Writing in another Language

I don't really understand what you are trying to tell me.

Yeah, so what if I haven't shoveled out my signature yet, I'll get to it later.

Broozer, your English is fine and was well suited to writing removal logs. I was surprised when I learned your age. . .most native speakers I know could not write English nearly as well as you at your age.

Thank you, Camerin! I feel special now - I honestly didn't know my English was that good. ^^

He didn't say 99% of people in this site speaks english and their only language, he said that 99% of the people from this site who don't speak any other langueges than english don't write perfectly.
All you guys saying you don't speak English well need to be less self-defeating. Seriously.

I never even knew English wasn't your first language.

Another language I know is english, which I sometimes have problems writing in (as you can see, my grammar isn't always that great).

No actually, I can't see.

When it comes to English, I'm decent enough at it, in my opinion. At least I can say that no one seems to have trouble understanding me which is a good sign.

Again, I wouldn't have known that English wasn't your first language if it weren't for this post and your "from:" tag.

In Spanish, my native language, perfect.
In English, pretty good.

Ha ha...you're joking, right? I can't remember the last mistake I've seen you make.

As for English, however, I would say it is far from being perfect. Though I consider myself a decent writer in this language, I sometimes get the feeling my English can sound rather... formal at times. Though this is not much of a big deal, I kind of wish my writing here in the forums sounded more informal.

Best way to stop yourself from sounding formal is to use more contractions. Say it's instead of it is, for example. But to be honest, I've never really noticed at all.

Your English is actually pretty good. Your grammar is often great, it's just that you tend to sound just a bit...unnatural. (Also, it's understood for the record.)

If I didn't quote you, it's probably because you didn't say your English was bad. :P
I should get a new layout.

Probably won't, though.
I write too fast. That's why. Maybe my english isn't that good after all.

Sorry, joining the depressed group.
i just lurk sometimes

Wait...what? I said I can't remember the last mistake you've made. Your English is, overall, fantastic.
I should get a new layout.

Probably won't, though.

Fluent in the language, can write in it too. The third line of characters are the ones I use. First is old Assyrian, 2nd and 4th can be considered cursive.

Also it's read right to left.

For languages using English letters, the only one I can write in is Italian, which isn't as good as my Assyrian.
Because I know French, I found Italian and Spanish to be very easy to learn. I can read Spanish quite well, though I can't speak it.

Is Assyrian written right-to-left? I know Hebrew and Arabic are, but are the other Semitic languages? Either way, I could never learn to write any language like that, though I could probably learn to speak it.

I would really like to learn to speak Russian, Manderin, Arabic, and Portugese.

Yes, written and red RTL. It's a very complicated language to learn since we use dots to represent different sounding letters (two dots going up on a letter make something like "b" become "baa", two dots going down under a letter make "b" become "beh") and silent letters to change the meaning of words. Speaking it might not be so hard, though.

But not English?! What, have you been typing up all your posts in Assyrian and having your little brother translate them or something?

Well, I'm not fluent in anything other than English, although I do know a little Spanish and German and a very little bit of Arabic and Latin. (I swear after this semester, I'll never be able to look at half the words in the English language without automatically conjugating one or more of the Latin nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc. that they are derived from...) I'd like to learn more of any and every language I can, though. I'd like to get better at the languages I know, learn Esperanto and maybe Japanese, maybe some other languages like Russian and Italian...I don't know.

----------------

I'm working on a hack! Check it out here. Progress: 64/95 levels.
I used to be fluent in Indonesian when my school offered it, but when they cancelled it as a subject and I never had opportunities to practice, I gradually lost it. Now I have trouble counting to five.
English: 1st language so..

Spanish: Barely passed a spanish class in 7th grade even though every single person related to me speaks it. I understand a lot of it but have trouble speaking. Never really tried reading or writing.

French: I was in some honor french class fresh-soph year. I have forgotten a lot since then but my girlfriend is helping me remember more. Can read, write and speak but my vocabulary is limited. Grammar gets me sometimes.

Japanese: Can read/write pretty well. Grammar is 'excellent' apparently. Mostly just learning kanji. I absolutely can't speak it properly and have a very difficult time understanding native speakers.

FUN FACT~
Korean is weird as a talking dog. Most people assume it's this..
spanish -> italian = japanese -> korean
it's more like..
spanish -> japanese = japanese -> korean

I learnt Indonesian from prep-4. Satu, due, tiga, empat, lima, enam, tuju, delapan, sembilan, sepulu.

I can also remember that pig is "baba". That's it though. :V
I can't write in Spanish for shit. I can speak it good and stuff since I was raised that way but in school I was never shown any. I'm a little embarrassed to ever try and type because I don't know how to spell things in Spanish. or some grammar for that matter.

Example of me typing without looking anything up:

de verdad no se como rayar o escribir en el idioma espanol. yo a necesitado de cancelar una classe de espanol para los que lo hablan nativamente porque el primer tarea fue de rayar un papael hablando de mi vida. no pude hacer lo, y cambie por otra clase. :(

Hope anyone who knows Spanish didn't lose any brain cells reading that.
My first language is English, and my second is French.

I can write better in English, actually, but I consider myself not bad at French.

A bit of Spanish, too, but it's waaay lower than English and French.
Now I need to change my old avatar. Or not.
1st English - Knowledge = 100%
2nd French - Knowledge = 65%
3rd Spanish - Knowledge = 23%

Other: Fail
First language: Dutch. I'm as fluent in this language as I can be. It makes no sense having to use those complicated, unnecessary words.

Second language: English. I'm quite fluent here too, but sometimes I lack a bit of vocabulary, so I describe it with other words.

Third language: German. Compared to most other non-native German speakers, I think I'm good in forming sentences, but I'm not nearly good enough to call me 'fluent' in this language yet.

Fourth language: French. I can form most basic phrases, ask for the road, information about someone, what can be bought in a store, etc., but it doesn't go much beyond that. Definitely not fluent.

Fifth language (if you could call it that, anymore): Russian. I aspire to become better at this. Currently I just know the most basic phrases and words. The cyrillic alphabet is actually easy, too. Also for a basic thing: Я говорю по-русский.

All other languages... bleh. I've been taught Spanish in grades 7 and 8, but...
--------> Don't follow "Find Roy's Dignity", my hack. Because it's pretty outdated. <--------
In large, monolinguistic countries like Canada and the U.S., most people don't feel the need to learn a second language. Usually, thy never need one.

Living where I do, there are far more francophones than anglophones, even though my city is technically in Ontario. As such, French is needed, especially in the workforce.

La chose que je trouve le plus difficile en écrivant en français est probablement le gendre des nons. Aussi, il y a les différences entre le français Parisien--dont je sais le plus--et le français Québecois.

Ça. I don't really know the differences between Parisian and Quebecois French, though. And English, of course, I know very well.

Also, understood** @ original post.
