"Local" Graphics + Tileset Showoffs (Please re-read first post!)

Link Thread Closed
Yeah, pretty much all of the global sprites are in their "complete" forms as of now. If you'd like to help, you're welcome to draw FGs/BGs, as we're going to need some of them to get us started.

On the grassland topic: I like Pikerchu13's about the same as I like ChaoticFox's. I'd say they should both be sent to FP and then set up using his factory tileset + some sprites. Whichever ones clash less would be the ones used.

This is what i drew for the factory levels. Still not Finish with the BG, looks way to simple and not as shaded, but the FG is kind done.
What are those red tiles?

I believe those are windows.
It has potential, but as you said, the shading needs quite a bit of work. The actual design looks quite interesting though, and I look forward to seeing a polished version.
yeah like pikerchu13 said they're supposed to be windows with a kind of sunset red light coming through, notice how some are shattered...so yeah thats why the bg still needs some work. I'll work on then when i have the time.

@ChaoticFox: I just can't escape from cut off#w{:<} I'm pretty sure it's innate.

Welp, I managed to get this finished. I sent the the file to FirePhoenix, so let's see where it goes from here.

EDIT: 2dareduck, there's some cutoff above Mario's head as well.
Oh ho, that looks much better than what you posted yesterday (and even then, that didn't look bad at all either). I'll definitely be interested in seeing how those tilesets look together.
Pikerchu's set.

ChaoticFox's set.

Personally I like Pikerchu's set the best.
How many of these "local" graphics do we want to have established before level sign-ups start? Furthermore, what about people who do not wish to draw their graphics until after they for sure have a level in the ROM?

I'm asking because I'm in the latter crowd. Even though I would like to contribute graphics, I'd kinda' like to draw them for my own level first (not to mention get a good look at what other people have made before I start pumping out tilesets). I hope the time between level sign-ups and the deadline for submissions is long enough to accommodate this~
I'm not too concerned about having a ton of local graphics to start off with for the reasons Mineyl suggested - as in, most people want to draw their own, and/or want to get people to draw them once they have an idea of their level claim. Basically, all I'd really like to do is get the original tilesets redrawn (we now have one set), and a couple of other tilesets to get us started.

As for the images .. I honestly like both. Pikerchu's seems to fit a tad more though, but I'll definitely insert ChaoticFox's into the base ROM as ExGFX. I am sure someone could benefit greatly from that set - they are both well done.
I hope we are going to reject levels too if they have a poorly drawn/unfitting tileset drawn just for that level, at least until it has been improved, because otherwise some random people will draw some really bad graphics and pull the quality of the whole hack down.
Your layout has been removed.
After looking at the images, I can't help but point out my own error.

I forgot to draw the dirt for this one tile somehow.
leod: Simple solution which I've had in mind for a while, and that involves me wanting to see a preliminary screenshot of the graphics that are going to be used. If they're too realistic/too unfitting/suck, I'll kindly ask said person to use a different set.
ChaoticFox's set works pretty great with gray dirt for a mountain palette:

Reminds me of rocks with moss growing on them, I like that.
All right, thanks for clearing that up. :D

Also, to anyone really concerned over graphical clashes: you'd be amazed what colors can mask. I've seen plenty of things with graphics that would clash if inserted straight from their original contexts, but creative recoloring and palette use can go a long way toward making something fit in that would normally be out of place.

I'm not saying you can do this with everything, but it's something to think about and experiment with when comparing your graphics to those of others (try to be objective, however; bad graphics are bad graphics, after all).
I gotta say though, I am -really- loving that combination of graphics FP just showed. If we could pull that off with each level, we'd be golden.

Wishful thinking, of course...
Can anyone else please give criticism on my earlier post? Only one person responded :< (This one)
