Yoshi's Strange Quest (V1.4 in progress)

Link Thread Closed

Standard

I just found the issue with shooting eggs. It must have anything to do with Sprite Limitations. I was fighting the World 3 boss when I first saw an issue.

I don't think that is sprite limitations that is causing that. Sometimes, when an egg hits that boss (or some other enemies, like wigglers), it spawns a sprite coin. If this happens, you need to get rid of the coin by eating it, touching it, or letting it move far enough from the screen before Yoshi can throw another egg. I have no idea how to fix it or why that happens. I mentioned this glitch (along with a few others) in the readme so that players will at least be aware of some of the bigger glitches with the Yoshi Abilities patches.

I have something to tell the playtesters. Luigi370 told me that there is a glitch in S.S Sunk that causes the screen to scroll weird and causes Yoshi to get blocked by invisible obstacles. It turns out that this is caused by the sprite I put in after testing that level (it's the sprite that turns off generators, like the reappearing ghost generator). I feel like an idiot for not retesting this level after putting that sprite in, so I apologize to the playtesters who have gotten to that level and encountered that glitch. Luckily, this happens at the end of the last level in the demo (the level after S.S Sunk is the end of demo level), so at least you guys aren't missing much.

While I think it is possible to beat this level even with this glitch in effect, if you want to beat that level without that glitch occurring, go to level BF in Lunar Magic and take out the two "Turn off generator 2" sprites on screen 0A.

Thanks, ToonLinktheFairy. I really should have retested that level after putting that sprite in, even though it didn't look like it would cause such an error.

Anyway, I made a couple of minor changes to the hack that I should note here:

- I changed the song that plays in the second half of Gaping Chasm from DKC2 - Flight of the Zinger to DKC3 - Cavern Caprice.
- I changed the song that plays throughout Yoshi Woods from Jungle (from Mario's Keytastrophe) to DKC3 - Treetop Tumble.
- I added a silly message at the end of Gaping Chasm.
- I took out the sprites in S.S. Sunk that caused that bug that Luigi370 told me about.

As for what Luigi370 told me in a PM, I'm probably not going to make Key Cavern shorter. In Lunar Magic, the main part of that level is 10 screens (hex) (11, if you count the area the reset door takes you). I don't think it hard enough that you would need to "do things like kaizo" to beat it, either.

As for what GoldenSonic15 said in a PM, I went back, and checked the Thwomp Boss battle, and I noticed that there are some glitches with it. I tried to look into the .asm file to see if I could fix it, but I can't figure out what controls its number of Hit Points, what makes it speed up when hit, or what determines what it can be hurt by (of these three things, what controls the number of HP is the most important). I would really appreciate it if someone would look into that sprite to see what controls the things I mentioned in the previous sentence. If someone does help me out with this, then note that the Thwomp Boss I'm using is the one submitted by dahnamics, not yoshicookiezeus.

Also, I should update the .txt file in my files that mentions all the glitches with the Yoshi Abilities patches, as I have found a few more minor glitches.

Like I said I probably should have done in the previous post, I updated the Yoshi Abilities Glitches .txt file, so that it mentions more glitches than before. I had to put it in a .zip file this time, since I wasn't able to fix the weird spacing in it (when you view it from my files, anyway).

Also, Jimmy52905 told me, in the PM that he sent me after I sent him a PM letting him know that I updated that .txt file, that he has fixed around 8 of the glitches with the Yoshi Abilities patches, which is great (though he didn't say which specific glitches he fixed. He did tell me about a glitch I didn't know about, though. It turns out that Yoshi is unable to break turn blocks if he has something in his mouth). He also mentioned that Yoshi will no longer be able to hold things in his hands in the fixed version of these patches, which is fine by me, though it does mean two things:

- I won't be able to design puzzles that require the player to carry two items at the same time (one in Yoshi's mouth and one in Yoshi's hands).
- I won't be able to use the Key Float idea from MSQ in YSQ, where I put a carry-able sprite near the start of most water levels so that the player can swim faster. Because of this, I will try to make my water levels have interesting gimmicks/themes, and I will try to find a way to make Yoshi swim faster, so that they don't become boring (or at least not get boring as quickly).

Also, after the playtesters finish playtesting YSQ (as far as I know, none of the playtesters have finished yet), I think I will wait a while before submitting it. The reason for this is so that I can make improvements to YSQ (based on what the playtesters tell me needs to be improved) and to give Jimmy52905 more time to fix the patches (not that I'm giving him a time limit or anything. Sometime after the playtesters finish playtesting YSQ, I will submit the hack to my file bin so others can play it if Jimmy52905 takes a while to fix the patches, as I do not want to keep people waiting too long to play YSQ. After he fixes those patches, I will use them and then submit a new version of YSQ to the hack section instead of my file bin, so that others can play YSQ without having to deal with many of the glitches caused by the custom ASM).

Hey guys, I've got a couple of things to say regarding YSQ:

- So far, none of the playtesters have finished playtesting YSQ so far (though one of them told me that he had one exit left to find, so one of them is almost done). Also, like I said previously, Corruptendo told me that he wasn't able to playtest YSQ, so now there are four people playtesting YSQ.

- Lately, I've been visiting a site called "The Spriters Resource". Thanks to that site, I've been able to add things to YSQ that I would have otherwise been unable to add. Of course, like with downloading stuff from the graphics section on this site, I'm giving credit to the people over on The Spriters Resource for the graphics they ripped.

- I've thought about two songs I would like to use in YSQ that haven't been ported yet. The first one is the Second Smithy battle song from Super Mario RPG (I want to use that as the final boss theme), while the other one is the City Zone song from the SNES version of Faceball 2000 (I want to use that song in a city themed level). While I doubt that anyone is going to port either of these songs, I figured I would throw that out there, so others will know what I was planning on using. Also, since Faceball 2000 is kind of obscure (I think), most of you are probably not going to know about the song I'm talking about, so here is a link to an .spc that I have of that song: Link.

- I've come up with a few more level ideas that I will implement into YSQ in the final version. One of them makes use of the Yoshi sprite (as in, the Yoshi you can ride), though I'm not going to say what the gimmick is. Another gimmick I thought of recently:

I want you guys to guess what I thought up this time. (Of course, you could always look at the name of the picture if you need a hint...). Of course, the level shown in the screenshot is a beta, so it will change a little from what's shown, but the basic idea is present. This level is only going to appear in the final version.

That's all I have to say right now.

You know what? I might as well talk about the level I mentioned in the previous post rather than having people guess what the gimmick is.

The level is called "Yoshi Theater" (which is also the name I gave to the picture). The idea for this level is that, Yoshi passes by a movie theater, and decides to take a break from his quest to go see a movie. As soon as Yoshi enters the theater, instead of controlling Yoshi, you control the Yoshi in the movie. So basically, you play as the Yoshi in the movie (which is called "Yoshi's Quest"), who is on a quest to rescue an egg that was stolen from him (why does this sound familiar?), while the Yoshi you normally play as in all the other levels watches. Of course, this level is currently a beta so there are a few things I would like to imple....

Oops! Sorry, Yoshi. I didn't think I was talking that loudly. I will take my conversation out of the theater, so you can watch the movie in peace.

*walks out of the theater*

Alrighty, what was I saying before? ... Oh yeah! So, anyway, I plan on implementing a few things in this level after I submit the next demo, like making it so Yoshi (the one watching the movie) gives a disappointed look at the player (kind of like the one Yoshi just gave me for talking too loudly during the movie) for letting the Yoshi in the movie die, and making the status bar invisible. I also want to make it look more like a movie, by adding in a part that displays the title of the movie, as well as one for the credits. After the movie ends, you regain control of the Yoshi that was watching the movie, and you will be able to get to the exit. Interesting idea for a level, isn't it? Of course, there are a few limitations, but I think I can work around a few of them.

Wow! You can add some SFX like music.
Have to say that's a pretty cool idea. (The Level's looking pretty good so far also). Sounds pretty unique if you ask me.

Well...I'll be quite now so Yoshi can watch his movie in peace -_-

Hey, thanks guys. I find the idea behind Yoshi Theater interesting, as well. I honestly don't know how I got this idea, though (not that that is a big deal or anything. Some of my best ideas came from nowhere, such as Yoshi Cavern in MSQ).

Also, I'm starting to get a little impatient waiting for the playtesters to finish playtesting YSQ. You do know that the longer you guys take, the longer everyone else has to wait before they can play YSQ themselves, right? If you guys have been busy lately, I can understand that, but please don't take too long to finish playtesting. If any of you guys can't figure something out in YSQ, you can always ask me, and I'll help out. Also, why is it that I had to send PMs to the playtesters having to remind them to give me a idea of where they are at in YSQ? If you received a PM titled "Reminder", that's not good. I already had to send two reminder PMs today to two people.

As for updates to YSQ, I haven't really done much, as I am still waiting for the playtesters to finish. I did make one minor change, and I plan on making another one. The change I plan on making is changing the graphics for the food items in Fattening Plains. The minor change I made was that I changed the sound that plays on the "Nintendo Presents" screen. Take a guess which one I picked. Yeah, that's right, I picked...............................the Blargg roar sound! Nah, I'm just kidding, I picked the sound that plays when Mario gets on Yoshi.

......

Oh! Sorry, yeah, I've been (cough) a bit busy with stuff (I hate writing papers), and whenever I do get around to playing the hack, I tend to get quickly frustrated and not end up playing much more then one or two levels... I'll try to get done by next Sunday. :/

Anyways, that theater level looks really really cool. It would be neat if you could be able to change the Yoshi in the movie (not the normal player) to be a different color then green. :D
Good fucking bye.
Ok, then.

Also, that sounds like a pretty good idea for Yoshi Theater. However, when I tried to change Mario's colors for the second part of Yoshi Cavern Escape in MSQ, I wasn't able to do that because some of Mario's colors didn't change, even after I edited them. Wasn't there a patch that allows me to edit the colors used by the player or something?

Also, before I forget, I wonder how Jimmy52905 is doing with the Yoshi Abilities patches. It's been almost 2 weeks since he last told me about his progress with fixing those patches. Of course, I should mention that not every glitch I pointed out in "Yoshi Abilities Glitches.txt" needs to be fixed. The glitches related to non-essential sprites/objects like the P-balloon and the climbing net aren't really necessary to fix, for example. I pointed them out in the .txt file because they are, well, glitches caused by the Yoshi Abilities patches, though it's up to Jimmy52905 if he wants to fix those kind of glitches.

I got a wonderhul idea. You can make a snap shot of all of the poses in YY chr and makes it one file. Then rip it but setting the green colors as the 3 colors after the black outline color.
Sorry if I got to this mess, I was so busy.

I'm absolutely sure it is possible, just... Not how, because I don't hack myself.

(no I don't mean hack MYSELF if you had that crazy thought in your head)
Good fucking bye.

Do you mean that I should export Yoshi's graphics, edit the colors and then re-insert them? If that's the case, it's not going to work for two reasons:

- The effect will apply to all levels, not just one.
- The palette of everything that uses the first few colors in palette 8 will be messed up.

Apology accepted (same thing for you GoldenSonic15. I forgot to mention that earlier).

Also, for the past few days, I've been (among other things) drawing Yoshis and uploading them to my DeviantArt account, so that I don't get impatient while waiting for the playtesters to finish playtesting. Now, what does this have to do with YSQ? Well, today, I uploaded four pictures that are based off of scenes from YSQ, that anyone who has been following this thread will recognize (and has played V1.0 of YSQ). I can link to them here if anyone wants to see them. Think of it like concept art, except that it was drawn after the concept was implemented into the game.
