Super Wario World - Demo II Release

Super Wario World - Demo II
(Preferably played in bsnes, but should work on any emulator.)

If you've somehow recently played the first demo of this that was floating around in 2007, there's not much new content in this release... so don't get too concerned. It's just a very highly polished re-release, which was sorely needed.

However, if you haven't, everything in this hack will be new to you. Either way, enjoy the demo... and please post your comments and suggestions (within reason, I'm not a coding genius) in this thread!

Also, please read the Release Info in its entirety.

And now, some screenshots!

And finally, here's a link to the IPS patch.

Enjoy, and please remember to leave feedback!

Judging by the screenshots this looks really cool. They perfectly catch the atmosphere from Wario Land (well except for those regular SMW enemies inbetween #w{=P} ). I'll give it a try.
Feel free to visit my website/blog - it's updated rarely, but it looks pretty cool!
Looks like a good hack, very unique and different from other hacks. Practically everything in the original SMW has been edited in some way or another.Free counters!
Add more treasures and it will fit perfectly for this C3.
You have some well-chosen graphics, they fit your levels nicely. I especially liked the eyed question blocks, they made me laugh.
Now I need to change my old avatar. Or not.
I haven't seen any cutoff, bad palettes and such so it's a good hack at all.
First time I've seen wario as a character in a hack. Of course, this may be because I've been gone for a long while.
This is quite a unique concept. The screenshots so far look quite decent.
Hey, I didn't know you were making a Wario hack! Something that may interest you is my Wario Dash patch which I will be releasing sometime here at C3. It'll add the perfect touch to any Wario hack. I'll be sure to play this hack, as well!
It's okay, but you need some different backgrounds for each level, the HDMA effect got rather repetitive quickly.

The style for the foregrounds was great though. The castle level type graphics fitted the level well too.

Level design was generally good, although maybe a bit too linear (for a Wario game, you need at least some alternate areas to explore and treasures to find), and some slowdown inflicted a few of the levels.

Overworld was okay.

Now, the only real negative... you need to realise, Wario games are nothing like Mario games. They're not running from left to right in a relatively linear level, they don't involve Mario enemies, bosses or music, and they don't have similar styles. Add the recommended patches like ground pound and the Wario dash, change the graphics for the enemies to be more Wario like (although not the Wario grunts in the ExGFX section), add in some nice Wario Land music (Wario Land 1 preferrable for this hack, considering the graphics style) and add a different boss, preferrably with nothing to do with Bowser or the Mushroom Kingdom. Then your hack will be brilliant, people will love it even more, and I'd vote for it to be featured.

As for Mario's Nightmare Quest? Well, it's currently on Fusion Gameworks, ROM Hacking.net or the GCN at the moment.
Sexy! Love how this looks; I'm going to go play it [in a bit]!

this hack's readme
  • EXTREMELY minor, but the stage intro message still says "MARIO START". I'm not aware how to change it without causing stupid little mistakes like "TIWE UP" and "GAWE OVER".

That would actually make the hack extremely funny! And, it would fit in with Nintendo's habit of "Warioizing" everything (other Wario games have things like the Awazon River Basin and the Subwarine), so you should totally do that!

I'm going to agree with A-l-e-x here, it would be fun.

But if you don't want to do that, I belive there is one topic that explain how to change the Mario Start without messing the Time Up on the forum.
Bloodstar hacks what

Well, I'm definitely going to have to try this out, because not only did I not know that you even hacked SMW, Bloodstar, but the screenshots actually look really good.

I had a feeling this would come up. Unfortunately, as far as I'm aware, the GB Wario Land games didn't really have any backgrounds to speak of... so I had to add in the gradient to prevent a pure blank color. I'm very open to suggestions about backgrounds to use, however, as I certainly feel the same way!

I actually had WL music at one point, but I removed it thanks to crashing issues on the actual hardware. I'll see if I can work around it a bit to the point where these issues are eliminated. I'm pretty sure I have an idea of how to, and I'll give it a shot.

I kinda remember that, actually. I don't think they'd quite work as well in these cases, though, considering they're not items or places.

In general, many thanks for all the input so far, and I'll do my best to put some of these suggestions into motion!

What version of AddMusic are you using? I'm pretty sure no music from Wario Land 1 uses the NSPC patch, so it's unlikely any version will cause issues on a real console. I may be wrong about this.

And erm... yes, the Wario Land games did have backgrounds, for the first game, it's the beach water/clouds in the first world and what not, and various other backgrounds later. I distinctly recall Parsely Woods and Syrup Castle having quite nice background graphics personally.

Note the light grey? I think that's the background.

Wario Land II also had them...

Note the trees in the outside area.

As did Wario Land 3. Of course, the backgrounds are usually rather simple.

My advice would be maybe to mix the backgrounds up a bit. Put some of the Rice Beach and maybe Mt Teapot background graphics in one background for example (one ExGFX file) and do that a few times for each world.

I was using Romi's addmusic. As far as I'm aware, initializing the echo at all will cause things to gradually deteriorate to the point of a crash. (I ran into this issue earlier on in my testing, and just reverted to SMW music at that point.) I've tried AddMusicM, but I can't tell what's going on... and to my memory, there are some pretty bad lingering issues in that as well.

I'll be damned, I was wrong. Guess that's what happens when I haven't played the game in a while! Like you said, pretty simple stuff, so I'll have to toy around a bit and see if I can get them to work well with SMW's much increased screen size. WL2's graphics are tempting to grab as well, though I'd likely just use my own palettes for them.

Again, many thanks for the input, it's appreciated!

I think I remember this hack from way back(or was it some other wario-esque hack? =/)

Ether way, you've got some good stuff going on here =3
