World 9 Final Boss: Norveg - Deeke/Eevee (GFX), anonimzwx/Von Fahrenheit (ASM)

Link Thread Closed

Complete

Some Random ideas:
First phase:
He's inside a big robot, that is too high for Mario to reach. On the screens where you fight him there are 5 switches you must press (While dodging his attacks) So small platforms materialize and then you can reach and hit him.
Attacks:
-The robot punches the ground making a wave, if mario is hit by the wave he get stunned.
-He hits the wall and rocks fall.
-He flies off screen and the come flying at a high speed.
-Launch a wave of misiles, one straight, and one going up and down.
-Launch 3 bombs (Bombs, not bob-ombs)

Second phase:
He get his jetpack and runs, mario then find a koopa shell and starts to ride it. Mario need to follow Norveg into some plataforming screens.
Attacks:
-Throw a molotov that make 5 pillars of flames to appear.
-Throw bouncing bombs.

That's what i have for now, going to think on another phases soon.

After reading through this thread, I see two main ideas for the final level: splintering the level into world-themed sections; and a regular 'long and epic' kind of level. These are neat ideas, yes, but how about something really out there?

When Mario enters the factory, he sees a door he can break open; this sets the stage for pushing through the factory proper, blasting through screens of machinery, enemies, obstacles, and whatnot. But, there is another option to the level. Players with a good eye might spot the pipe hidden behind a pile of rubble near the factory entrance; this pipe allows Mario to sneak through the factory's sewer and ventilation system.

This allows for four main themes to the final level. In the main factory, we can have machine/electrical obstacles interspersed with an element (probably fire). In the 'sleuthing' path, we can have cave/sewer and wind.

This also allows for two different styles of level in the same level. The main factory would be your stereotypical 'final' level, complete with enemies, tricky platforming, powerups, and the stuff that one would find in SMW castle and fortress levels. The 'sleuthing' option could provide an entirely different experience, focusing more on keys, hidden traps, secret passages, and a more puzzle-like feel.

Ultimately, the final boss, whatever that turns out to be, would be the same regardless of what route one takes. I would also say that the routes can be of equal difficulty but for completely different reasons (enemies versus strategy).

What do you guys think?
The level is actually secretly an autoplying level that is timed to the song 'Bohemian Rhapsody'. It's just really really hard if you try to play it 'normaly' without this realisation.

. . .What?
Hmm. . . not sure what to say so I'll just stop talking. . .

That idea is so silly it overflows into pure awesome.
The only problem is how to get Mario started. Letting him move at the start is unusual, and I can't think of any other way to do it.

Make him start out on a non-steep downward slope, perhaps? That way all the player needs to do to start the process is press down.

Also, I haven't really followed this discussion thoroughly, so there's nothing else I can contribute to it. Bleh.

You aren't really going with that right

I'm kind of baffled why it was even talked about for more than two posts.

Let's get this back on track.
Haha, yeah, of course I was joking. This game is all about custom content, after all. It has to be timed to a custome piece of music.

Hey, here's an idea - for one of the phases or whatnot, make it an RPG style fight with menus and everything. There's a japanese hack (The Mario I think..? Maybe it was :P:P:P ...) attempted it but it never went anywhere, and like all japanese asm hack it never was part of a 'real', completed game.
Don't you think that's going a bit too far Raocow? I mean, if we did that with one boss, then we'd have to do it for all of them. It'd be pretty wierd to play the hack and after about 5 bosses, you come up against one that has a totally different thing about it...

Unlike Japanese hacks, this isn't throwing ASM everywhere in senseless places. I'm not saying all Jap hacks do that, just the ones I know.

Hi, my name is Kirby Super Star. It's nice to meet you. Have you met my friend the Underchomp by the way? I heard he was a big hit in Super Paper Mario.

(really though, some sort of computerized battle like that might be neat.)
Oh! I just had a neat idea! Going off that idea, why not have the battle be a representation of Mario trying to hack into the "brain" of the robot? All your attacks would thus be "commands" to destroy the computer. Things like "Virus", "Malware", "Trojan", or "Paradox" (yes, I went there!) for attacking. Perhaps a puzzle could be incorporated into it, where if you use certain attacks in a certain order, you deal extra damage? (It'd have to come with a drawback, though!) Then, after you destroy the "brain", Norveg catches you and you have to fight him.

Sound good?

That is actually a hilarious idea. Mario could fight smaller sub-bosses representative of actual antivirus programs. Starting with easily-killed freeware programs like Norton or avast! and progressing to expensive anti-malware programs, the minibosses become more difficult. After all the programs are defeated, you warp to a screen modeled after a desktop; you use a mouse (the cursor+blocks patch could do this) to click Turn Off Computer, thus ending the fight and letting you handle Norveg himself.

I don't know...that might be too complex, but it would be a ton of fun.
We should save that for the final boss of the final level of World 9.

Look at all that we have for the final boss already, if we were to include more phases etc. it would just be overkill. Besides, a computer themed boss would also fit two of the World 9 level themes. What would it look like though? Windows 7, Windows XP, Windows Vista, or is Norveg old fashion and uses Windows ME?

If I'm not mistaken, S.N.N. will post another thread for working on the final level of World 9, we should continue this idea in that thread.

I think that we have a solid boss idea right now and we shouldn't stray too far off from it.

I agree with everything Kojeco said. Look at Sonic 4. The final boss for that game was overkill because it was way too long. (There were about 6 parts to that battle.) While I agree that it should be epic and whatnot, it shouldn't be so long that it gets tiresome/boring like it did in Sonic 4.

Honestly, I was imagining the computer thing as being the first phase of the final boss, and then you fight Norveg. I don't think 3 forms is too much...do you?

We also have Sonniku's tank boss before that. The phases in order would then be:
1. Tank Boss
2. Computer Boss
3. Giant Norveg Robot (That you must deactivate)
4. Smaller Robot (which has 4 of his own forms)
5. Norveg with his jet-pack and mechanical cane
6. Chasing Norveg out of the collapsing factory using jet-packs.

That's 6 phases, not including the 4 forms of the smaller robot. Altogether it would be 9 phases, which isn't just a complete bore after a while, but would also probably be a pain in the butt to code.

Save the computer boss for World 9, it would fit there quite well. If we still want to reduce the number of phases, we can cut out the 6th phase of chasing Norveg out of his own factory. That would keep us at 4 phases, which is a lot better than 6. If we STILL want to reduce it, we can keep the amount of forms the smaller robot has at 2. (for the first three hitpoints he is on the ground, the final one he is in the air)

Uh, no. The computer boss would be PART of the giant robot- at the end of it! Also, where did you hear that the robot that Norveg attacks you in would have four forms? I've been reading this thread, and all I heard about it was that it would have at most 2 forms, and then you immediately get to attacking Norveg. :/ No "Norveg attacks you, you attack him for a while, then escape", but "Destroy his machine, Norveg attacks with very dangerous attacks, one hit defeats him". That's what I heard.

...but I DID forget about the tank boss.

EDIT: ...............................You're using your SUGGESTIONS as "we're definitely doing this"? What.

The computer idea is good, but I agree with the others in that it would probably be better in world 9 (especially since world 9 technically ends with a bunch of "virtual" levels anyway). I'd rather stick with the ideas we've been rolling with thus far - that is, going inside the giant machine and then fighting a few phases of Norveg at the top.
