Don't Ask Don't Tell repeal passes both houses

Link

"The Senate voted 65-31 on Saturday to end Don't Ask, Don't Tell, defeating a 17-year policy of banning gay and lesbian service members from serving openly in the military."

Basically, the United States used to completely ban gay members from serving in the military. President Clinton tried to fight it, and the best he got was Don't Ask Don't Tell - a policy where gay members could serve, but as soon as the military found out about their sexual orientation, they were kicked out. So basically, brave men and women serving their country, earning purple hearts, loving their job completely lost it and were booted out just because of their sexual orientation.

There was also a recent study showing that openly gay men and women serving would not be a detriment to the stability of the military. Remember that we already have both men and women serving together: they have strict rules and standards for that sort of thing. The same would hold true for openly gay men and women.

The repeal passing means that openly gay soldiers will be able to serve and those who were kicked out can be reinstated. This is a landmark piece of legislation for the US, though several countries already have similar policies. Shows how behind we are. :P
About time. A hero is a hero, gay or straight, and anyone who bravely and selflessly defends our country should be treated likewise.
With a black president and allowing all sexual orientations to serve in the military, it looks like the USA is finally progressing socially.

Let's hope that it can continue.
Lol finally...

I was waiting that. I'm not gay nor american, but as proud atheist, i support gay rights.

That makes you sound really ignorant...

Anyways, never really understood that law to begin with, nice to see it's gone.
I wholeheartedly approve of this. I don't care about your ethnicity, color, philosophical world view, or sexual preference, if you want to serve in the military, nobody should be able to tell you that you can't.

I'd like to point out that atheism has no stance on gay rights at all, but eh...
Eh... i've always seen homophobia as something religious, because it's common here, and here everyone is a Catholic conservative. Sorry if i offended any Christian.

e: i meant Secular Humanist, basically "Atheist who tolerates and respects"

Thank goodness. They should stop categorising people instantly, it seems unfair that the blacks got their way around the 60's, why did gays have to wait another 50 years? Nonetheless, it's great the it finally happened, even though it took forever.
One issue, though, is that like the blacks, gays will continue to be segregated, just because they're gay. We'll have to wait a long time for gays to truly become accepted.
Good. Equal Rights. It's nice to see gays and lesbians get equal rights.

Um... what? No they don't.
They still can't get married in any state except Massachusetts. Not to mention all of the discrimination gays get for being gay.

But regarding the article, I think it's nice. Who cares if someone is gay or straight? That's their own business. If they want to serve in the military, they should be allowed to. And I'm glad they finally are. One step closer to world peace.

discrimination is not the same as equal rights. I can hate on who ever I want. what was it? plesie v. ferguson? idk how to spell their names, but I think it would have been okay to be segregated if everything was equal. Although that was surely not the case.

moltensnow, I think more states have allowed it, but your point still stands.

You mean the case that got overturned nearly 60 years later by the famous Brown v. Board of Education case that declared the "separate but equal" policy was unconstitutional?

yea. it was overturned because people were seperate but not equal. the example i remember was that blacks had to use their own buses but there were only 2 or 3 for the city/town where whites had 20-30 buses.

While I'll shall never see the military as heroes, it's nice to see gay people being allowed to do what's right in their hearts and fight for the country.
I don't know, I mean the don't ask don't tell was good because there are some who feel uncomfortable around homosexuals, to the point were it can affect SOME people, the thought of don't ask don't tell is good because it eliminates the assholes of each sides, like the one idiot that harasses someone until they kill them selves or go awol, or that one person who is overly flamboyant to the point were they force their beliefs onto others, because if you don't think they're completely right, this must mean you homophobic. But the thing that I have a problem with is that, with don't ask don't tell, if you said you were gay, you would get dishonorably discharged, which is absolutly uncalled for and very foolish of our government to let happen, because gay or straight they still put their lives on the line for our freedom, therefore homosexuals should be treated equally, so I beleive that the entire "don't ask don't tell" should be rid of, I just think it shold be revised.
Yay I finally got a layout! I feel like I am officially a member now, so this being the case, I don't know to much about chocolate hacks, but feel free to let me beta test any vanilla hacks.
