SMWCP2's Soundtrack: Organization! (02-22-14)

The drums at 1:23 sound off to me, but if you wanna keep them, then all power to you.

Anyways, I deleted the athletic theme I was making because I don't like it. Instead, I'll focus on the factory theme for a while. Should I expand it? And if so, then how much?

EDIT: also, I'm kinda worried about my factory theme because it uses samples. I don't wanna use SMW's default instruments to make up for the choir and sawtooth, because they would ruin it by a longshot. I hope S.N.N. decides to use samples and N-SPC patch.
I love the piano line, even though it does get a tad repetitive. I don't think that will be a problem though - it's not the "annoying" kind of repetitiveness that you get out of less-than-stellar songs. The drums, on the other hand .. eh. I don't think the offbeatness works in this case. Might be best to pick something a little more synced. That's just me though.

Other than that, good stuff! I love the atmosphere of it.

Actually, it's sawtooth, acoustic, and electric guitar all mixed together. :P As for the drums, maybe it's the congas? Or is it the hi-hat alternating that you think is offbeat? other than that, I don't see what you think is annoying in the percussion.
I was actually talking to Kipernal, not you. Sorry for the confusion.
Well crap, ignore all that down there then.

Like I said, I kind of figured there was something wrong with them.

Thank you for the feedback. By the drum section, do you mean the entire piece, or just from 1:23 onwards?
I should get a new layout.

Probably won't, though.
I just mean 1:23 onwards. The rest of it sounds nice.
Alright, I've got an SPC working now. The clicking you hear when the piano sample ends does not sound in-game in bsnes, only in SPC players and Zsnes.

Any final comments?

Liking this a lot. It almost sounds like it could fit one of the desert levels (ruins, especially - I'm really getting that vibe from it). If you want to drop me the TXT in a PM, I'll file it in my music folder for this hack.

I'd better start composing a couple of tracks for this myself.

Sure thing. Just give me a little bit of time to loop it and I'll send it over.

In my opinion the clicking doesn't even sound that bad, though. Adds some kind of nice beat to the song. Pretty good cave theme btw.
Feel free to visit my website/blog - it's updated rarely, but it looks pretty cool!
Dang, how are you doing these so fast? It usually takes me a good two weeks to compose or port anything (sometimes longer), even when I'm not bogged down by schoolwork.

I do, however, have a boss theme in mind. I haven't written enough of it down to have an SPC, though.

I'm working on a hack! Check it out here. Progress: 64/95 levels.

A MAD SCHEME speeds up musing creation a lot.

Hm. I didn't think of using it to compose music...I forgot pretty much everything about A MAD SCHEME, but does that mean you can get data from it in the form of an insertable .txt?

Also, we need to decide ASAP whether or not we're using AddmusicM, and if so, if we're going to fix it before using it. I need to know things like if I can put percussion on SFX channels, if I can use echo, if I can use any AddmusicM-specific N-SPC commands, etc.

Pretty much. I guess you only have to loop it yourself.

I still vote for "yeah" for the mere sake of compatibility and those few extra features, even though I don't create music myself.

I have three compositions and one port on me now, so we're off to a nice start.

I suppose you guys can start on the map tracks now too, if you wish (people already have, anyway). I'll be snagging the fire/ice one though since I have a rather nice plan for it, but the others are fair game.
OK. I've thought up something up for World 2 (Forest/Swamp), and I've got my sights set on World 9 (Abstract).
Question: what is the predominant theme on W4: Desert, ruins, beach, or reef?
I ask because I'm having trouble thinking up something with all four in mind.
Check out my music!
Actually, we can split that one up. Have a water/beach theme, and then a desert/ruins theme. There are enough OW music slots to make this work.

THANK YOU!

I've gotten AddmusicM to work near flawlessly now. The only glitches left (besides the sound effect channel percussion thing) are very minor. Note that I have not tested these extensively, I just figured I'd give a progress report.

-A slight modification must be made to the death routine. Essentially, the game must now wait at least one frame before playing the death music. This is because the SPC transfer takes a long time, and instead of doing it the second before Mario shows his death pose, it would be better to do it after, since the game looks frozen then anyway.

-Similarly to the above, since force blank is enabled during the SPC transfer routine, a thin black line may appear on the screen upon death/getting the goal/other sudden changes in music. There's not much I can do about this.

-The music doesn't start until the level actually begins to fade in, as opposed to a moment before. This I might be able to fix.

-At the beginning of some songs with echo enabled, if echo was not enabled in the previous area, there may be a very short garbage sound (not static-ey or anything, it's just some random instrument that instantly fades.) We might be able to fix this by ensuring that all voices are off when a song starts, but I don't know enough about the SPC to pull that off.

-Probably something else that I'm forgetting at the moment.

Also, I'd like to make a suggestion. Supposing that we can get custom sound effects working, can we move Mario's jump sound effect to channel #4 or #6? It's really obnoxious to have to avoid using a whole channel just because of one sound effect.
I should get a new layout.

Probably won't, though.
