Well, yeah, that's why we'd use the Yin Yang orb instead. It looks like its projectiles have a tricky enough hitbox to pull it off nicely.
I should get a new layout.

Probably won't, though.
Why do fire bros (custom sprite 12) generate firebars? This is not intentional is it?

Because SNN inserted the original Fire Bro that came with Sprite Tool. Just use Sprite C (the actual Fire Bro) instead.

Updated available level list after looking through the Level List topic and included what SNN just said...

009: 1-Castle (Grass Castle)
00A: 2-1 (Swamp)
013: 3-2 (Eastern Shrine)
103: 4-Secret 3 (Oasis)
12F: 8-4 (Factory)

All one exit except for the castle, which is two.

Now that some levels have opened up, I've been contemplating whether or not I should actually give one a shot. And fortunate for me, something in World 2 opened up, which initially if I was going to take on a level, that was the only world that really interested me. Unfortunately, it's the first level in the world - which typically lend themselves as "world introduction" levels and I don't think the idea I have particularly qualifies as an introductory level, but we'll see.

Anyways, I don't necessarily want to throw my name in the hat unless some of you think my idea is worth a dang. My idea is basic platforming combined with sections consisting of a slow-river raft ride - this would be the main gimmick of the level. Obviously, the level would need to use Layer 2 Scrolling, thus forcing a layer 3 BG. I initially thought about reskinning and possibly tweaking Sprite 5E so I don't have to sacrifice a layer, but after drawing some prelim graphics I can pretty much say that's not going to happen, what with all the extra tiles.

So to go along with the idea, I drew a raft today:

Keep in mind that I consider myself a horrible pixel artist and that this is the first time I've ever drawn anything from scratch, nonetheless attempted (I've only ever ripped graphics in the past), so I'm expecting some pretty harsh criticism regarding style and shading - or that it just sucks. Also, for the moment, this is only using a single palette, so a couple of things aren't quite colored the way I've envisioned them (namely the fish).

To further spice up the rafting sections, I thought about including some sort of spotlight effect centered around the lantern - nothing that would hinder the level as in adding artificial difficulty, just something to give it a nice aesthetic in combination with the lantern - the darker areas would only be just that: darker, not blacked out. However, such a feature is far beyond my knowledge, so obviously I would need help if I decided to go with that route.

As far as graphics, I've been toying with LunarDrake's Swamp and Jungle tilesets as well as WYE's Forest tileset made specifically for SMWCP2 - just to try some things out.

So yea, if any of this sounds worthwhile and anyone thinks I should go ahead and give it a shot, then I guess I'll take the level. The biggest reason I have reservations though is because, like I said, it's the first level in the world and I don't think the idea is very fitting of the first level in. I know that probably sounds foolish, but hey, that's just me.

If, however, none of this sounds like a good idea, then I'll just continue forth with level testing.
The idea of a raft ride is indeed interesting. I haven't heard of anyone else doing that, so it might be worth seeing it implemented. You sound like you actually HAVE some good plans too, unlike certain people who signed up. Even if it's the first level, the map + level order isn't 100% finalized, so stuff may be moved around.

You're welcome to try, if you'd like. I'd love to see what you could cook up.

Welp, then it seems you haven't read my thread yet. :P (absolutely no problem with that, and true, it was updated a long time ago, I have been busy with other stuff in the past few weeks).

Anyways, I totally approve your level idea, Milk, I think you should go ahead and take the level. I really like the graphics you drew too (at least it's much better than I could draw, I'm sure).

I would have actually started the level earlier if I had had the graphics for the lantern boat I was planning. I think it's not a big problem if two levels had the same layer 2 boat/raft "gimmick". I really hope I can eventually get somebody to draw the lantern boat for my level, I think I'll go ahead and request them soon.

If he's willing to have it used for this, you can ask Sonikku about his raft sprite (which include interaction with other sprites, allowing them to ride the raft as well). The main drawbacks I recall from it is that it uses a lot of tiles and it will sink after a set number of screens.

He IS willing to let it be used for this, but he lost the code and wanted to remake the thing at some point (at least that's what he said a few weeks ago).
Your layout has been removed.
Well, it looks like there is some interest in this.

Yea, basically the same reason why I figured it would be best to forgo the sprite idea to begin with since it could potentially hinder additional sprite usage. But still, I can talk to Sonikku and see what can be worked with if that's a possibility. (I'd hate to rely on Layer 3 for BG's for that much of the level if it can be avoided.)

@Hadron: Crap, I completely forgot that you had a similar concept. Really, I took the idea from my own WIP hack that has never gone anywhere and decided to really try and expand on it - especially since it fits a swamp theme so well.

@SNN: If this is a problem, I can try and come up with something else. However, at the moment I don't have anything worthwhile as a backup plan. So, yea, keep the level open for someone else to claim if you feel that having two similar gimmicks like this that early on is unnecessary. Honestly, I don't want to claim a level if I don't have an idea going into it. Otherwise, I'll claim it.
Well, the worlds are split anyway, so it's likely people will only end up playing one or the other unless they're completionists (yours is in world 2, his is in world 3). I don't have much of a problem with the same gimmick twice as long as they're slightly different in nature. Perhaps you two could collaborate on how to make your rides different .. or something.

Fair enough. And after looking through Hadron's thread last night, it looks like I will have to rethink a few ideas I originally had brewing. Anyways, if I'm good to go, then I'll move all further thoughts over to the level's thread.
Sure, go for it. It's getting late, so I'll edit your name in in the morning if someone doesn't beat me to it.

I actually looked at GN's level idea, and since he gave up on the level, I would actually like to claim it. I guess I'll just carry on the idea of what he had, if I AM able to claim it.

I have a question for anyone working on levels for SMWCP, especially those working on Oriental-world levels.

Would any of you find any use for these sprites in your levels? I made them for C3, but I didn't finish in time. (it took me maybe...48 hours to finish them? Maybe more...) I'd love to see them used in SMWCP2, but there's two slight problems...

1: Would they even be useful?
2: The second is a Touhou reference... (The first isn't, although the graphics for the homing sprite ARE.)

So yeah.

I don't know how I could fit those into my level, but the one that shoots straight forward could easily work in an A2MT level. May I use it?
I mentioned this in notgoodwithusernames' level thread, but though I should bring it up here.

One particular tileset, specifically, the grass/factory in 1F6, doesn't look consistent with the other GFX. Largely because of the lack of outlines, but the shading looks a little off too. This as much as I can say, due to time constraints, but I just wanted to throw that out there.

A ton of hacking stuff (patches, music, sprites, etc.) was lost, but I was fortunate to back THAT up three days ago. Shivering Cinders work won't take long to recover, as I can just repatch v0.2 to a clean ROM to get a lot of the stuff back, though I'll need to re-rip Foop's FG and BG stuff.

Personal, non-hacking related stuff will be a bitch to search for, however.

Just now realized that I lost the BG I was making for the level as well. Well, ain't that a bitch- thankfully it shouldn't be difficult to re-rip.

I've actually asked Pheonix to redo that FG a little with outlines. I might have to mention that the shading needs to be toned down just a tad as well.

Shame, because I really quite like it on its own.
Well after not having my computer for 2 weeks or so, I finally got it back, fixed, and good as new. Good news! I still have all the graphics I made for the hack, and it doesn't look like anything was deleted (well, anything SMW related). When I got back on my laptop, I remembered that people didn't like how my Candy GFX was too simple due to the low amount of colours, so I decided to make a version 2 of it. Dunno if I should even post it here, but... Don't see any GFX showoff threads, so here it is:

Oh, and the older version for comparison:

Great to hear you've gotten your stuff back. That'll save MrDeePay the work of reripping some of the graphics (or in this case, the candy stuff).

Looking forward to seeing your continuation of the level.
