So ummm... yeah. I'm really sorry about how awful I was as a beta tester. A lot of real life stuff jumped up and got in the way. When I did get some free time, I didn't really feel like writing out a comprehensive report so I'll just give you an overview of what I thought.

In the whole, it's good, but there are a few little niggly things that can bring the whole hack down. The delay between getting hit and dying, how poking your tongue out freezes all momentum, basically most of the issues I have are with the Yoshi patch. I hope you can get most of the issues sorted out, bcause it's all that's stopping your hack from being really good. Aesthetically, it's brilliant by the way.



Oh, here's the start of what was going to be a long written out report before stuff got shit. It points out a few things I noticed in ... maybe the first world and a bit.

Nice intro

Dinosaur Trail:
Seems odd how the dinorhine can jump up through the first groundpoundable blocks.
Another Yoshi issue found, if you groundpound a chuck, you get hit.

Lookalike Plains:
No problems here, enjoyed the intro.

Castle 1:
Had to eat a shell to end boss fight. Then could spit it during cutscene. Pretty amusing though, soI'd leave it in.

Misty Mine:
If you poke your tongue out mid barrel flight, especially heading diagonally, it looks really odd.
Also,you can poke your head out of the barrel by using the tongue grab.

Gaping Chasm:
Noticed here that if you have full capacity of eggs trying to eat something just pulls it towards you for a guaranteed hit.

Maybe disable A as a swimmng button if it's used for egg throwing, as you don't normally jump with it.

I accept your apology, Bleaghhh. Even though you've been busy, I'm glad you took the time to give me your opinion on some of the stuff, at least. Let me know what you think on the other parts of the hack when you are able to.

Unfortunately, there really isn't much I can do about the glitches caused by the Yoshi Abilities patches. I tried to look into them (as well as attempt to learn ASM), but I just couldn't do it. Jimmy52905 is fixing those patches up, but he isn't sure when he will finish.

Thanks. I've been trying to use a variety of custom BGs (not just ones from Yoshi's Island, as nice as they may be) and a few custom FGs (other than the Redrawn style ones), as well as a bunch of custom palettes. It's nice to hear that my choices were great.

I think that is caused by the fact that the breakable blocks act like tile 206 (outline of a green switch block). I will make it so that the Dino Rhino can't reach those blocks. As for the second thing you said, I never noticed that before. I checked it out, and that happened to me, though I have no idea how to fix that.

I like what I did at the start of that level, too. It's pretty funny to see Yoshi complain about the "bad design choice" I made, and then "fixes" it. Speaking of which, Yoshi complains a lot in YSQ (which might explain why he wanted Mario to rescue his eggs in MSQ, instead of getting them himself) and he makes several remarks about the hack's quality or about my design choices. Some of which are pretty funny.

There's not much I can do about that anyway, since the sprite that teleports you only works when there are no sprites on screen. On the other hand, it does make sense in a way (like defeating all of the boss's henchmen or making the room spotless, for example).

I know about these two glitches (and so does Jimmy52905), though there is nothing I can do about either of them.

Also, I checked out how many times V1.0 of YSQ has been downloaded, and it's been downloaded over 50 times (81 times to be exact). Nice, although I wish more people would have played that version while it was still new (or do an LP on it). I don't really mind, since the superior V1.1 of YSQ is almost finished anyway. Like I said before, after the playtesters finish playtesting YSQ and I fix as many flaws as I can, I will wait a few days before submitting the hack if Jimmy52905 hasn't finished fixing the patches. In that case, I will upload it to my file bin. After Jimmy52905 fixes the patches, I will apply them to YSQ, test YSQ, and then submit the hack to the hack section as V1.2. If Jimmy52905 does fix the patches before I decide to submit the hack, then I will apply the patches, test YSQ, and submit YSQ to the hack section as V1.1.

You know, since I've been waiting for the playtesters to finish, I've occasionally went into YSQ and made a few changes here and there to improve YSQ for when I finally get to submit it. I figured I should probably mention them (some of them I already mentioned before, but I will list them here anyway):

- On the "Nintendo Presents" screen, I changed the sound effect that plays to the Yoshi sound.
- In Gaping Chasm, I changed the text in the first message a little.
- I added a message at the end of Gaping Chasm.
- I replaced all the food graphics I drew with much better looking food (from Super Scibblenauts):

That food looks good enough to eat, doesn't it? Of course, that makes it all the more dangerous to Yoshi (in Fattening Plains, at least).

- I removed the sprite that caused that severe bug Luigi370 mentioned.
- I've added a bonus room to one of the levels that didn't have one before.
- I've added six songs into the game.
- I've replaced the song that plays in Yoshi Forest (instead of "Forbidden Melody", it is now "DKC3 - Treetop Tumble").
- I've replaced the song that plays in the second half of Gaping Chasm (instead of "DKC2 - Flight of the Zinger, it is now "DKC3 - Cavern Caprice).

That's about it. There are a few other things I plan on changing, such as fixing that bug with the Dino Rhino that Bleaghhh told me about, though.

Ok, GoldenSonic15. I'll be waiting to hear from you about YSQ.

Also, I was messing around with the LevelASM patch and a clean SMW ROM, and I figured out two things:

- I figured out why the YSQ ROM locked up when I tried to insert the inverse water block code as ASM. It was because I tried to patch Levelcode.asm to the ROM, when I was supposed to patch Level.asm instead .
- I figured out how to remove the status bar for specific levels. Not only will that be useful for levels, like Yoshi Theater, it will also give me more space to write text during the cutscenes.

Edit: I finally was able to get the ASM I mentioned in previously to work in YSQ. You won't believe how much trouble I was having trying to get the reverse control ASM to work properly, all because I didn't realize two things:

- If you are using the Yoshi Abilities Patches, then you are not supposed to use the LevelASM patch. Instead, you must use the yoshilevelasm patch that comes with the Yoshi Abilities patches.
- If a block came with a .bin file and an .asm file, then you must insert the .bin file as ASM, not the code in the .asm file.

All this trouble paid off finally (mostly for later on). I can now remove the status bar at will, and the gimmick of Reverse Cavern is implemented better (now, there are fewer glitches, and some of the limitations have been removed).

Hey, Corruptendo. It's nice to see you again. :)

As for updates on YSQ, I have two.

- Judging from what they told me, I'm assuming that GoldenSonic15 and Luigi370 are finished with playtesting (if you two are not, then let me know). It's nice to see that some of the playtesters are done, even though it's been a month since all the playtesters got the hack. Speaking of which, what really irks me about how long this is taking is that MSQ took around 10 days for all the playtesters (not counting me) to finish playtesting, whereas some of the playtesters for YSQ still haven't finished playtesting. V1.1 of YSQ is about 2/3 the length of V1.6 of MSQ, so this only makes it more annoying that it is taking this long. For the playtesters who are still playtesting YSQ, please finish playtesting YSQ soon. Don't keep me waiting much longer.

- I made a few adjustments and fixed a few glitches I noticed when I was playing some of the levels in YSQ.
1. During cutscenes where you can't see Yoshi, I made it so no graphics are loaded in SP1 or SP2. Why? Because I found out that it is possible to see some of those graphics during these cutscenes (pressing the A button would cause a black targeting cursor to appear on screen, for example).
2. In Soda Warehouse, when Yoshi is riding the soda bottle, his eggs and his health counter (if his number of HP is greater than 9) are brown. I fixed this.
3. I added some green coins to one of the harder levels (not going to say which one) to make it a little easier.
4. I adjusted one of the boo rings in Nightmare Forest, because I noticed that Yoshi can die while entering a pipe (if he touches something that hurts him and his health is low enough).
5. I changed how you exit the second half of S.S. Sunk for the same reason as 4.
6. I moved the goal at the end of Castle Crush, because I noticed that the Yoshi coin is visible while the screen is fading during the goal walk (the flashing color doesn't fade away).
7. I added some Layer 1 sparkles to the cave submap.
8. Not really an adjustment or a bug fix, but I partially implemented a few ideas that I will work on fully after I submit V1.1 of YSQ. One of which is an interesting level idea that uses the Yoshi sprite (I'll discuss that idea later, when I actually have more than just the idea implemented). Adventurous types who take a peek at the YSQ rom in Lunar Magic will find all sorts of things, like graphics I plan on using later, partially implemented levels, messages I may or may not use, etc.

You know what? I've just about had it waiting for all the playtesters to finish playtesting YSQ. If the playtesters who haven't finished playtesting YSQ (you know who you are) haven't finished by next Friday (October 14), then I'm just going to assume they bailed out on me, and then I'm going to start getting YSQ ready for its release. There is no reason at this point why it should be taking this long for the playtesters to finish (if you guys were really this busy, why didn't you just tell me ahead of time that you couldn't playtest YSQ, like Corruptendo did? That would have been a lot better than wasting my time and making me get really upset wondering when you guys would finish). I'm a very patient person (most of the time, at least), but I do have my limits. Having to wait a month for a few people to finish playtesting my hack that should have been finished a while ago (especially considering that I made a longer hack, yet it didn't take nearly as long to playtest) is NOT acceptable in my book.

Ok then. Now I know for sure that you are finished (also that rant was directed towards ToonLinktheFairy and Bleaghhh, since they are the ones who have yet to finish, not you and GoldenSonic15). As for Chocolate Lake, I'm guessing you found that level creepy because of the music, as I don't see any other reason why you would (DKC3 - Water World does have a bit of a spooky tone to it now that I think of it).

Did you even read my rant? That wasn't a bright idea to tell me that after I got upset at you and Bleaghhh for taking way too much time playtesting. You had a month to do this, so you are going to quit wasting my time and just get it over with (the same applies to you, Bleaghhh). Also, you told me that you had one exit left to find on Sept. 13, so why is it taking you so long to find that exit, or were you lying to me about your progress?

(A note to Bleaghhh: I'm a little less upset at you, since you at least gave me some feedback on YSQ, but that doesn't mean you can slack off. Please don't waste any more of my time, and just get it over with).

Also, I have an update. Today, I found out that someone made an LP for V1.0 of YSQ. I will link to it at the end of this post for those that want to see it. Also, last night, I got a PM from someone who was interested in doing an LP of both MSQ and YSQ. I don't know when he will be starting them, but I will link to both of them (in the appropriate thread, of course) when he makes them. Also, since I've been supporting his hack and since he said he was going to do LPs of SMW hacks, I asked Mastertech2020 to do an LP of one of my hacks. When and if he does LP them, I'll link to them in the appropriate threads.

As for the video, I should mention that the quality of the video I'm about to link to isn't that great. The LPer also mentions some things I already know about (I don't need to be reminded about the glitches in the custom ASM. All I can do about it is wait until Jimmy52905 fixes the patches). On the other hand, this is the first LP of YSQ, and I've been wondering when someone would LP it, so I'm not going to complain about the negative aspects.

yoshifanatic, I have bad news. I finished all the levels and I got to the Secret House but while listening to the music, my emulator crashed. I guess my playtesting is over. I guess I forgot to savestate before going into the Secret House.

It crashed in Secret House? What emulator are you using? I tested that level (well, all levels) in both zsnes and bsnes, and the game didn't crash when I played that level. Also, unless the .srm file somehow got wrecked after your emulator crashed, I don't see how you would have lost your save data. Anyway, if you really are done, then you should give me feedback on what needs improving or what you thought I did really well (preferably in a PM).
