Super Mario Bros. X - Better than Lunar Magic

Hello all. I use to be a frequent member of acmlm's board back in the day; I was known as "ghost", some may remember me, and some may not. Lol! I was banned for my views in a political discussion, and I'll admit I didn't handle it very mature... but that was then.

I played with the SMW editor known as Lunar Magic, and thought it was quite special. I have a demo hack called "Super Mario Element Worlds" on this site as I speak, it was made in 2005, since then I've grown much more as a level designer, compared to back in the day.

However, I found a new love that blows Lunar Magic out of the water:

With Super Mario Bros. X you can use an abundant resource of tile sets from all the original Mario platformers, and then some. It's not a rom hacking editor; it is its own engine, and it feels true to the mario series, so SMW veterans fear not, for it is smooth. To see how it runs, go here and see some of my work:

http://www.youtube.com/user/skyon84#p/c/DFD36C7FD268B371/6/glz3nSqse6M

Because it is NOT a rom, your are not as limited as you are hacking a rom file from SNES. You can use any and all kinds of music as long as its an MP3 file, the GFX customization is 100 times easier than using that Map16 something.... I forget what it was called.

The powerups consist of your traditional: Mushroom, Fire Flower, Leaf, and they've brought back the Tanooki Suit and the Hammer Suit, not to mention... they've also implemented the Ice Flower!

There are 8 Yoshi colors with different abilities. Green, Red, Blue, Yellow, Pink, Purple, Cyan, and Black!

The baddies range from SMB 1 goombas to SMB2 shyguys all the way to SMW rexes! There are so many baddies in this one! If you've dreamed of a fusing of all the original platformers, this is where its at!

And there is so much more than what I explained, you have to see for yourself at:

http://supermariobrothers.org/

I know I'll prolly get banned for this, but it was meant to be a one time deal anyway. I want to see some of your talents on SMBX!
I disagree, because frankly, you can do much of this stuff with Lunar Magic and such tools easily.

We'll soon be able to use any and all kinds of music with SMW, with the MSU1 or whatever functionality, allowing MP3 quality music in hacks too. Besides, there's not a lot wrong with the music ports here and on Japanese sites.

I'm not sure I'd say the GFX customisation would be easier, I seem to be using map16 and such perfectly fine. Heck, for default stuff, is 'F3, then F9', then assemble the background/foreground too hard?

There's a tool for custom power ups... two of them, one using extended sprites and one called PowerTool recently released at C3.

And all the custom enemies from other Mario games are easily found here or Japanese sites anyway.
For gaming news and Wario discussions, check out Gaming Reinvented and Wario Forums respectively.

As for Mario's Nightmare Quest? Well, it's currently on Fusion Gameworks, ROM Hacking.net or the GCN at the moment.
This doesn't belong in this forum, even if you are trying to get hacker's attention to this.

... Even though you pretty much joined to say "LM sux use SMBX it's much better blah blah blah", which really isn't a great idea. At all.

(also ever heard of asm?)
Good fucking bye.
Well, that does sound cool, but I don't see anything wrong with using the resources here. Plus, you're working with a real game, so there's the satisfaction you get after you make something finally work. (Besides, I can slip the hack I make onto an emulator on my PS2 or DS)
Edit: My postcount went up by 1!
Moving this thread to the Game Creation, because this isn't SMW hacking.

Wow! A lot of assumptions were made about me as a person. You know what they say about assuming... LOL! Never mind...

Actually I just wanted to share, but if you guys are happy with ASM, Map16, powertool, and all that, well that's cool too! :) Happy Hacking!
All we are saying is that compared to Lunar Magic, and other easy to use tools, we can make FAR supiriour levels, then the SMBX editor can, for example, the SMBX editor makes you place things in 32x32 tiles, however, Lunar Magic places 16x16 tiles. The SMBX editor won't allow you to overlap tiles, if you do, it won't allow you to place the tile, not to mention you can only place one of the same tile at a time to create a larger image, however, Lunar Magic, can overlap, and stretch tiles. The SMBX editor only has a few tilesets to choose from, mostly from Mario games, however, Lunar Magic can not only support a lot more tilesets, but you can get thousands of them, right here on the site, for easy, free download.

Take your pick.
Sir, I'm afraid Volke just kicked your ass without even saying much of anything. After thinking about what he just said, do you seriously think any of us give a shit about SMBX when we can do SO much more without it?

Think before you post stuff like this. Some people here don't appreciate this kind of stuff.

EDIT: So you think this is better than LM? Well then. Let me put this in simple English:

It.

Is.

NOT.

Why? You require admin privileges to even USE it. LM doesn't whatsoever. That's instant fail in my book. If LM doesn't require installation, something that's better than it shouldn't either, because that allows EVERYONE to use it, and you can't sell it because you'd get sued by Nintendo if they found out, though if you could you'd have a reason to make the program require admin privileges, but only if you actually sold it.

In short, if you want to make something better than LM, you have to remove all limits, and do something that actually tops it. This doesn't do any of the above.

Nice try.
Want to see some of my cool swords? Well, too bad, right now you only get to see one of them, and it's my avatar. Might set up some kind of gallery/portfolio at some point, though.
Wow, what's with all the hate? This dude came here to tell us about something we all might enjoy and you all jump on him? It's a mario engine creator, it doesn't actually compare to LM, but you all are making a big fuss about it. Settle down.
SMBX can't be compared to Lunar Magic in my opinion; SMBX is limited by the computer (which isn't that limited), and hacking SMW through Lunar Magic is limited by the Super NES.

Just a rough example: SMBX probably can use every single color as graphics and probably doesn't know of the palette system. It can exceed 256x224 as its screen size. SNES' palette system is already difficult to explain so I won't bother, and the screen size is limited to 256x224px (higher Y position on overscan, and some other fancy stuff at (pseudo-)hires). I won't compare MP3s to SPC-700 because we have MSU-1 now.

Just my point of view, although SMBX does look fun in a way... I'm just not too interested in it. :/ I find it more challenging to push SNES to its limit.

I have to admit guys, we're a SMW hacking site, not a LM site. lets give the guy a chance.

I think that everyone should be able to give their opinion, and frankly, if he likes SMBX better, well then thats fine with me. Personally, I would rather hack SMW, because there's more of a sense of accomplishment when you outsmart the game and make it do what it wasn't designed for. Plus, I beg to differ about Map16 being hard. It has always been easy for me. The only thing I find even close to hard is ASM, and its not like its hard to learn, I can make a simple block already.
Eh, sure. Why not? Kaizo hacking doesn't seem too ha-aaaaaaand I broke the ROM.

Yes.

In this thread, expressing opinions is fine, trying to "convert" people is not. Just a brief heads-up to everyone.

I'll repost this.
Hello engine 4.
Try it. (Still nit as good as LM though.)
Lunar Magic and SMBX editor has it's own pros and cons. So i'd say neither is better. They have their own limits and stuff and also with these editors, you can make fun levels with their own unique features.
Honestly, I hate how people do this. Surely SMBX is pretty cool, but nobody knows what right. Surely Lunar Magic gives you to ability to freaking hack SMW, but SMBX is just a fangame. Hacking a rom gives you experience into making real games. Some people just think making a few levels and stuff means that you made a game. Not true at all. Lunar Magic may be more complicated then SMBX, but it's more satisfying when you finished a rom hack with Lunar Magic.
Okay, let's compare the Best SMW hack (An SMW Central Production) with SMBX's best episode (The Invasion 2). Both look pretty inpressive at first, but to be honest. ASMWP outmatches TI2.

May be a dickish comment, but who cares? #w{=3}
Likes to hang out in the IRC channel.

Don't you think you're talking too fast? That's just your opion, but just because it's you favorite it doesn't mean it will be everyone's favorite, there is not a "best SMW hack" because everybody has different preferences.

About the editor, I guess I'm sticking with lunar magic, allthought by reading this it seems that SMBX has some cool features, but Lunar Magic can add a lot of custom stuff inclusing blocks and sprites; besides, I don't realy like to swap like that..
I might try this out..but I hate that you have to download it and that it takes forever to load.

Maybe it was a little unfair to say it is better, because its true that you can't make your customizable blocks and such on SMBX. They both have strong points and weak points.

Maybe I should've posted this thread as an alternative for those who want to get past the complexity of trying to learn ASM, this or that, and all of that; and just simply want to construct levels, because that's what we all dreamed about when we were younger, right?

Back in acmlm's 2005, 06 and such. It seemed everytime I posted screenshots of my work in LM, it was "Did you use ASM?" "Oh, its just another boring hack." All of this simply because I don't have the time to learn ASM on a forums website... I had a freakin' full time job in construction; that shit sucks! LOL!

Elitests, save your breath on telling me that I wasn't not intelligent enough to learn ASM, or maybe my hack had poor level design; I know how some of these "geniuses" on here love to make themselves feel better about life by saying elitest remarks as such. And if any of you in this thread are NOT the elitests that I'm talking about, then don't take offense, because I'm not talking about you. :)

When Pac, known as peter_ac back then, saw my hack, he thought I did a great job with my level design, of course that was when he released the SMB3 ExGFX based SMW hack, so I could make better "eye candy" so to speak. He offered to team up with me, but we never worked together due to us wanting different story line. Why am I telling you this? Not to ensure myself that I'm good, heh heh, I don't need approval, I know I make fun well-constucted levels today.

I wanted to learn ASM, but the elitests on acmlm's were some of the most rude people I have ever met. I was just a guy who wanted to make fun levels, but man... if you weren't Xkeeper (God-damn his soul), or anyone else that got handed any kind of moderation powers, oh my God... lookout for you are an inferior being! LOL!

Enough of my rant. With SMBX, I can simply just do what I always wanted to do: make a Mario Fan Game. I love it, and I wanted to share it with those that might be in their 20's, and are too busy with their jobs to pay their bills, and dont have time to try to learn ASM; they just want to simply want to design, and can skip a lot of this or that, and use a very generous amount of provided and creative blocks and sprites.

Sorry I caused offenses, the thread title could have been handled better. :)

Happy Hacking!

And to .Henix. : I bet you're cool at parties ;)</b>
