I think several people who regularly post in this forum need to be reminded of a few of the rules we have here.

Please read over these rules in particular:

Originally posted by Rules: General Behavior
1. Don't flame or troll.
Treat other users with respect. Don't provoke others.

Originally posted by Rules: Forum Rules
1. Do not spam.
Avoid creating unnecessary posts with little or no thought involved.

6. Don't backseat moderate.
Don't tell the staff what to do, and furthermore do not try to enforce your own rules on the site. You are welcome to politely point things out to other users, but you are not superior to them and should not act as such. If you have a concern or question, please send the appropriate staff member a private message.

The reason that I bring these up is that I have noticed a pattern among a small group of users who seem to almost "patrol" this forum for new users making hack threads.

Granted, sometimes new users will make mistakes when making new threads, like neglecting to add screenshots or stretching tables with huge screenshots or similar minor issues. There is nothing wrong with informing a user about our policies.

However, if you are going to tell a user they need screenshots, or that they need to link to pictures instead of direct sourcing, please have some other relevant information in your post whenever it is possible to do so. If a user has posted content that can be commented on, please do so. Offer them a welcome to the site. Anything less could be considered "creating unnecessary posts with little or no thought involved" -- spamming. And definitely, if one person has already advised a user they are violating a guideline, it doesn't need to be said again.

Along those lines, new users are new here for a reason -- they are often learning about LM for the first time. They aren't necessarily going to do things well or "right." We encourage everyone to give these users constructive critcism. That means instead of saying "GAH! FIX YOUR PALETTES THEY'RE BURNING MY EYES NOOB!" you say "I honestly think your palettes need some more work; you might want to choose colors that are less bright." See how one way is attacking the person and the other way is helping them? We want to help people. Doing anything less can be considered flaming or trolling, and people who make that a habit do not last long here.

Last but not least, please do not backseat moderate. That means don't tell the staff what to do and don't tell other users what to do like you are a member of staff. At best, you will only be creating unnecessary posts (spamming) and making yourself seem like a bossy jerk; at worst, you will give out wrong information. Not to pick on anyone, but this is a good example -- I recently saw someone tell a user that he should test his own hack instead of asking other people to do so. Meanwhile, we have an entire thread for people who want others to test their hacks. This is why you shouldn't tell people what to do -- you might not be giving them correct information.

tl;dr
1. Don't make pointless redundant spammy posts.
2. Don't be an asshole toward other users.
3. Don't backseat moderate.

If I moderated your hack, there was apparently a 90 percent chance it was rejected.
Word. I have seen a lot of this lately, it is good to inform us about it. Like you said, do not be a dink to new users, it isn't needed, they just need to be guided.

Yes, new users won't do anything outstanding at the first try.
Nothing worth looking at here.

Not entirely true. Someone new made a thread about their first hack and it is one of the best hacks I've seen in a while. This was a few months ago I think. When I say months I probably mean weeks because I'm awful with remembering that stuff haha

...Anyway this is a nice post. Unfortunately I, occasionaly, am that "You need screenshots" guy. I apologize.
I like how you linked to wikipedia for the people who go "Constructive... critcism?"
#w{xD}
But anyway, good thing you set the ground rules.

Who knows? Maybe they had any experience before joining SMWC.
Maybe with LM itself or with another editor of another editable Mario game.

Agreed. Some people come here with outstanding work to show off. Most...not so much. But all the same, there's no reason not to be nice to anyone who comes here with a decent attitude.

Like I said -- nothing wrong with letting people know what to do as long as you're giving them more than just that.

Absolutely.

The thing is, exclaiming an insult about a new hackers work can shun them away, and they may never return. If you provide that same hacker with constructive criticism and other sorts of support, you are helping in bringing on the next generation of great hackers.

Kindness can go a long way, whereas rudeness goes nowhere.

- Super Mario World Beta (2009)

Yes, I used to be rude, until I got banned from another site.
Being kind is good. This is for those who think that being kind is for [insert non-offensive name]:
F**K YOU!
EDIT: Sorry.

That last part, its partially wrong. Some users who backseat mod have actually given out corrct information about things abeit were being jerks. I seen it happen before in other forums.
Modern Redrawn Mario Bros. 1.5 (last update - February 14, 2023, some new bonus frames, tons of minor touchups to various poses)

On Pixel Art Requests: Depends on what it is and if I have the time for it. If its complex and I don't have the time, don't expect me to accept it.

Projects I support:

Of course it's partially wrong. I wasn't saying that people who backseat moderate ALWAYS give out wrong information. I was saying they SOMETIMES do. In both cases, it's best not to do it at all.

It's not helping anyone for a person to act as though they are representing the entire site but to meanwhile give out incorrect information. That said, there's nothing wrong with giving people helpful and accurate information if you do it in a courteous way.

In any event, this was just one example. This isn't even counting the "mods, close this thread" and "someone ban this guy" posts that we see all too often.

It might be a good idea to move the rules thread here, seeing that this is the most posted in subforum for Hack Discussion.

The rules thread applies to the whole site, though -- not just this forum. People should be responsible enough to read the rules and abide by them wherever and whenever they post.

This happens in all the forums.

Agreed. But we're trying to put a stop to it here, because it (along with the other things) has become an issue.

I meant the one in Hack Discussion, not the one in announcements.

Ah sorry -- I misunderstood. Worth considering.

It should be common sense that the rules that are posted in a forum in a site apply for all the forums of the site, but it's not.

I've got to say, I'm not really liking most of the posting you've been doing in this thread. For the most part, it's sort of exactly what I'm talking about in terms of spammy posting -- several short, relatively pointless posts that reiterate points already made or state something obvious.

Well, maybe you'll use MY posts as a good example. That's why I'm goign to delete them.
EDIT: Done.
Nothing worth looking at here.
And if a user "messes up" on these policies, what about retaliation? That's not an answer, is it?

I think it's only fair that staff members should try to abide by these policies as well. If they do, that would be setting a good example for all of us.
Your layout has been removed.
The concern you're leveling here is fairly unrelated to the original purpose of this thread, which was to dissuade people from being total assholes when responding to hack threads. I'm closing this until it is resolved, although what's been said here doesn't really need to be discussed further anyway.
