VLDCDiscussion

Use this new thread for talking about the revised contest, showing off parts of your level or asking questions. Note that with these simplified rules, if you have to ask if something is allowed or not, the answer is probably "no".

-----

Judges for the contest have been chosen!

Airbourne Bubblun, Counterfeit, and marioVSshadow are your judges for the contest. Give them a congratulations if you want.

FUGGNUTZ, MajorasMask9, and tatanga, you three are alternates in the case a judge has to resign the job, or we get enough entries to consider forming a second team of judges. If you do not want to be an alternate judge, just let me know via PM so I can make a decision regarding a replacement.

To everyone else that applied, thank you for participating.
Sorry, FirePhoenix, to bother with another question, but:
Since we're not allowed to use patches and edit GFX, I'm wondering about the usage of Classic Piranha Plants in my level. I'm wanting to replace the flopping fish tile with a vine tile (and recolor it to fix the color). Just to make it clear to me, are we allowed to do just this GFX change to fix the Classic Piranha Plant?

Hey, new working rules! I like it them!

This: http://i.imgur.com/Ul0Uc.png is what I have already btw. It's basically something I started working on last year, and from what I see it follows this years rules.

[EDIT] I just noticed cut-off from a failed fix I did. Let's just change that later.

I'm assuming the judges won't count off for it, since you can't fix it without a patch (As far as I know). I remember Enker making a tutorial stating how to fix the piranha plant glitch by manually remapping the Cheep-Cheep GFX. This is disallowed too, right?
I like the new rules, I hope this will make people foccus more on the level design rather than adding nice looking GFX and custom music.

If you're worried about having points deducted for glitches and inconsistencies the original SMW included, don't worry. Since I'm disallowing Patches, judges shall not score down a level for something that cannot be fixed without a patch or hex edit.

I guess this means it doesn't mater if the player can get a "Time up" screen if they die, right? I'm planning to make time play an important role in my level, and some parts of the level will have the time limit set to 0.
Blind Devil: I can't allow you to fix it, I'm sorry. You'll just have to find a workaround.

Daxterspeed (sorry): Wow! That's all Layer 1/2 overlapping and other tilesets loaded in using BG2 and 3 right? Because if so I can't find anything there that would disqualify your level.

aj6666: Yeah, don't worry about the Time up glitch, it won't hurt your score.

You mean DaxterSpeed, correct?

Thank you!

The order is quite easy, Forest BG, Grassland, Forest FG and Cave FG. Add some map16 and palette work and you have this.

Also, I gotta recommend others to combine hills with clouds, together they make incredible looking backgrounds.
oh whoops sorry about the name, I still remember Alcaro and his shaymin avatar so somehow I automatically connect that avatar with his name. #w{O.O}
So, let me see if I got it right... mixed in graphics and such as seen in this example will be frowned upon, right?

Very well. Time to work on a new entry then, I guess.
The new rules are perfect! I'll start a new entry now, only this time I'll need to be even more creative, lovely!

@ Broozer: Yes, damn its creative tough!
I can't even tell how you made that background with the previous rules... (I'm curious though) Either way, no, set mixing like that would be not allowed.
Fuck Yeah! I love these rules! Sure i'll have to make some minor changes to my hack, but now everyone is in equal terms. I was getting sick of seeing people ask to do something stupid like making small edits to some gfx or adding some custom block/sprite/patch, when the rules already say not to do these. Thanks FirePhoenix.
Very glad to see this contest back to its roots! I am also thankful for the allowance of BG2/3, I don't think I could hack without them anymore, haha. Gonna have to adjust a few things, but I halted level progress after the notice, just in case of such changes. Ought to be easy to get back to where I was and get my entry all finished up!

Also, not intentionally trying to drop a stupid question here, but having ExGFX present in the ROM should be fine, right? That is, I won't have ta port everything over to a new one as long as I don't include the modded GFX file(s) in the level? Just trying not to get owned by a technicality, while being a little lazy about starting completely over!
These rules are honestly much better than the old one. There's no gray area, there's no confusion. It's just good, clean fun.

Seeing how I typically combine tilesets using BG2/3, this won't be a problem for me.
I'm kind of disappointed that I won't be able to use my own Custom Music, but hey, I can do without it.

I really hope this doesn't kill the competitive spirit of everyone, or else it won't be as satisfying when the winner is declared, in my eyes.

I'm really interested to see what you'll do this year. What you did last year was great.
Reading the rules, I see that the Custom Musics are not allowed and I've already inserted them on my level. So, if I just switch the musics to the original SMW musics, this will be allowed?
Oh man this is gonna be a fun contest.
woag.....

I'd think so. Hopefully FP's not that strict, though you could always just move to a new ROM (which is a lot easier for a vanilla level).

Heh, I had spent half an hour or so hunting tiles in different graphics files, though most of the tiles I used there came from GFX2D and GFX1D.

Thanks! I might actually make something out of it, I liked how it was turning out.

Anyway, while I am personally rather fond of the vanilla graphics merging rule, I think these 'new' rules will emphasize on the level design factor way more, which is ideal since this is the official level design contest after all. It's probably been a good idea bringing them back.
