112: Coaster Commotion - HuFlungDu, TLMB

Complete

Claimed by: HuFlungDu

World: 6
Exits: 1
Theme: Carnival
Music Options: 1, 2, 3, or compose your own.

Briefing: A fun fair styled level. Consider various ideas that might work in a carnival - a fun house, adventuring through game stands, a big top, a roller coaster, etc. It is highly advised that you communicate with the other carnival designers to share ideas and to make sure we don't end up with duplicates.
SNN's ear just fell off.
Working collaboratively with TLMB on this one. Roller coaster level, more info to come on that. Level name: "Coaster Calamity" (hope that's not too long. Haven't talked with TLMB about that yet, so it's subject to change).
Well, I thought I'd have a little Graphical update for everyone today:

It's a beta version of both the Cart and the tracks we'll level will be using for this level. The cart was made before the track, which would explain the unfitting styles of the 2. I honestly want to make the cart look like a penguin, then transform it into pseudo-3D the the tracks.

About the level name, if Coaster Calamity is too long, maybe we could name it RollerC Rampage?

<sarcasm>Where's my name on the thread title
I wonder what a HFD opcode would do in ASM...
Any particular reason why Luigi's riding in the cart instead of Mario?

I like the unique idea of using a penguin as the cart, I have to say. And while the tracks do look very nice, it doesn't look like their supports are aligned properly; it looks like you either need one more on the far side to balance the tracks out, or you need to move the supports to the center of the track. Still, very nice work so far.
I should get a new layout.

Probably won't, though.
Using a penguin as a cart is awesome.
Reminds me of that one minigame from Mario Party 2.
I agree, the supports do look a little odd because of the perspective, but the graphics are really nice.
Here's the song I volunteered to write for the level.

Tell me what you think?

Also, I put Kadyastar's letimotif in there on purpose. Let me know if that's a problem with anyone.
Check out my music!
Oh JEESH that's happy.
Violators will be prosecutedt to the full extent of the jam.
What if it was somewhat faster? I think it would fit more then.
Your layout has been removed.
Moose, that is very well done and quite true to my style. I very much approve of this.

Thanks Kadyastar!:D

I'm still waiting for HFD and TLMB to give me the OK to start porting it, though.

Naw. I think this is fast enough.
Check out my music!
Alright, finally got to listen to it. It's awesome, fits perfectly with what I was thinking. I sent it to TLMB, once he gets back to me I'll let you know.
I've been waiting for this gimmick since Brutal Mario, awesome!

That song is great too Moose, nice and energetic.
I think a post layout goes here somewhere...
Everything's better with penguins, isn't it?

Anyways, this level sounds like it's going to be really fun. :)

DARN STRAIGHT:

The cart is done graphically, I just need to draw about 3-4 frames for the wheels. Comments and Suggestion on how to make them better?

(I just fixed the purple shading right now on the 45 degree carts)
I wonder what a HFD opcode would do in ASM...
The penguins look bad with the flat shape. But i loved the idea, and the graphics are good, but you just need to work around the graphics a bit more.

Well, they're carts first and penguins second, so I'd say it's okay.

One idea for the wheels is to have them be drawn separately from the body of the coaster; that way you only need three or four wheel frames and one cart frame for each level of incline as opposed to three or four cart frames for each level of incline (which would naturally eat up graphics space quickly).

That's the plan. Just a few frames (2 would probably be enough, but 4 to be safe) for the wheels that we can move with the cart as it rotates.

Also: I think they look great for being cart, though actual penguins would be rounder, I think it's better like this.
Cross-posting:

"In all honesty, HFD and I haven't been able to move forward in our level progress as I'm currently waiting for HFD to finish up school. I rather not bother him with this project since it's finals for him (I think). Anyway, The main graphics are done (main graphics as in the ground interable with Mario, no decorations yet [feel free to suggest ideas of decorations for a roller coaster level]). I can't design the level (or in fact think of actual gimmicks/obstacles I would use) until I get to play around with HFD's finish Roller Coaster Sprite (which is going to act differently than an ordinary Mine cart sprite :O).

I was also thinking maybe I could add a small ordinary level portion before the actual gimmick of the level, like maybe 6 screens of normal design then comes the roller coaster level. The idea would be Mario needs to obtain some tickets before he could ride the roller coaster, so the railway operator says the best way is to steal it from young fair-goers. Complaints with said idea? Suggestions to make said Idea better?

Moose, if you read this, did you port the song yet?"

Mario is above such tactics! *Jumps over turnstile*

The idea of a ticketantalizing intro sounds good. You could even expand it into being the first half of the level if you wish, but really, whatever structure/composition works for you is fine.
