Brandon's hack by Thatguy

Hack Name: Brandon's hack
Author: Thatguy
Description: This is my first ever attempt at hacking. I learned the hard way not to play around with the overworld unless you know what your doing. There is only 1 completed level currently. I am looking for criticism and if its too easy. Suggestions are appreciated
Welcome to SMW Central! As this is your first time here, you should know that we have rules and guidelines for content submitted to this site.

First off, nothing personal, but first hacks are almost always bad. That's why it isn't advised that you submit your first hack... maybe you should have posted it in the Hack Discussion board instead?

Secondly, one level is not long enough for a demo submission. You should try to finish the first world instead.

People aren't going to listen to suggestions. You'll have to disable the level from the overworld if you don't want people to play it.

The job of a hack moderator is to play any accessible stage and look for issues that violate the submission guidelines. If I can enter it, it's fair game.

It's fair game.

Grammatical hiccup there. Also, do not edit Level 104! It is re-used for the ending, so editing it can mess the ending up!

Completely stuck with no way to get out, and with no timer, I can't wait for time to run out so I can get back to the overworld. This is bad.

Glitchy BG.

Hideous palette. Cutoff on the right side.

More cutoff. Also, the slope does not behave in the way you wanted it to.

Then I go through a door to here, where I suddenly get a very short time limit, and am faced with a world made out of glass blocks.

Glitched bounce sprite. Glass blocks are incompatible with the current sprite set. Also, the level is pretty much just a ton of this...

...then this, where you can only fall in and die.

Also fair game.

It's a BG-less Vanilla Secret 1?

I took the secret exit. In doing so, the overworld glitched up. Baaad.

Immature.

It seems from here on in, the levels are unedited.

But this area suffers from extreme slowdown. Are you using the older BlockTool, and not the newer BlockTool Super Deluxe? Because the older one has a problem that makes SMW lag badly.

After beating Iggy, something... odd happened.

In the meantime, this is the level you wanted me to play, so... bottom's up!

Bad initial camera position.

Kinda hard to see what I'm doing.

Killed by a Urchin I could not see! Also, there's some cutoff where the blocks and pipes meet the water.

Glitchy graphic Block Boos. They are not compatible with this sprite set!

Sprite memory error. Dolphins are disappearing as soon as they appear!

More cutoff tiles, this time the railings.

More cutoff tiles, this time a chunk of diagonal pipe embedded into the ground?

If you land here, you can't get out without dying. Also, the player cannot see the lowest row of blocks in a level. Don't put floors there, as the player can't tell if it is a floor or a bottomless pit.

Tried to pull a dick move, eh?

Can't hit that message block. That's because Mario is hitting the cement block underneath it first. Also, I can't see the Dolphins, so I can't jump across them, so I died.

Which sends me here! You still have grammar issues to fix. Also, "super teleportation powers"? Really? If Mario had them, he would use them to go straight to Bowser every time. This is far-fetched and bullshit. And what's this about not taking a secret exit?

More cutoff. Also, that gap is too small for Mario to reliably jump into. It's a pain in the ass, and going in there means having to go back out of it to avoid a Beach Koopa. I'm getting a headache just from thinking about what I had to go through.

After a string of short tunnels with Splitting Chucks that do not split due to a sprite memory error, I've got three pits. Where do they lead?

Did I ever tell you how much I hate this level? ALso, after this is a maze of multi-directional note blocks, but I managed to glitch through them to the exit.

This is where that level leads to. There's some cutoff tiles here.

Blatant edit of Level 1. Also, this is not how you block off a player from entering a level!

This hack violates the following:
Quote
2a) Blatant level edits will not be accepted.
Use CTRL+DEL to remove old SMW levels. (104, C5, C7, and 3 are exempt from this.)

3) No graphical glitches!
Errors such as garbled sprites/FGs/BGs, message box text screwing up layer 3 items, floating/stacked/cutoff tiles, and general graphical ugliness are frowned upon. Also, don't forget about glitches such as sprite memory issues - the graphics of the sprite will 'disappear', but the sprite will still be there, and can unfairly hurt Mario.

4) Your hack should be of a reasonable length!
Unless you intend to make your hack contain very long and very high quality levels, demos which are too short to provide any feedback on or be enjoyable will be subject to removal. A general rule of thumb is that the hack should feature at least one complete world with about five levels, or should feature around at least 15 minutes of game time.

7a) Keep it fair, and keep the hack at a legitimate difficulty!
i.e. Avoid things like death after the goal, blind jumps, forced damage, excessive enemies, places where you can get permanently stuck, excessive 3-UP moons, glitch abuse, projectile sprites (like Bullet Bill) placed directly into a level instead of using the correct shooter/generator sprite, etc.

8b) Have fellow users beta test your hack before submitting it!
Your hack should be as good as you can make it before you submit it to be featured in the hack database. A good way to make sure you have a quality hack is have it beta tested. Have your friends play it and give you feedback, or recruit some beta testers here. The site's hack moderators are not beta testers; we are demo testers.

9) Quality level design
Your hack has a much higher chance of being accepted if the level design is fun. Conversely, if the level design is found to be lacking then a little cutoffness may be enough to push the hack into deletion.
Please read the Hack Submission Guidelines.
