploaded V1.1, as well as a few things I didn't originally plan on doing. So now, all that's left for me to do for YSQ is wait for Jimmy52905 to finish fixing the Yoshi Abilities patches (as well as fix any glitches that I may have missed). I wonder how much progress he's made since I last PM'ed him 3 weeks ago?

- As for the changes I made, here is just a few:
1. I've added a couple more songs to the game.
2. I changed one of the songs that plays on Yoshi's radio.
3. I added some decorations to a few places that had no decorations before (such as the second part of Not Scary House).
4. I added a bonus room to one of the levels. This room has a silly idea present in it, though I won't say what I put in there.
5. I added a credits sequence that can be accessed by a door I put in the end of demo level.
6. I partially implemented a few ideas that I plan on finishing in the final version. Some of these ideas are quite interesting, though you will have to wait until the final version is out (or if I decide to talk about some of them here) to see what I thought up. :P

- For V1.2 of YSQ, I don't plan on having anyone playtest this version (other than me, of course), since V1.2 is going to be almost identical to V1.1 (aside from the numerous minor changes I made, and the fact that the custom ASM will be fixed). If someone does want to playtest V1.2 of YSQ, then I will let you, but whatever you do, DO NOT TAKE FOREVER TO PLAYTEST!! If you are too busy to playtest YSQ when that time comes, then please tell me that you won't be able to playtest YSQ. I'd rather not get angry again over playtesters who take way more time than necessary to playtest.

- I noticed today that I surpassed the number of songs I used in V1.6 of MSQ (approx. 80 songs were used in V1.6 of MSQ). I wonder if I'll be able to find a use for them all?

- I've decided to not change the player's graphics. It's not because the edited version of the original graphics looked bad or anything (I think they looked fine), it's more because they seem a bit out of place, considering the overall graphics style in YSQ. Also, there is this annoying white line that I can't get rid of that appears on Yoshi's mouth every time he turns his head during his idle animation. This wouldn't bother me so much if it wasn't so noticeable (this occurs with the original Yoshi graphics as well, but only one pixel is a different color than it's supposed to be, so it's very hard to notice, unless you pause the game at the right time). This seems to be an emulation bug, since that line appears in zsnes, but not bsnes.

That's all the updates I got for now. Also, since V1.1 of YSQ has been out for a while now, how is the hack? Are the 18 people (as of this writing) who downloaded V1.1 of YSQ enjoying it? Is there anything I could do to improve it for V1.2? I want to know what you guys think of it.

I've got another update. A little while ago, someone named UltraDragonYoshi, that I got to know a bit these past few days, started an LP of V1.1 of YSQ, which I'm going to link to here and in the first post of this thread for others to see:

Link

A quick note about the part I linked to: there is no commentary, unfortunately (he has no way of recording his voice, yet). He may add annotations later, though.

This is the first LP of V1.1 of YSQ, so I'm not going to complain about the lack of live commentary, though.

As for updates to YSQ, I've been making even more adjustments to YSQ to improve the quality of it for V1.2 while I wait for Jimmy52905 to finish fixing and adding features to the Yoshi Abilities patches (I PMed him a couple of days ago, and he's still not finished yet. I'm still not sure when he'll finish, but it will be worth the wait anyway). Here is just a few of the several adjustments I made:

- The background used in the both Dinosaur Trail and Cookie Crisis looks better than it did before (that's because I switched to Masterlink's version of that background). I did have to make minor sacrifices to both levels to make this change, however (like, remove the note blocks in Cookie Crisis, for example).
- I changed the color of the overworld border to green.
- I animated the berries that appear as decorations in some levels.
- I made it so that, instead of recycling the same message (and joke from MSQ), each one of the Switch Palace switches gives their own unique message when pressed.
- I replaced the lakitu in Yoshi Woods with a flying fish generator (why? Because it was causing sprite memory errors that I didn't notice before, and a whopping 0 sprite memory settings would fix it, even though I have No More Sprite Tile Limits applied to the ROM).
- I put back the "Mario Start!" message that appears at the start of a level and changed it to say "Yoshi Start!" (It took me an hour to do this. I had to edit 15 addresses in the ROM map to get that result! Since I'm a nice guy, I'm going to post the hex edits that are necessary to make this change if others have been wanting to do that. If this has been posted elsewhere already, then I had no idea, and I'm sorry.):

Code:
Change the bytes at these addresses to the following if you want "Mario Start!" to say "Yoshi Start!"

x012d9 = 00
x012da = 13
x012db = 5D
x012dc = 03 (default byte. Don't change this)

x012dd = 01 (This setting must be changed if you are using the default "Time Up!" message, as you will need to overwrite the top half of the letter P with custom graphics for the top half of the letter Y if you use this byte.)

x012de = FF
x0130D = 00
x0130e = 13
x0130f = 5D
x01310 = 03
x01311 = 00
x01342 = B4
x01373 = 34
x01374 = F4
x01375 = B4
x01376 = B4

That's all the things I wanted to say for now.

Edit: Part 2 of UltraDragonYoshi's LP is up (wow, that was fast). Also, I forgot to mention before, but the reason I decided to post the hex edits I made to change that message was because I heard that editing those messages is very tedious (which, of course, didn't stop me from doing it anyway), so I decided to help others who use Yoshi, as the character you play as, in their hacks who wanted to change that message.

Hey, guys. I finally got back to making levels again for YSQ after, I believe, two months. It felt good putting a serious effort into making a level after such a long time. :)

Anyway, a few hours ago, I made a video showing part of the level I'm currently working on, called "Apple Woods". Sounds like a nice, peaceful level, right? Wrong! Apparently, every single apple in the level kills on contact (and there is a lot of them!). Why do they kill you? You'll have to watch the video I'm going to link to in a bit to find out, though I will say it is for a silly reason (even Yoshi thinks it's a stupid reason). Not only do you have to worry about the apples (both stationary ones, and ones that fall really fast when you approach), but you must also avoid fish, urchins, and Torpedo Teds coming out of pipes (among other things). It's actually quite challenging, which is what I am aiming for, since this is a world 5 level.

So, here's the video I mentioned earlier:

What do you guys think of the level?

4 times double post...
Let me break that chain!

About level iself:
It looks good but it's too easy (and creepy because I don't like water levels).
Also to Yoshies:
Find secrets and don't swim in water.
I probably made the level look easy, but it is a bit harder than it looks. Every single apple kills you instantly when you touch them (this includes the falling orange apples, which are an edited version of the falling spike disassembly sprite (I made it so they kill you when you touch them, no matter what)). Not only that, but it gets harder after the midpoint, when a completely invincible Porcu-Puffer starts swimming along the center of the screen, and you'll have to swim past it many times.

Also, when you told me that you didn't like the water levels in YSQ because you thought they were creepy, I thought it was because of the music I used in them (DKC3 Water World does sound a bit creepy and mysterious). I'm using "Speedy Gonzales: Los Gatos Bandidos - Surely Wood" as the level music for Apple Woods, so that can't be the case. Unfortunately, world 5 in YSQ is an underwater forest, so there are going to be water levels galore (Since water levels tend to be boring for a lot of people, I'm going to try to make these water levels interesting, so that World 5 isn't a borefest).

Also, thanks for showing me where I could get those Elite Koopas, Luigi370. When I saw them in that video I linked to in the "What is That?" thread, I knew I wanted to use them in YSQ (I'll probably use them in some of the later levels). Before I forget, does anyone know who made the Elite Koopas? I want to give credit to that person, like I've done for every other resource I've put in YSQ.

I heard about that from Ramp202 when I asked what kind of koopas those were. It would be nice to know who made the Elite Koopas, so I can credit that person for it, if I haven't already done so for something else that person made (a patch, a custom block, or a custom sprite).

As for updates, don't expect to see any of the levels I finish between now and when I upload V1.2 to be a part of V1.2. I want to keep the number of levels the same as in V1.1, since the point of V1.2 is to fix V1.1's biggest problem (the custom ASM's glitches), and be more polished overall.

As for updates regarding YSQ LPs, UltraDragonYoshi's LP is up to 10 parts now.

Hey, guys. I just wanted to let you know that pete6777 finally started his LP of YSQ. The link to the first part can be found here and in the first post for those that want to see it:

Link

Unlike UltraDragonYoshi's LP (which was completed a while ago, by the way), pete6777's LP has live commentary. Also, judging from when pete6777 uploaded new parts to his MSQ LP (which he finished today), I think he will be uploading two parts to his YSQ LP every Tuesday.

As for updates on YSQ, very little progress has been made in the past month, since I'm waiting for you-know-who to finish you-know-what, and because I haven't really been up to working on YSQ.

Also, I really would like to know who made the Elite Koopas, so that I can give credit to him/her for them. Is the person who made them unknown or something? Or did one of these people that I am crediting for something else make them:

I don't understand why people do LPs on demo hacks. It would be really cheap if someone did a LP on a demo hack first, and then a LP on the final version. You're doing nothing but the same thing the in the first couple of videos, and then you get to the stuff that is new. I'd rather do LPs on final versions so it doesn't make me look cheap. Also can some edit the post #212? That code he inputed is causeing the whole thread to stretch.
