YI hacking FAQ v2 (updated for 2018) - Ask questions here!

None of the sprite sets contain the sprites I need. What can I do?

The sprite sets themselves are editable... it may not always be possible to create a working sprite set for any given collection of enemies, but it does add more possibilities.

(Note: I would add more detail, but I've never personally experimented with editing sprite sets...)

Does anyone know how to do this? Or at least can someone link me to a post that explains how?
I should get a new layout.

Probably won't, though.
Not to sound big-headed or anything, but is there any chance of Y.I.P.E.S. or the Sprite Set Editor making their way into the FAQ? Don't replace the existing information (since it could still be useful), but noting that easier alternatives exist could prove useful.
I should get a new layout.

Probably won't, though.
Of course. It's very important for me for the FAQ to be updated with any new YI-hacking-related developments.

Thank you. #w{=)} Also, on an unrelated note, does anyone know if tehaxor69 was ever planning on releasing the tool he described here? Because I was considering doing it myself and releasing it with a title screen tilemap editor I'm working on if he wasn't going to (if I can figure it out; why there are 48 entries for Yoshi I'm not sure...). I know he's inactive, but I don't know if he ever said he'd be back to finish it or anything, so I figured I'd ask.

I don't know. He said he was going to make a tool for editing the title screen and world maps for both SNES and GBA versions (as well as decompressing the SMA3 graphics), but he has been inactive for over a month now...

I say just go ahead and create any tools you feel like creating.

(Title screen tilemap? Do you mean the logo, the island, or both?)

The logo is my top priority; if I can figure out how to create an editor for the island then it will be an added bonus.

So I tried building the title map editor and got a good chunk of the rendering out of the way Oh my god I hate Visual Studio's graphics rendering capabilities they can go die in a fire for all I care you have to jump through hoops just to get a few pixels drawn on the screen and it doesn't even have any 3D rendering functions built in gah, but I ran into one major issue that I overlooked:

Some objects are hardcoded like the Yoshi, Seagull, Volcano Smoke, Y-Flags, and ruble, but are still easy to edit.

Unless I can find where those are located, then this editor will be pretty much useless (I am still working on the logo editor, though, which should be finished soon), so does anyone know where I can find them?

I have a quick question. How do you fix layer priority in levels? When I enter pipes, Yoshi is always in back of stuff, like this:

Any help?
Weird, that nobody has answered, yet, but I must disappoint you B.B. Link. Either you must sacrifice the snow or the pipe. Level modes #8 and #F do not work with pipes. Another option would be to get the pipe away from any Layer 2 object.
Yeah, If you'r reluctant to get rid of the snow, use a door. They don't interfere with layer 3 backgrounds IIRC.

I've made my IPS patch and am testing it and the hack at the same time. There is one vital thing which I really need to change, and maybe one or two minor things which don't matter. If I change my ROM and then make a new patch, do I need to test the entire hack again? Or is it okay just to check one or two levels to make sure that the patch works? (Sorry if this is a stupid question, I really have no idea). Thanks.
It really doesn't matter too much, since nobody is going to kill you for a bad IPS, but it could be kind of embarrassing to proudly present a game, which does not work. Before uploading the IPS I would test if it generally works and then people, who play it might find things, but most IPSes usually work without any mistake. Don't worry too much about the IPS, it's no big deal.

Thank you YF. Yeah I would not want to present my game and then have the IPS not work. I will certainly test a couple of levels at least. Problem is my hack takes ages to complete so I don't really want to play the whole thing through again, that's all.
Can someone anwser how to get the allGFX file from ycompress?

I hope this handy-dandy program I made will help you:
Link deleted!
It said I need the .bin to continue to the next step, but I don't know where to get the .bin file?! Please help!
You must DECOMRPESS graphics first. When you decompress, you only need the ROM. COMPRESSING is writing the graphics back to the ROM.

Here's a better version of the application, this time with help section included:
YCompress Helper.exe
I can't open it and I get this error :

Gateway Timeout
The following error occurred:
Code
A DNS lookup error occurred because the request timed out during the lookup.

Tag (pre) was not closed.
Tag (div) was not closed.
That's weird. What exactly are you unable to open?
Is it the application itself or is the application unable to open the ROM or the .bin file? Otherwise, I can't tell you what's wrong, since I just added a few things to the program, nothing special. Or has that occurred in the older version, too?
How do I find out the pointers to the object and sprite data for the rooms? I plan to remake some levels in my hack and I want to port the ones to keep the same over to a new ROM.Free counters!
