Mario's Strange Quest

Standard

As several of you know, I've been working on a hack called Mario's Strange Quest. Well, it's finally finished, and it has passed moderation (thanks, Hadron, for moderating the latest version). Mario's Strange Quest will not sweep you off you're feet with an epic storyline or an epic journey, but rather, it will get you laughing. Mario's Strange Quest is a joke hack, but unlike most joke hacks, this one will get you laughing at the weird obstacles, themes, etc. instead of at intentionally bad design choices. As for the story: Mario is embarking on this quest to rescue his friend, Yoshi's eggs from Bowser, who stole them for some reason. So, Mario goes on a bizarre journey to find those eggs. Yeah, maybe not the most original story, but I was focusing more on the humor than on the storyline. Now for some screenshots:

The Title Screen. Wait. Why is Mario jumping around a cemetery with blue waffles on the ground?

On this evil ride, getting sick is the least of your worries...

Who's bright idea was it to put in this many moons in this room?! Mario seems to agree with me.

Mario: Oh no! Why did that Yoshi eat so many cans of Eaty Petey's Meaty Beans? I better run for my life!

This level is like a burger patty. It got flipped.

Yoshi's diet: Fruit, koopas, Mario, ... wait. What?

Mario, the brave space traveler without a spacesuit.

If you want to download this hack, click the link in my signature. It's been a long, strange quest making this (pun intended), but it was worth it. If anyone has a question or is curious about something about this hack, feel free to ask.

Edit: Want to play this hack, but you want to see it before you download? Then watch an LP of it. There are several LPs of this hack done by various people. Click here to see my post where I link to every LP of MSQ I know about . Be aware that the current version of MSQ is V1.6, so watch the LPs of that version. The links to the LPs of older versions of MSQ are there for entertainment purposes or if you were curious about what the older versions of MSQ were like.

yoshifanatic, kudos to you! I've been following Mario's Strange Quest on and off during its development over the past few months, and I'm proud to say that you, kind sir, have succeeded in creating an extremely unique hack for the community. Sure, it's the same SMW story we've heard a billion times, but the way you pull off the gimmicks of every level is astounding!

I really can't wait to see more work from you. I'm currently making my way through World 6, at the 8-Bit Forest. However, I want to take this time to ask you something that I'm having some trouble with. The secret exit of that level leads to a Big Boo fight. I manage to hit him with all five blocks scattered around the battlefield, but he still doesn't go down! Were there supposed to be six blocks to fight him with? Or maybe that's just another one of the gimmicks, now that I think about it: you take a secret path hoping to find a new path, only to find yourself stuck in an eternal boss battle. I don't know for sure, but I'd like some help on what to do there.

Aside from that, I guess I could just continue on with the next level and see more of this awesome hack. Again, much thanks to you, yoshifanatic.
Whoa That Roller coaster stage looks pretty legit.

Congratz on finishing this. Defiantly can't wait to play this.

Thanks! For the most part, I enjoyed making this hack. It makes me happy when others are enjoying it. :) Who would of thought that this hack would turn out the way it did, especially considering this is my first hack (well,.. this is actually the seventh version of Mario's Strange Quest, but still).

Anyway, as for the Big Boo Boss fight, there is a gimmick to that fight. It is possible to beat the Big Boo, so it's not like I made it so Mario can get permanently stuck or anything. Judging from the fact that a few people have had some difficulty beating the Big Boo in 8-Bit Forest, I'd say I came up with a pretty clever gimmick for it.

Also, before I forget, this is a note to the mods: Could you delete the old version of Mario's Strange Quest? I don't see why anyone would want to play that version now that the final version is out. Thanks.

edit: Ninji'd.

Also, I would like to mention that I will occasionally share some info about this hack while I was making it, if anyone is interested. I'll talk about a variety of things, like beta elements, unused ideas, etc. There is quite a few interesting things about this hack that I haven't said yet in the old thread, so if anyone is interested, free to ask about these things.

Kay so I remember playing the demo so instead of picking up where I left off, (Just getting done with world 2) I erased my file and started over just in case I missed any changes.

Right now I happen to get past world 2 and may I say it's amazing so far. I've noticed changes through out the levels. The graphical stood you the most so far, and I'm a big fan of graphics. I notice the change in difficulty, which is actually a good thing for me, because I like challenging hacks (Sadly, I haven't played many)

Overall the game is totally worth playing. It's fun and enjoyable. Still stoked I'm actually playing the full version =P

Please Keep up the great work yoshifanatic XD

Quite a lot of songs, huh?

Edit: I just remembered, but I probably should mention the songs I used in previous versions, but were removed from the ROM for one reason or another (I'll say why they were removed from the ROM), plus another song that is in the ROM, but doesn't count towards the 81 songs:

- 22 - Big Boss (It's part of the complete YI Soundtrack) - removed because it was higher pitched than it was supposed to be and it stopped working shortly after it starts.
- Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past - Cave - removed because it causes bsnes to crash.
- Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages - Under the Sea - removed because it causes bsnes to crash.
- Synthsine Silence (this is the song that doesn't count towards the 81 songs in the ROM. All it is is synthsine1 modified so that it is completely silent. This is how I solved the static sound problem I was having with certain songs).

Ahaha...

Anyways, this is definitely one of the best, if not the best, first hacks I've ever seen. Really fun for the most part. Except for Beanbean Cave, but at least it's optional now unless you're a crazy completionist. :P
Good fucking bye.
You know, I've thought about something. I saw a video of someone playing my hack and having a lot of trouble beating Beanbean Cave, even with slowdown and savestates. I've decided to make a video of me playing through that level without savestates and slowdown to prove its doable. I'll even show a secret that not many people may find as well. I'll have to figure out how to make a video first, which shouldn't be too hard. I'll edit this post when I finish.

I've played almost everything in this hack and it's very interesting and great. :) There's definitely not enough replies in this thread, even though it's a full release and a great hack like this. People, more comments! :P Also, you have made the level (Beanbean cave) so you know where are the traps, blocks, and other things, so you know how to beat it. Anyway, Great work! :) If you need any help (or overworld :P) for your next hacks, I'm here. :)
...Huh?
Yeah, this is a pretty interesting hack. For anyone viewing this thread, don't be shy if you want to say something about the hack. I have quite a lot of different things I can talk about with this hack, so feel free to ask a question about the hack if you have any.

Also, you're probably right about that Teo17. I'm the one who made the level, so I know how to beat it (another reason why I have an easier time might be because I've gotten used to playing Super Mario World on a keyboard). Anyway, I uploaded a vidoe file called "MSQ.zmv" to my file bin (I couldn't upload it to youtube). It shows me playing through Beanbean Cave without getting hit, using slowdown, or using savestates. It also shows the secret room I put in Beanbean Cave. It was recorded on zsnes on the first try.

Cool, but you should be aware because any player can continue the game after your "video". So, you have practically revealed all the exits. I wish you more comments for your hack. 79 exits in 6 months... ... ... ...Practically something like 1 exit for 2,5 days. Also, you got at least 2 hack reviews in 1 week. I got one review in 5 months... Anyway, you aren't uploading .zmv files to youtube, you have to download mencoder and lame, go to the "dumping", and start dumping. Then it should create a "merged.avi" in the ZSNES folder. Hope it helps.
...Huh?
Darn it! I didn't know that! Well, I've deleted the video from my file bin (I still have the video on my computer, though). I'll see if I can convert it so that I can upload it to youtube. I'll link to the video once I manage to upload it.

Edit: Thanks for the tips, Teo17! I was able to upload the video to youtube. So, for those of you who struggled to beat Beanbean Cave, even with tools, watch me conquer the "impossible" stage without getting hit, using slowdown, or using savestates here. You will also see the secret room I hid in this level, since I realized a little while ago that not many people may be able to find this secret room.

Another edit: I almost forgot, but if any of you missed what I showed off at C3, here is a link to that page. These are the ExGFX from Mario's Strange Quest that I made available for download.

ummm. I already figured out how to do that, The Secret Exit. I do appreciate your help, though. If I forget how to convert .zmv files into .avi files, at least I'll know where to look.

Yeah, like I said in a previous post, I linked to a video of me playing through Beanbean Cave without getting hit, using slowdown, or using savestates. It's not a TAS either; it's me, sitting at my desk, playing that level using my keyboard to control Mario, on the first try (in fact, I can play through that level fairly easily, so what you see in that video is a regular playthrough of that level for me). When it comes to difficulty, I say Space Voyage is harder. I was able to get all five Yoshi Coins and beat the level without dying after the midpoint (or using savestates) on only three occasions.
