"24 Hour SMW" was an idea proposed by Kieran to the rest of the staff. Apparently this is quite successful on other forums (though for things other than SMW hacking of course), so we figured it would be worth trying here.

The idea behind it is that I will give you a specialized theme (not too specific; you'll have some leeway) and you'll have to design a level/area matching it. The catch is, of course, that you only have 24 hours to do so. You'll need to play your cards smartly and not over-exert yourself. A good way to win this one would be to focus on something like a 10-15 screen area which is very focused and well made (unless you really think you can do something more in the allocated time limit). Please post your submissions in the other stickied thread.

Restrictions? There are none, but keep in mind if you're going to spend six hours coding an ASM gimmick or writing a song, you won't have time for your level. Be cautious and choose right away whether you want to work with vanilla resources or try for something a little more flashy.

Here is the theme. The final time for submissions will be tomorrow morning at 11:00 EST:

Pretend Bowser's Castle had a ninth door. Design what you think this room would look like. Keep in mind that each of the other doors focused on specialized ideas, so it might be wise to pick a concept and stick with it. Again, if you are a wise designer, this should not take you very long at all.

I would love to see those people who go "well I'm not good enough, so I won't win" and even non-hackers try their hand at this. The only thing being judged is the level design itself (simply because it would be impossible to judge much else that a regular level contest would have), so if someone brings forth a great vanilla level and a subpar chocolate level, the nod will go to the vanilla level.

Good luck, and if you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask. If this turns out to be successful, we might make it a rather common thing.
Oh man, I know these contests well! I'm gonna join!

Well, this seems cool, i should give it a go. I hope i can finish in time..
You, what do you own the world? How do you own disorder, disorder?
Now, somewhere between the sacred silence, sacred silence and sleep.
Somewhere between the sacred silence and sleep.
Disorder, disorder, disorder.

Hmmm. Not what I expected, but I have a few ideas in mind...
Ooh, this sounds interesting! One question, though: Are we allowed to use the original Bowser's Castle choice rooms as an "intro" to our level, since we're designing a "What If?" 9th door?
<Adam> I feel like smwc is a prostitute now, because we put up a porn ad for money
Are we supposed to make an actual ninth door in the already existing level? Or do we just make another level and title it "The Ninth Door"?
24 HOURS?! OH SHIT! Better get started!
Are chocolate levels favoured over vanilla levels?
Count me in dudes!#w{=)}

But im going for 18 holes today....FUCK!#w{>=(}
Later.
This is impossible for me. Oh well, there's always next contest.

So, no. The only thing being judged is the design itself.

And here I am in a level design slump...

Time for a grand slam!
Oh, it is so on.

You can do it however you like, really.

That really depends on the quality of the chocolate level. If someone manages to code a really cool ASM gimmick that makes their area a complete blast to play, it might have a good chance.
I think it's weird how you'd consider a 9th door in Bowser's castle to be any longer than 5 screens.

I think it prudent to mention I've been working on templates for vanilla spritesets and tilesets, which you're free to use for this contest (?). They're still very WIP, but the latest version (more recent than the one in my signature right now) is here. Please forgive the glitchy graphics tiles all over the place- they're there to help me decide what Map16 tiles to add/draw to round out the templates.

Final question: Any prizes for winning besides a huge ego boost?

I'm not particularly comparing this door to the other eight. The "what if Bowser had a ninth door" comment is merely to set things in perspective and lay the cards on the table.

..though making the level feel more like something out of SMW might be advantageous...

JDC: Yeah, there will likely be a prize.
Overworld and Title screen and all this stuff doesn't get judged,right?
Seems pretty fun. I'll enter.
