126: Frostflow Freezer - Jimmy

Complete

This level is quite awesome. I found some weird issues:

In ZSNES, in the ice cave, when Mario dies, the frozen/unfrozen water flickers for a spit second. I caught the moment:

The next thing is that Piranha plants are behind the BG, making a certain part of the cave cheap. The one with less room to move.

This glitch I found twice:

This happened, when Mario already entered the door.

Same thing, exvept, when Mario had already entered the pipe.
Yeah I honestly have no clue what causing the weird palette flashing in the second room. I figured that since it only happens a short amount of time it's not that big of a deal. Oh well.

0: You should have a powerup in the beginning, both for fairness and so it's actually possible for players to get the first smwcoin without having to bring in a powerup from another stage.

7, top: You need these turn blocks to jump to the left, so don't make them breakable. Or at least, not the leftmost ones.

E, top: Sprite overload causes this falling platform to disappear- not good.

It was really nice to see both of these mechanics, but I think you need to work on the configuration a little. First of all, what's with this "you can't move while jumping" nonsense? This is Super Mario World, not Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts! I also can't help but feel that the skates travel a tad too fast- of course, if you modify that, you might also have to modify the speed of the snowball.

I also don't think you introduce the skates very well. Immediately you're supposed to do some precise jumping at risk of death and then avoid a kicked shell in a cramped corridor...and the first powerup is after all of that. You also need almost perfect timing for a couple of setups in the snowball section, but I didn't feel prepared until I had died several times and finally gotten used to the controls. Try to ease the transition.

It'd also be nice if you had some hills- it's all ice and fairly flat here. I think it would help evoke that YI ski feeling you're going for.

That's actually sort of something I can't fix. Due to the way I coded it, Mario speeds up in the direction that he's traveling, and since he's rapidly changing directions as he spin jumps, his speed is pretty much constant and can't change until he lands. I decided to keep it that way though, I figured it would be more of a challenge that way, and also have it feel a bit more realistic overall.

Again, that was intentional to make it more challenging. I mean this is World 7 after all. :P

IMO the kicked shell isn't actually that hard to avoid, then again I designed the level so I guess it's sort of biased since I already know what to expect or something. Eh.

I think I'm actually going to keep it the way it is. I mean, the level is supposed to be difficult, it's purposefully designed so that the average player WON'T get it on the first try. A lot of games are like that; it's meant to be difficult, but at the same time fun and challenging. I'm personally very satisfied with the design the way it is now, but if other people don't seem to like it either then I'll consider changing it.

Well I figured that it would look pretty unnatural to be skating up and down large hills of snow. Especially considering ice skating is typically done on..well..ice. :P

Wow! Pretty amazing use of SMW custom elements. I think the snow ball is something like YI chomper, right?
I think you can release those gimmicks.
Dude, if you're just going to come into these threads and ask people to release their stuff, don't bother. We're actually trying to get a functional collab going here, and unless you're going to offer constructive feedback, don't even bother posting.

Thanks.

You know, I really cherish responses like these. Silly me, forgetting what World you're designing for~ I'm definitely not trying to imply that it might be a bit too difficult despite it being in World 7. Oh no.

Mario platformers, for instance? Personally I think players should have a fair chance the first time around *shrug*

I honestly felt like the level was pretty fair overall for the most part, I mean, it's still possible to get through the level on the first run, just very difficult. This level requires the player to be a bit more cautious than they usually are, but it's meant to be hell on players who are expecting that they can just simply get through the level without thinking things through on how they avoid the obstacles presented to them throughout the level. If it REALLY bothers people though I may try and change things up a little bit.

edit: Also yes Luigi, I CAN release these gimmicks. That doesn't mean that I will.

I think this is an SMWCP coin.
shit i had an entire post written about this level but chrome killed it. damn

Well, this level has gotten improvements regarding the ice skating section and the big snowball. But Falconpunch is still working on a new background which will also be used in Chilly Colors.

To add more substance to this post, here's a gif showing improved aesthetics for the cave section.
