Super Mario World For Dummies

Standard

I have found a bug,

if you beat Jumping Blocks, you can't enter Yellow Switch Lair.

netcvb for Admin 2011
Yeah, there is still a few problems, like glitched graphics, ow events, and flat areas, we will get that fixed in the final version of Super Mario World for Dummies.
Double posting, but meh.

I've realized this was outdated.

I like the Idea of this hack.
The Switch palace is quite good but I have 1 nitpick:
Why are you using the here we go theme rather than the switch palace theme?

I'll be away from the 24th of July for a about a week.

We aren't really worrying about music yet, we will add some custom music, more palettes, custom sprites and stuff at the end.
The 'Jumping Blocks' level could do with more decoration, like bushes.
Hey guys, this thing looks really nice!
Very intriguing level design. I also like some of the graphical edits you've made, such as squaring of blocks - I personally like that better than the standard "rounded" blocks, since it prevents a lot of situations where there would be cutoff, such as using them behind a pipe. Good stuff.

I have a couple of suggestions/constructive criticisms.

If your aim is to truly make this "for dummies", i.e. total n00bs at SMW, you may want to consider reducing the difficulty in a few spots.
I know it seems super easy for you, since you're no doubt all experienced SMW players - but think about how a little kid who's never played the game (and is maybe not that great at games in the first place) would approach it.

The Jumping Blocks level is where I noticed it the most. You could think about removing a few enemies, narrowing a few gaps, and lowering a few ledges. Nothing major, but you could save the more tricky maneuvers for later in the hack.

Anyone who thinks that would make the early levels boring is missing the point of the hack. You're holding the player's hand, guiding them step-by-step how to play this game.

Make the difficulty curve go from extremely easy in the first few levels to moderately difficult (but not extremely difficult) by the end.

Just a suggestion. Feel free to smirk, yell profanities, and throw things.

Also, in the Yellow Switch Lair : Coin Spamalamadingdong! It's not really that much of a problem though. A very inexperienced player might have a lot of fun collecting all those coins. :D

In conclusion, I think this is a fantastic idea, and a great start. I want to see it succeed! Great work you guys.

My life has not involved SMW hacking for the past several months...I still love you guys though!

Thanks for the comments! Yeah, we will try to make it easier, and also, I figured it was too much coins. We may remove some.
Hi, I downloaded the beta, had the same yellow switch problem, I think its cause the levels are all open ? I hope its not like that in the final anyways that would be far too easy and your noob 8 year old sister or whatever will just go hah completed look im at the end...anyway i'm trying again starting with the switch level.

I have alot of problems with this considering what your aiming for, first being that your not told B is jump as the first message, and I realise how inane that is but hey I don't make the rules, you wanna teach noobs, tell them what button jump is.

there was also slowdown at the blue turtles, which there are far too many of, and other than fireball your not told you can jump on them to kill them, or to spin jump on spikey things and not normal jump because you'll die.

to sum it up, there are far too many places to die and not enough tutorial for what this is supposed to be. I also recommend tails_1ss' 101 hack for all your level design needs if you've not played that one, you broke some of the what not to do rules already.

also how to throw things/enemys, spin jump, yoshi, idk how advanced you wanna get to move wise I just think you missed some of the required basics, also the massively underused camera scroll with L and R, item storage....that the football players take alot of hits to beat, i really don't know man, so much you could do, so much you could leave out...would be nice if there was a "yoshi's house" with the controls or something...

idk maybe i'm thinking too much...but then again you don't teach someone drums by starting with maiden, you start by telling them "this, is a stick" :)

ed2: -------- scratch that, its in level 2 -_-

ed3: finally done the 4th level, it lags at the horizontal/verticle bridges, too many sprites again, and the red turtles kill you when you jump on them. (ed4: and when you spin jump...) far too much too kill you. also if your little mario you can't make the spinning blocks turn with spin jump but since theres no blue red green blocks you can skip them. and whats with the muncher/fish/red turtle assault at the end, far far too much...I have said my peice for now, I'll wait for the next beta.
We fixed most of the problems pointed out already. That was just a public beta, from a week ago.
Hey guys, here's a little update on what is going on...

- Finished all of world 1's basic level designs, HyperShadow32 is going to fix them for difficulty and make them pretty.
-Finished all of world 2's basic level designs, same as above.
-Finished World 1's boss level. Haven't decided on how we are going to make the boss.
-Overworld design is going to be done by Fireblast124. The current is, obviously, a placeholder.
-Worlds are going to have themes.
World 1 has a basic theme.
World 2 has a Yoshi theme.
World 3 has a Climbing Net/Duck Sliding theme.
World 4 has a more advanced basic theme.
World 5 has a more skilled theme. This will recap everything you learned.
World S - this world will have levels that introduce blocks and sprites and things that are custom, to teach them how to play other hacks. We might even go over Kaizo a little bit. But I wouldn't hold my breath over that. Everything is still a work in progress.

The current overworld layout calls for 4 levels a world, with one boss level. We could add more to the game in the future. But we will cross that bridge when we come to it.

Progress is almost at a standstill, but the project WILL NOT DIE.

A bump, for this project is still going. The progress can be a bit slow but it will be finished certainly.

I might put some sort of signature here once. I guess.
Well, this hack is doing really well. During my testing, I didn't really find any major errors. I hope this hack continues to keep its quality. Thanks for reading.

Posting to say that I made a level for this. #w{:>}

Also, it's doing good, albeit a bit slow.

Latest patch.
Stuff is broken and stuff, etc etc, but we haven't worked on it in a while and I thought I might as well keep you guys up to snuff, so you get to try my latest private build for yourself. Keep in mind the preceding statement, because of the fact that there are many things broken and some stuff doesn't work correctly.
Also, if anyone knows how to fix the freezing in test level, let me know.. I don't really feel like trying to mess with it using trial and error right now.

Please don't post anything like "its broken so it sucks" because of what I've said twice already.

Thank you, and please continue to follow us on the development of this hack.

Yeah we've undergone some major changes and the hack is no longer called Super Mario World for Dummies.
Our IRC chan is still #dummies for laziness reasons, but...

If a mod could close and/or trash this thread, I would be appreciated.

We'll update our status with a new thread, since it's basically a fresh start.
