This is a bit of a show-off for the hack i'm working on!
Some screenshots!

Title Screen!

One of the levels!

Wadda ya Guys Think?

You're using that tileset? Ugh, I think it would be better if you ripped GHZ yourself. That one has got quite some problems.

Aside from that, it looks good. Consider using parallax scrolling on your background, I know there was a tool released for it some time ago.

It is a custom sprite I used, the uploader mentioned that it was still a bit buggy, hope that answered your question lol
Thanks for the comments all. I'm going to try by best and fiddle with the gradient to see if I can make it a tad less bright.

While that effect is pretty cool, that's not exactly what I had in mind. See the rising red sparks in this video? That's what I mean.

Thanks!

Also, screenshot of the first world.

Please note that there will be a change in graphics as soon as I figure out how to use them.
soundcloud / bandcamp / twitter / buy/stream my EP / buy my touhou music / buy my NEW album!!!
@Mario's Hat: I liked the level design, and the "rolling" question blocks. Also, the Adventures of Lolo's Main Theme fits only with Grassland Bonus levels, not Sky Bonus levels. Keep the work up!

@MarioStarLuigi: The sub-map is simple, but I liked it. Just put some more decorations and a custom palette.
I'm trying to make a Christmas like level, so I mixed two of my Christmas graphics sets:

Thoughts? I know, style clash, and I need to fix part of the background, since I re ripped it to save a single file worth of ExGFX space, but it might go well with the Christmas music I found.

As for Mario's Nightmare Quest? Well, it's currently on Fusion Gameworks, ROM Hacking.net or the GCN at the moment.
The foreground itself is atrocious, if I was you I wouldn't use it at all, and the background makes the status bar nearly impossible to read.
Although the background itself is nice, I wonder why those dark-cyan spots are at the bottom of the clouds, that looks kind of weird, and, as you said, horrible style clash with a horrible foreground.

The foreground is actually on the site, and straight out of the original game:

Carol used a version as well, does that mean it looks mediocre in Twinbee, Brutal Mario and Scarlet Devil Mario 2?

I know there's style clash, but keep in mind I have what, two slots left for a foreground? I'm not sure a physically complex foreground would fit in that and two palette rows.

The status bar thing is much easier to read when moving. You see, it's white, hence works... poorly in still screenshots of levels where the background is generally light.

But its readable in game, because it moves with the screen.

But foreground recommendations? Even a game name would be awesome, because I can rip graphics myself.

Edit: The cyan spots? If you mean in the clouds, probably a mistake on my part. I had to rip the background in two parts and assemble it myself. That should be fixable.

Just going ahead to say that just because Carol or any other holy-fuck-awesome hacker used certain graphics doesn't make them any prettier. Even if it's from an original commercial game, they can look ugly. So yes, it does mean exactly that.

Yes, that it's from a game and is used somewhere else doesn't affect its quality. (On that note, basically everything in Scarlet Devil Mario is horrible)

You don't need a complex and palette consuming foreground, the majority of foregrounds that exist out there would be better than this horrible thing.
I've seen your post in the "what x should I use" thread, though, so it's good to see you agree at least a little bit and are changing it.

This is totally off-topic, but seeing how the rest of this post is on, I'll just squeeze this here:

So you're expecting the player to constantly move the camera to see the status bar?
That's a really bad gameplay decision.

So you want the player to not move while playing a level? Amazing. Also, it's not like you're going to be looking at the status bar that much unless you're paranoid about points or something.
Good fucking bye.

Fair enough. It'll be changed anyway.

Yeah. Anyone with suggestions for an ice like foreground, tell me. I'm also debating whether to change the music from a Kirby's Adventure theme to a Christmas song I had lying around.

It's readable in most levels, because most levels have fairly dark backgrounds and foregrounds. It just led to problems here because it's the first graphic set I'm using which is arguably not dark and semi gothic themed and hence has a light coloured background.

It's a lot easier reading it when the background is either a dark castle wall, a dark sky or outer space like in most levels.

It also keeps most of palette 0 and 1 free for custom palettes, allowing for backgrounds like this:

http://bin.smwcentral.net/u/10295/smithybg.png

(ignore status bar, that's the result of using it on a test hack with a default style status bar and not the custom edited one).

Never the less, if all fails, I can find a different font for the status bar, which has an outline. Or rip/make one.

Thanks for the advice.

Other way around. It's visible in most levels though.

Way to completely manage to take something out of context. Anything that obscures the status bar isn't a good idea to have. TYhere's also the matter of how many coins, lives, Yoshi Coins you might have at the time.

A level for a contest on the german hacking site.

As you see you can switch between stone throwing pipes and solid Blocks with the help of the On/Off switch. Also later in the levels there are blocks that will act like the exact opposite.

And also here is my first try with layer 2 levels.
